MEACH demonstrates for ME!
Monday 12th May is an important date for your diaries as National ME Awareness Day will be marked by a very special demonstration in London. Representatives from ME support, care and research groups will demonstrate outside the Department of Health before taking presentations to Downing Street to bring ME action and awareness to the heart of Government!
Sue Sherlock, founder Patron of the MEACH Trust, is absolutely delighted that this demonstration is going to take place and that MEACH will be attending.
"It is thanks to all of the hard work of the Castleford Aid for ME Group that this demonstration is happening at all. It gives the ME community a real opportunity to show just how much support there is for a higher standard of care for patients severely affected by ME/CFS. By taking our protest to the heart of the Government, we hope to raise the profile of ME even further on the national agenda and get some decisive action taken to improve standards for everyone affected by ME - whether they are a patient, a carer or a relative."
The MEACH Trust is working to create the first specialised residential care centre for people most severely affected by ME/CFS - a cross section of whom will be represented on this demonstration.
The charity believes that a specialised facility would not only benefit patients in the long term, but would help researchers to understand the complex variety of symptoms caused by ME/CFS. By working with patients to manage their illness through an individual care programme, the MEACH Trust hopes that even the most severely affected patients will be able to regain a significant proportion of their former quality of life and return to mainstream living. What's more, a MEACH Trust centre wouldn't just help those who passed through its doors - the knowledge and 'best practice' experience would be applicable to every ME patient and carer, no matter how severely affected.
Support for the MEACH concept is growing, with patients and carers getting in contact from Europe and beyond to express their support and to exchange ideas. In the UK, eminent researchers, clinicians and politicians support the MEACH Trust's work through membership of the medical research group or by advising on the many different aspects that will go into making a MEACH Trust centre a positive success.
