View Full Version : Nissan Sunny ZX
I bought a Nissan sunny ZX 1.8 16v twin cam, 3 door hatchback recently.
Its only had 2 owners from new with original 79,000 miles. All previous MOT's and loads of receipts
I needed a temporary car whilst I wait for my new car to arrive, friend convinced me to take the sunny zx for a test drive. Reluctanty I agreed and was absolutely shocked at how cool this car is, considering how much I paid.
Ive been searching the internet for information, forums etc realted to this car. There is not much info out there. Then I came across this site.
Been told the sx and sunny zx have a similar engine. The big difference is the sx is turbo charged. Ive also been told the 2 cars share alot of parts. Dont know how true any of this is..
I want to stick on a k&n induction kit, performance exhust etc etc. I just basically want to mess with my sunny zx.
Can anybody offer me info on the 200sx induction kit, will fit a sunny zx ? What about exhust ? Does anybody else have any other info with regards to the sunny zx ?
K&N actually make an induction kit specifically for the Sunny ZX. I know this 'cos a mate of mine has a Sunny ZX Coupe :)
Not sure if anyone does an exhaust though, probably have to get a custom one made
Hiya sunny,
If he's about, have a word with Matt_J - he used to have a Sunny ZX and did quite a few modifications to it. Very quick hatchback, used to put the willies up the usual suspects (nova/corsa gsi, golf gti's)

I'm Pete's mate with the Sunny ZX - yes, they're very cool cars! I'm not going to mod my engine. Instead I'm uprating suspention, wheels etc and preparing it to put a 200SX CA18DET engine into it. It is basically the same engine but with a turbo, therefore lower compression in the cylinders etc. Pete knows more about it than I do, but I'll have to keep some bits of my engine, for instance the gear box. I also want to fine more information about the ZX, perhaps we should start our own owner's club! ;)
you wouldnt have bought that car from richard wyatt would you? how much did you buy it for in the end? its gun metal grey right? where are you located the north west?
yeah i had a 3dr hatch, for years i have wanted to CA18DET oneand i could as well, been back and forth from 200 and sunny zx wiring diagrams, miss my old hatch but really the 200 takes priority over anything else, mayeb when i have a job i will do it but till then sod it...
dint do loads to my old one, janspeed list an exhaust for it, 175 quid IIRC, mild steel backbox tho goes very rusty after a year, a custome stainless job would be better, k and n yeah but ridiculously expensive, like 90 quid when the 200sx one is the same fit, and second hand on here you can get em for 30 quid...
i had a custom chip made for it, really wasnt worth it...back in the days when i was learning how commercial bollox talking wasnt trustworthy at all..
if your front pipe rusts thru get a nissan one, dont get a copied one, the nissan one is about 40 quid more but doesnt restrict the power, i noticed a big difference when a copy was put on, not happy...
k and n made **** all difference...
kyb shocks you can get, very good, but still too much roll to the car, i would look into getting custom roll bars made or see if the n14 sunny gti ones will go, as well as some of their poly bushes cos nothing is listed for the n13 anywhere....
also chassis dynamics do -35mm springs but they arent anywhere near low enough...custom ones if i did it again...
it handles very well but get some 16 inch wheels on it with some wide sticky rubber, i wish i had the 14's just couldnt do much and its a good handling car to start...if you were keeping it NA, then i would have removed the head and had it ported, found some sort of cams for it, raised the compression slightly by skimming the head within tolerances and had a good dyno tune to see what happened....
a lotta custom stuff needed for the ca18det swap tho

thanks, that was very useful! I only got mine last week (had another Sunny coupe before) but don't think much of the handling. Got the standard 14" wheels, each with different brand economy tyres which definitely won't help! If possible (to avoid insurance issues for the timebeing) I wouldn't mind getting the Nissan 15" alloys that came as an optional extra and putting on the widest tyres I can. Any idea how wide you can go on a Sunny ZX? Need to fine the 15"s on a scrappy first!

not that i knew an option was to get 15inch wheels, i doubt very much you will find them at a scrapper, my suggestion is to get some from an almera gti, or some seconds from one of the gti-r boys, a lotta imports came with 16s and the guys swap em for 17s, shop around, definitely shite tyres make shite handling, i drove my friends pug 1.9gti and it wasnt as good as the sunny, his was dropped 60mm tho on 16s....must have ****ed up the handling to be worse than the sunny as the pug was still and is recognised as the best handler of the time..
tyre width all a case of measuring and offset etc:)

Cheers. My crap tyres must go! Pete C nearly wrote my Sunny off on Sunday by over steering on a corner - It wasn't very fast byt my heart was in my mouth! Handling at present isn't half as good as my other mate's Pug GTi which was infront of us. Sadly Pete's old 200SX wheels won't fit my hubs. Never mind - they're nasty wheels anyway
yeah different pcd...take a look at thisvery jandy page and scroll down to nissan, and see all the wheels that are interchangeable, make sure you consider offset if you go out lookin...

on top of that new tyres, go for nothing but the best, have a look on www.mytres.co.uk, good year eagle f1's there delivered for 58 quid each standard size but a toyo tyre at 33 quid

Oi! What you saying about my driving bitch!? ;) :D :D Anyways, oversteer is my favourite hobby :D
Matt, birdland's is the Sunny Coupe as opposed to the hatchback ZX, not sure which one you had but his looks similar to this:

I believe most of the parts should be the same though?

Are you going to Billing then Pete? Where/when is it? You did tell me but I've forgotten. Are you taking your beast?

Oooh yes :D
And my 200 as well ;)
Mine doesn't say anything on the back. Some of the others I have seen say 'Twin Cam ZX' - is this the original badge ? IT looks very original ?
Where can I get this sticker/badge from ?

Yeah, Birdland's says that - only place I can think of to get one would be Nissan -I can't see that you'd be able to get a second hand one.
Or if you could get a piccy you could get a custom graphics place to copy it for you :)
yeah its a standard sticker, nissan will sell you one no probs im sure, have 50 quid ready:D
or alternatively be a street sleeper and dont let anyone know you ahve a gti:D

Yeah - wolf in sheep's clothing is the way forward. I want mine to look as standard as possible. However if you want I can take a pic of my badge with my digi camera and e-mail it to you so you can have a graphics company make it up.
Anyway - when I leave uni and have a bit more money I'm buying myself a 200SX :D
Mate I would appreciate that.
Do you know any graphics companies that can do this ?
Ive sent you a PM any way..

What a lovely car !!! BTW did you see how that one turned out in the end after a certain corner? :o
My next Sunny ZX will be lavished with love and attention. I must be the Sunny ZX's biggest fanboy the planet knows!

Had a Sunny ZX Coupe before the SX and it was a cracking car and very quick. Suprised a lot of people with it.
