View Full Version : Civic Type R?
My girlfriend is looking to change her MX5 for one, as far as I know they are a cracking car according to the right ups.
What are your views?
Bloke has one at work. Fast, but unreliable. FWD so it scrabbles and the handling is twitchy to say the least. I would say the MX5 is in every way a better car unless you've got loads to carry.
Also Honda servicing prices make you
I think they're cool. Very quick on the twisties and not bad at all in a straight line - never driven one but killed a couple ;) :)

Really? A mate has an S2000 and I thought the servicing cost were very reasonable - can't remember exactly what they were now though...
Dad pays the same for major service on his 1.4 Civic as I did for the 200. £190.
A women in work loves hers, my girlfriend loves cars but it's too fussy about drivin it at stupid speed, she just wants somethin she can beat things at the lights and has more space than her MX5 and she likes the look of the Type R, also she wants to say Jap

I took one out after the motorshow and was well impressed with it. Felt steady at 100+ on the bypass and nimble through the twisties. 6 speed box was nice but dash mount gear stick looked ugly:(
If I needed a more "practical" car then I would definately consider one.
Interesting fact: the salesman said at that dealership the type-R outsold all the other Civics put together:eek: could just have been saying that though:rolleyes:

thats not really a fair comment as the type r is a very reliable car,
one or two may have its nibbles but the cars engines are quite unbreakable, i have driven my cousins civic and for a FWD its really grippy and precise, the dash mounted gearstick is a joy to use too, looks silly but good to use, great cracking cars they are and a good choice for female drivers,
My next car is defo gonna be a CTR although then again the new Integra TypeR???? Paul, have a hop on over to www.civictype-r.co.uk. Loads of good info over there

What??!?!?! Are you mad???!?!?!
CTR is an awesome car, miles better than an MX5.
If you are thinking of going the CTR route and you find that it's not raw enough for you then try the Integra. You can pick up a minter for less than 10k and they are excellent cars, and you can carry loads as well:D
We have had a CTR for about a year, done 20k in it with no probs at all and it gets driven very hard when I use it!
I can second the thoughts on the gear stick - looks odd, but is really good, probably the best change I have ever used in fact.
The only real criticism I have of the CTR is lack of LSD which can effect the handling when you chuck it about. You can have one fitted though if you get serious.
Also try http://forum.hondarevolutions.com/ for some more Type - R info.

No, not mad just my opinion based on having driven both and knowing people who own them.
Have you ever driven the Honda?
Oh and by the way, scrabble
What you have to remember is my girlfriend wants somethin that looks nice and is pretty nippy, she isn't bothered about driftin or anythin so she is ok with FWD.

I'd choose the focus over ANY other FWD car, thats probably not very helpful info for this thread though!
Yeah but the Focus is 20k and the Civic is 15k, plus my GF hates the Focus.

Each to their own and all that.
I have owned an Integra for 2 years and a CTR for 1 year and think both are great and not had any issues with servicing cost or anything like that.
I must admit that the VTEC thing is very subjective, people either love it or hate it and it does take a while to get used to it.

Fair enough :)
I have found the Integra in particular to be a great car, I have not driven my 200 as quick as I could get the Integra. The VTEC is a real blast and you find you can't help yourself from VTECing everywhere! They have softened the cut on the iVTEC(fitted to the CTR), but it's still a buzz to drive.
Best thing in the 'Teg was passengers reactions to the VTEC hit. It's normally either 'fook me, does that damage it' or absolute silence.
Sadly it had to go as I feared for my licence! The spoiler on the back would obscure the lights on top of a police car and make it look like a normal car - not a good thing!
Damn, you got me remanicsing now...

There are rumours circulating at the moment about Honda bringing this into the UK, dunno if they are true but Honda do have some strange policies on what they sell here.

Mate at work has one
Very fast, a bit twitchy, and very revvy (obviously) but he likes it...
paint chips on the bonnet for some reason, seen this on many models, and there is a major 'toe in' (if thats the right word) so theres uneven tyre wear on the back...
but as a car, everything is under warrenty so if it fecks up hes covered. He also gets that body repair warranty too (and the bodyshop come out and respray/touch up any problems)
Overall i think its a nice car, his is silver, Id have the black one, and hes not touching the engine, but i would if it was me!
Haven't had much scrabble as its a nice solid ride with big wheels, but it must occur...
Top car

My other half has a Ford Puma, quite nice to drive for a Ford, she is now 5.5 months pregnant so the Puma will have to go(no boot space. We have tried 3 cars, Audi A3 (yuk), heavy steering, not a lot of feel, slugish performance, Civic Type R - very quick for girls car, gearing is wicked, grip is scrabbly build quality is very good and looks nice . . . then drove Ford Focus St170 - sorry since when did Ford make great cars, sure the Puma is 1.7, nice and nippy but the Focus is brilliant (can't believe I said that), steering great - loads of feedback on turn in, power is good, nice and even and pulls well, 6 speed box, switchable traction control and very good breaks, the inside is a bit cheap but still nice. The sales person got my gf to drive it through the back roads and talked here through powering out of corners - she loved it, so did I and now we're both happy, gets delivered next week - she dosent know yet so hope she don't read this.!!!!
Kp
I just don't like Fords, sorry guys no offence :(

PS Sorry to screw up the frames im running 1600x1200 res at home and i ve just got to work and im well........... sorry..llol
Adam
Personally, I hate them.
Drove one fairly testingly when I was at the agency... No torque to speak of (seemingly) twitching, up on its toes all the time. Horrible little thing.
But it does have a V-TEC
Personally would never go for one, just my 2p

DC5 - in the uk without importing - not a chance!!
Rumours have been flying around for over ayear and it wont happen, they fear the if they bring it over sales of CTR's will drop!
Two diffrent cars tho so i think honda uk are talking tosh!
As for buying a new ctr, nice fast cars, cant say a heck of alot as i havnt driven one, but VTEC in 6th at 130+ is diffrent ;)
Unreliable???? are you insane i havnt heard of any CTR's having reliability problems at all! Ok so the very early ones had rattles and the paint was naff but they have improved the quality alot with the new ones!
As for servicing costs, well its expencive for all makes these days but at least the honda bits last a heck of along time as well..... my VTi has FHSH and it aint had one thing go wrong with the engine ever (acording to the history), like any car look after it and u have trouble free motoring, anyway its not like Nissan are "cheap" the last time my bro went to get bits :p
And when picking remember everyone elses views mean little, let her test drive it and see how she feels about it :)
