Hi guys,

Stock suspension, stock anti-roll bar, no strut braces, high sidewall tyres. The handling is very wallowy, much more so than the old s13 i had with lowering springs on.

I'm wondering if the shocks are on the way out, or whether the 180 was wallowy by default... Anyone find they had very wallowy handling on stock suspension?

Cheers, Paul.

They are the same as the UK cars as far as I know.

I think the biggest enemy of the stock suspension, especially perhaps on the imports, is just age; the rubber bushes wear out, which I think contributes to the wallowy feeling. I think that just doing the steering column bush, steering rack bush, and tension rod bushes would probably give a noticeable improvement by themselves.

Beyond that, lowering springs and matched dampers are the obvious next step. I went to coilovers and am regretting it, but many people are happy with Tein, DW or Apex.

now that i've changed all the bushes for polyurethane and fitted some Whiteline ARB's.

Mine used to feel really sloppy at the backend which turned out to be three torn subframe bushes.

Mine was standard when I bought it and very wallowy, also quite easy to hit the bump stops if you went through a compression fast enough :)

Imported some S-tunes and fitted those - It's fapping fantastic now

I removed my coilovers and fitted some standard suspension I had in the garage recently as an experiment (the car is otherwise standard), and everytime I went round a corner it was like "man overboard!" :smash: :D

Plus it looked like a bloody 4x4.

Coilovers are tempting but i don't want a crashy nasty ride...

Ok, not as smooth as standard stuff but no where near as bouncy/crashy as near enough all other coilover sets I've experienced :)
I'd take you for a spin if you wern't milage away! :wack:

I think it's possible, just don't get cheap ones.

I'm going to get some Tein Super Streets for mine soon (my existing coilovers are worn out), which are supposed to be a really good compromise. I'll post up what they're like once they're on the car

Id suggest replacing at a minimum the subframe bushes, arb bushes and all the steering bushes this should stiffen things up immensley as the old stock ones will be shot. Also as I have been told by other if you just want factory ride quality kyb do oem replacement shocks to nissan spec for far cheaper than nissan charge, as again the old shocks will be knackered due to age and use.

Monsterer my folks live in cambridge and i'm down there every/other weekend, if you want to meet up briefly I can take you for a spin in mine.

It has 6/8 apex gen'2's and I find them very pliable and yet solid as well.

You may hate them as i've been used to coilovers for years but it might be worth a quick drive?

And to answer the original question, I had a UK s13 with stock suspension and it was wallowy as hell. I got unmatched lowering springs and it was crashy but at least it handled.

Compared to coilovers lowering springs were very harsh though.
