Any body know any good fault finding garages in south Wales, looking for someone to fault find on the electrical side of things with an aim to solving my cars running issues, Pretty sure I have multiple problems.

I've pretty much come to the end of the line with trying to solve it myself so I need to bite the bullet money wise and put it in to a garage to sort it.

Thanks in advance:thumbs:

Ditto ?

Noticed a few problems you posted but thought you had them sorted ?

Rarely read the tech sections so haven't noticed much either

What he needs is someone who has a diagnostic cable and conzult software installed on a lappy , An electrical background and a few hours of free time would be essential as would an s14 to compare live readings from

That sounds like a stitch up lol

I have no car at present and mine has the PFC so would be useless for comparison (not to mention all my modifications to certain things lol)

Post a list of issues that you think you have with it Crowbar  also any links to threads you have created :)

Im in St Athen for a few weeks at the moment silly busy this week but should be able to pop in once im off base @ about 16:00 next week ?

Anyone got a consult software and lead i could borrow to take with me ?

I think I have a few problems tbh
1st is a cold start problem down on power until it gets up to temp
2nd once warm and under load it is dropping boost by itself, jerky, hesitating, eating fuel and over fueling

I have changed quite a few parts with no joy and it's got me stumped:confused:

As an example I was driving down the motorway yesterday and I start to put some power down it gets to 0.5 of a bar and it dumps and loses power then it comes back then it goes again you get the picture :wack:

In a nut shell it seems to have a mind of it's own on boost and is struggling to achieve what I am telling the throttle to do.

The only thing I can think of doing with it is to put it into a garage to diagnose.

And to top it off the head to mainfold needs to be helicoiled after the bolts and studs have come loose, A new head to manifold gasket was fitted about six weeks ago:cry:

Hmm sounds interesting.

Will do some research now BUT consult should make life much easier

I will link some of my other threads up now and a list of what I have done/changed

I will try and get hold of consult and a cable this week/weekend

Sure that will assist and if not then we are already onto a winner as it's mechanical :)

Ok this is what I have done to it since I got it....

s14 auto purchased with the cold start problem, The garage I got it from suspected a faulty turbo as the cause. But tbh they seemed pretty clueless.

after buying it and driving it on full boost (standard that is) there were no issues at all apart from the cold start power loss issue.

It had a baily dump valve which I binned put the re-circ valve back on then Buffy did the pidgeon mod for me as well as blocking the EGR valve.

Then it went pretty much as this.
Blitz filter/ stainless exhaust/ de-cat/bren device at 1 bar/ boost gauge/ denso plugs/

At this stage the car never felt so good :wack:

Then for some reason I adjusted the MBC slightly iirc it was because it was not quite reaching 1 bar so I turned it up a little, Half a turn maybe.

then the boost problem started, at first it was intermittent

I presumed I had a boost leak so I changed the wing mount for a second hand std unit (no change) I then got an s15 wmic and still no change

Then I changed the coil packs for a spare set that came off my other s14 that had no running probs. (no change)

It's worth noting that at this stage the under boost problem was the typical boost leak type symptoms that I kept coming across in the tech section, However it only played up under medium boost, If you put your foot down more it would pull out of it and boost hard all the way to the red line.

Then I got a brand new Bren device just in case the first one was shot (no change)

I will update this with more in a sec:wack:

Chris I have a memory like a sive (spelling) I remember you plugging your consult in when I came up for the Mot :wack:

The problem I have is I am working from tomorrow night and I finish on sunday am at 08.30 would sunday afternoon be any good to you, or next sunday would be better as I'm not working next Saturday night.

My shift pattern is a nightmare :(

Ok then I changed the Ecu temp sensor with a view to sorting the cold start
and the lambda was replaced both with no change.

Buffy then changed the turbo gaskets and head to manifold gasket all nissan parts and fitted braided turbo lines.

Changed the AAC valve and the MAF has been changed (no change)

I have had the engine compression tested last week and she made 150psi on all cylinders.

I have also binned the MBC and fitted a Profec b spec2.

Also changed the fuel pump for a walbro and fitted a type2 fmic.

Thats about all I can think of at the moment apart from the fact that the boost issue has got worse.

Chris has solved it we think:nod:
Nothing more complicated than a knackered AFM

We did a few test runs with consult plugged in and then swapped the afm for the one of Chris's car and hay presto no boost problem:D

After all the parts I have changed it has turned out to be something very simple:o

I thought I had changed it when i put my old filter on and ruled it out :smash:

I've just found my spare one and the plug is different on it so I'm going to try and clean the one that's on there, But if all else fails a replacement will be required

Fingers crossed this will solve the cold start issue as well

Thank's for your help Yesterday Chris, It's very much appreciated

The plus side of changing so many parts for me is hopefully a more reliable car and learning how things work on the car and what they do etc.

Every cloud has a silver lining and all that:wack:

It needs to be the early s14 one as the later ones have different plugs on them:thumbs:

Ahh the joys of consult ;)Not as good as it's cracked up to be  It threw a code 55 out at me :annoyed: Live data readings and gut feeling pointed me at the afm

While we're on the subject Nick does that kid with Phill's old 14 still need his car scanning ?

Just a quick update on this I have changed the sensor and it has solved all my boost issues but my idle is now very irratic, and trying to cut out I have tried adjusting the idle valve on the plenum but it makes no difference at all.

Any thoughts on the idle guys

And for the really strange one, After changing the afm the cold start problem went away for 2 days and now it's back:wack:

Chris
11-04-2009, 18:46
Do you want to swap afm's for a week for a longer test Phil ? The cold starting won't bother me as I live on a bloody big hill :wack:
