Hi All,
Found out some links for phone / PDA based GPS lap timers, and thought they might be of use for the trackday / racey type people on here, so thought I'd share :sxoc:
Most will map out the track automatically, let you specify a start line and then will give you fairly accurate lap times as you go round the track, and then let you play back the data or export it. Some also use accelerometers if the phone has them to show peak G readouts. Accuracy is dependant on the update rate of the GPS in the phone - but all should be fairly accurate given a good GPS signal. Most internal GPS units only update position once a second, but the better external ones will update 5-10 times a second.
iPhone:
Harry's GPS Laptimer: http://www.gps-laptimer.de/
(£2.99) Plots circuits, tells you peak speeds, corner speeds, G, etc etc. Should also let you export the data, but I couldn't get it to work...
Lap Timer Real Time:
http://www.firstclass.com/~ron/Lap_Timer/Features.html
(£6.99) Also has a desktop app to allow data analysis (Mac only)
Palm:
http://www.gps-laptimer.de/
Symbian:
RaceChrono:
http://www.racechrono.com/
Donationware, 10€+
Supports internal / external GPS, so you can get nearly the same resolution as the pro boxes with a cheap bluetooth GPS. You can also export the data in standard format for analysis - I believe it's in the same format as the racelogic box, so you can analyse it on your PC in a 'professional' app.
Windows Mobile:
RaceChrono:
http://www.racechrono.com/
Donationware, 10€+
Android:
Trackmaster:

Please bear in mind some trackdays take a very dim view of using timing equipment as it invalidates their insurance!
