Whilst this is very serious I am amazed that a speeding driver gets this but burglars and Gary Glitter people get a lot less.

Looks like Scotland's got it's act together on Law and Order - unless some of our Scottish owners can confirm that pondlife up there is treated with the same leniency as it is down here.......

From the BBC website:-

Car dealer's speeding 'record'

McAllister was jailed for five months
A car dealer caught driving at what is believed to be the highest speed ever recorded by Scottish police has been jailed for five months.

Jason McAllister was caught by police travelling at 156.7 mph in a BMW M3 on the A90 between Aberdeen and Dundee in March.

Sentencing him, Forfar Sheriff Kevin Veal described his speed as "absolutely outrageous".

McAllister, of Manor Avenue, Aberdeen, had admitted dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

As well as the prison sentence, he was disqualified for four years and ordered to resit an extended test.

I understand it's the highest speed recorded by a speed detection unit by the Scottish police

Chris Macintosh, procurator fiscal
Procurator fiscal Chris Macintosh said a police patrol was told to be on the lookout for McAllister's vehicle.

Mr Macintosh said: "It was a BMW vehicle, it's a very powerful model.

"The vehicle was seen travelling at a very high speed."

Police clocked the vehicle several times and found he was doing 120.6mph in a 40mph zone and 156.7mph on the dual carriageway, which has a speed limit of 70mph.

Mr Macintosh said: "I understand it's the highest speed recorded by a speed detection unit by the Scottish police."

When stopped by police as he neared Dundee, McAllister said: "This is all that I need - I have just fallen out with the girlfriend."

Defence lawyer Lynne Bentley said: "He accepts there must be a custodial sentence.

Inspector Nick Hull: "It's crazy"
"It's his own car. Extremely stupidly he made the decision to drive."

Sheriff Veal told McAllister: "Anybody driving at this speed must realise that it's dangerous and inevitably a custodial option will be top of the priorities."

The sheriff said the fact that the accused had already been banned from driving reinforced his view.

Sheriff Veal said: "This level of speed is absolutely outrageous and poses a risk to every other road user."

Reacting to the case, Roger Vincent, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: "It was absolutely crazy for someone to try and drive at that speed on a public road.

"Anyone who has lost a relative in a crash caused by excessive speed would be horrified by the cavalier attitude of this driver."

Tayside Police Inspector Nick Hull said officers were astonished at the speed of McAllister's 3.2 litre vehicle.

He said: "We're not talking about someone who has allowed himself to slip just over the speed limit, we're talking about someone who had deliberately driven at 156 mph on a public road.

"The stopping distances at that sort of speed are around about a quarter of a mile, it's crazy."

He did, but he was already banned from driving when he was caught.

They should throw away the key as he gives a bad name to the innocent law abiding speeders the rest of us are.

He should have used that in his mitigation......

How couldhe have been doing 156.7 when it is limited to 155.

156.7mph should have got him a ban only...

The driving while disqualified bit did him for - his own fault nobody elses...

Fortunately I've only managed to get 200 to do 142mph indicated - so we're all safe....

Where the hell did they get the .7 from?????

Some new fantastically accurate measuring system then??

Although I would not condone such action I think that considering the fact that courts no longer lock up criminals, then this is obviously the best way to do it. Lock up all the law abiding people for relatively minor things and leave all the Murders, etc on the streets to do as they please:mad:

So they are now locking people up on the pretext of what MIGHT have happened.

Its all well and good going on about how many people 'could' have died had he had an accident but he didn't WTF is going on in this crappy country of ours:mad:

Why not lock people up who carry knives as they 'might' murder someone:rolleyes:

About 140 in a 40 zone.

I couldn't condemn him for that without knowing the road.

Have people noticed lots of roads that used to be derestricted are getting limited to 40 nowadays?

As you'll probably know Ripper, most of the roads from Brislington to Stroud/Bath/Chippenham etc are now limited to 40.
Some, admittadly are in semi residential areas but lots have:

No houses.
No pavements.
No Schools.
And better road surfaces than many other country roads set at 60.

Plus, Temple Way bypass 30? That's a feckin joke.

What I'm trying to say in an albeit longwinded way, is that not only are speeders easy targets for what is a victimless crime.
But in addition to enforcing the speed limits on roads more vigourously; we are being hit with a double whammy of speed limits coming down, even in areas where this makes no sense.

:)

You are spot on, Steve.

I don't know if you saw the mail that's going around about all of the NEW speed target sites!?

Nice easy pickings :tosser:s

Be careful out there  (unless you're a PROPER criminal)

No!

I have noticed that they are up on the Filton Ringroad just off J3 @ M32 these days.

And just when I was behind a Chimaera at the traffic lights too! Typical.

Ur kidding of course:confused:
U should lock up people who carry knives.
And u could use ur arguement with drunk drivers, ie. they didnt kill anyone.
Drunk drivers are the scum of this earth!

Im not saying i dont speed, but cmon 120 in a 40 limit, i agree that alot of ur 60 and 70 roads are now being turned to 40's or 30's, but unles ur on a decent surface and clear wide road 120 is madness imo.

Drink Driving is NOT the same at all...

If I am speeding then I am still in control of the vehicle if I was drunk then I wouldn't be, and your totally right Drink Drivers are the scum of the earth.

120 in a 40 is bloody stupid but its not the point I was trying to make.

Yes I was kidding, I don't condone any of it, what I was trying to illustrate was the comparative sentencing for offences;)

Interesting point, that!

What is the sentence for taking your 747 with 300+ helpless passengers at 200mph through some of the most densely populated areas of the country?

I mean, just think what COULD happen....

Yes - Scotland's judges are Sheriffs.

And they have procurator fiscals, too.

And Haggis......
