Depends what you wanna do.

I have two.
one is the dremel pro £89 from B&Q which is very precise.

The other is B&Q's own that comes with a flexi thing and some tools etc and was £19.77 and is absolutely perfect for porting heads, prolly not as precise but what do you expect for £20!

Both are variable speed, but the dremel is in 1K rpm increments from 5-33K, the B&Q one just has a rotary switch with about 6 settings upto about 27K.

Most of the tools are interchangeble too which is nice cos the B&Q ones are cheaper than authentic Dremel.

Dremel is just excellent. Without it quite many of my projects would have been impossible or very hard. Take a look at my sig, the grill was done with dremel, putty and patience. ;)

Don't get a rechargeable one unless you enjoy re-charging it every 20 minutes of use. Get a mains one and an extension lead!!!

You can't beat Dremels :)

probably do the polishing okay, but not ideal for doing the knives, though it prolly will do it, you need an oil stone ideally or a bench grinder.

My dremel is mains powered and I've never really longed for one with battery. As someone said above, just have an extension cord and you're fine. I would also expect the battery one to be heavier, which can't be good..

The bits are damn expensive, though. I think I'll soon be needing new bits for grinding and cutting at least. :/ And the thing is, you never really know which bit would be best for the job. But I guess you learn that in time...

As Tim 'the toolman' Taylor would say;

'More power'

I made the decision to buy a compressor and the tools that go with it, a die grinder no worries about recharging, more torque and above all else cheper attachments, hope this confuses you!

also worth a look is minicraft. used more by the modelling fraternity. ebay has loads of things to go with them.

you can get a minicraft
drill
pillar drill
lathe
grinder
sander
circular saw
etc
and again the tools will interchange with dremel and the likes
