View Full Version : What turbo's you running
Hey guys I am looking to upgrade my turbo and was wondering what turbo's your running on yours and how do they perform?
Answers on a postcard!
I had a GT2871R - .84 exhaust on mine :D
Had quite a few supporting mods though, but the graph shows where it picked up boost and produced power :)

thats a beautiful torque/power curve.
what ecu was that with?

I'm running a hks gt2530. My setup is currently untuned but the turbo should flow up to 330hp. It's a really fast spooling unit and should pack a decent punch at full capacity once it's tuned.
If I was going to buy a turbo for my 180 (mine came with the car) I would go straight for a gt2871r. That would give you loads of potential for just sub 400hp on your SR.

Power FC :)
iv not long fitted an hks 2835r 56t turbo. its basically the same turbo as the garrett gt3071r .64.
its a tiny bit laggier than my wee brothers hks gtrs .64 on his silvia.
my only problem is that the turbo cant hold a stable boost so the actuator getting ditched for an external wastegate.also i had to grind away part of the engine mount just to fit the bloody thing since its a fair bit larger than the t28 frame.
it is a totaly underated turbo with amazing performance (as long as its ext wastegated)
rated to around 420 ponies

gt2871r .64 running 1.4 boost on standard internals with 1.6 mhg
350hp and 345 torque
power fc, 555injectors and z32
I had an S15 with standard BB turbo, power FC etc, and it was running 311bhp, and was a lovely drive.
I have replaced the S15 with a 180 and im looking to upgrade the turbo. I was going to go for a gt2871r, but somebody mentioned the HKS GT-SS, i cant find much info on here about the GT-SS though??
TD06 20g with an external wastegate. If you want menacing this works well. Pushes over 400bhp at the fly. Here is a little video of how it sounds. I love the turbo, but as with any serious mod, the map that drives it is crucial.

The GT-SS would be similar to the s15 turbo i was told.Im running the GT-RS and it pulls right to the redline and have no complaints as of yet
Ive got an S15 BB turbo on the Onevia, but Ive also got a J's spec crownwheel in the diff (3.8:1 I believe) and a V-mount intercoolay.
Near to no lag at all, and fair savage acceleration - top end loses out a bit but I guess it would still crack 140. If I didnt have a V-mount and was worried about charge temps :wack:
im in the process of fitting a holset hx35 super. rated up to 600bhp, will flow 3 bar and full boost is at 3000rpm.
cheap tubby, but can be a bit involved in fitting

Looks like your going to have to cut part of the bonnet away to get that to fit!
I cant believe that will hit full boost by 3k...that said, I cant wait to be proven wrong when its up and running
I have the same turbo as norfy and should be a laugh fitting it! lol!
Impressive turbo so far though!
Cheers Aj
monsterer - dont have to cut the bonnet at all, theres plenty of clearance. ive rotated the compressor housing now so the outlet boost pipe is at the 6 o`clock position.
Madda - well i did a fair amount of research into this tubby. they are developed for diesel engines which have a short rev range and need boost very early. i rekon i will be looking at full boost by 3200rpm. i could cut that down a little if i ran a twin scroll manifold and turbo jacket.
aj82 - good luck :D if you need any tips or advice gimmie a pm, im almost ready to start up

Ahh, cool - full boost that early sounds like the holy grail of turbos, let us know how it turns out :)
love the look of this. i've got a t34 at the moment that i'm going to fit. Excuse my ignorance, but what is a twin scroll manifold?

Was gonna say, does that HX spool produce full boost at 3k.... My TD06 is smaller than that and doesnt get full chat till 4k.
hks gt rs with loads of other mods , making 400.5bhp with hardly any lag at all ! and goes mental all the way through the rev range in all gears :) .
sorry jus noticed this is the 180 section ! my bad !!

what kinda power does the redtop sr handle in standard form? (or at least standard bottom end)
holy thread revival batman.

Yeah, tis a tad random.
There are many 400hp SR's with an un opened engine.

I'm running a gt2871r .64
358bhp & 350lbft
In my opinion they are the best turbo out there for a sr.
I am running standard turbo @.9bar and have 245bhp on a dyno dynamics that is with the cat still installed.
Anyone got a hx35 or similar sized turbo for sale the one I have on the sr20vet is a bit restrictive up top.

thanks for that, music to my ears
Should have updated my findings with the hx35.
.....it was VERY laggy.
I was using the car for drift and it didn't have the quick response I needed. I got the car dyno'd at 406bhp running 1.5bar boost. The turbo started spooling at 3500rpm, I had 1 bar at 4500rpm, and then 1.5bar at 5500rpm.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad turbo. Would have been much better suited for drag use on a stroked and cam'd sr20. When the boost did come in it punched very hard and raised the revs quickly that I'd be changing gear quite quick
After that I opted for a gt28rs disco potato in a/r .64 trim, it was a huge amount better for me. I was running roughly 350bhp at 1.2 bar. I was hitting full boost at around 3000rpm and it produced the boost very well and stable. I'd say that this is the ultimate turbo for a sr20 up to 350bhp. If I was looking for 400bhp and just over I'd have gone for either a gt2871r or a td05/td06

Cheers for the update Norfy :) So its laggier than a TD06 but gives similar results. I can see around 1.4Bar of Boost around 4500rpm :)
I'm in your shoes too, I have considered downsizing to a 3072.
Thats interesting Norfy, I found the GT28RS to be more laggy on the CA than the GT2871R ....... maybe it was just my car?

Weird. I've now got that gt28rs on my ca18 skid car but I haven't run it yet. I was using a s14 t28 before so considered it an upgrade.
When were you getting 1bar by?
im on a 28r and full boost a 3k . 2871 .64 next glad to read they ant that laggy on a redtop
