now try it on concrete :D
i've never seen the point in forward or backward rolls. Why not just hop/skip backwards or forwards? (cue bruce lee style skip forward to sidekick)
Aha its in case you get thrown by some huge ape... (theyd have to be well huge to chuck me thats for sure) or when your legging it and have to turn around quickly, or dodge someone..
Ive done it on concrete loads - youd better make sure its right - coz if you dont....
Some muppet I knew was pissed and trying to impress the ladeeez... tripped over his trews and rather than fall on his coupon, stuck his arm out to do a forward roll.
Cue snapping noise as the force of impact broke his chest/neck bone connector bitty...
And green face as he moaned a lot and waited to get back to blighty with a broken collar bone and bits.. not good with a hangover
I've only been doing it a couple of weeks, I'm still doing my rolls from kneeling ;)
Almost 400lbs/30st, of rolling mass... WATCH OUT! :D
And Phatty, since you obviously missed it.. (except that now I know how to tie my belt ;) )..

U know all these self defense doins

Art of offence = Muay Thai
All these fancy martial arts are fine for what they are but if you want to learn how to actually fight and get extremely fit, try a Thai boxing class.
I'm having my first amateur fight a week on Saturday BTW:eek:  :D

lose the glasses, get a grubbier suit, and a worn out blackbelt, and you'll look like one of those 'ard bastards who've been doing it for years :)
Glasses stay on :)
Give me several years, and I'll be flashing my hakama, and black belt like a good'un ..
Just downloading that clip now, Ade.. I'll get back to you ;)
Hee hee Dori me dearie me... Thats the worst iwama knot I have ever seen! Bet you trip over it...
Its good fun though isnt it? Stick at it!Buy your weapons too if you can, they are good to practise with on your own... Mmm grab that shaft and practise thrusting motions...
Hmmm always wondered why grappling things like Aikido always win in death cage matches, versus attacking based martial arts.
I think its because if I dont attack and you do, then you are at a disadvantage if I dont want to play by your rules...
Still not as much fun as knives and stabbing weapons though..
I think its best if you combine Aikido with another martial art though.. It takes ages before you feel confident enough to use even the basic moves. The more complicated ones, ages longer!
Im doing a bit of Krav Maga at the moment.. Israeli SF use it when cornered by Palestinians... Kind of redundant I think, they usually just use their US donated apaches AH64s to wipe out refugee camps and families though.. "Affirmative Action". Still. I have a lot of respect for a country that can invent a weapon like the Uzi. You have to admire the attitude and resolve.
LOL Ade!.. Umm.. I haven't done any weapons work so.. he wins :( ;)
I'm absolutely loving Aikido, and as each training session passes I find my fears decreasing and my confidence to just throw myself around growing. Still a bit wary about standing/moving rolls though, as the thought of lobbing my entire body at my (allegedly unbendable..) arm, just sends visions of snapping collarbones through my mind ;)
Have my first weapons seminar in early June I think, so.. then I'll be set to take on clothes-line-boy!.. :D
My knot was tied like that.. just.. to tie the belt. It did fit around me twice, but.. with not enough ends to actually tie. So.. I only have the belt around me once, I've since trimmed the belt to a length that is more suitable. :p
Once I've gained any sort of proficiency in Aikido, I do intend to cross-train. I've got my eye on Kendo, as it seems to blend quite nicely with Aikido. I'd love to be able to do something Karate/TKD related, but.. I weigh almost 30st, and although, as i found out on Sunday, I can kick above my head.. I just don't have the athleticism to do them to any successful degree. One thing I love about Aikido is that there.. aren't any kicks :)
Maybe once I become fitter, and shed some of this blubber.. I might go for a more energetic art, but as it stands, I find myself sweating like a donkey even through Aikido.
Hardest part is proving to be remember the technique names, and the rolling, due to my size. But we're getting there, slowly, but super-surely :)
Good luck m8. Stick to it! Try and go as much as you can!
Which style you do? Hombu? Iwama? I did Iwama.. very formal old style one.. Morihei wasnt so wrong you know.. O sensei did invent it after all! No matter what Sato says. Dont worry so much about gradings and stuff, if you are good you can practice loads and go in at the top end if you know an instructor well enough.
And really do try to get the weapons and practice on your own - since all the weapons moves mirror almost exactly the hand to hand stuff (or hand to kneck, leg, crotch, head, arm, etc..) and repetition is how we remember (took me ages as I say - its very formal).
Arigato, Dori - San
And dont worry about the sweating thing... take a towel in with you, to stop leaking over the crash mats.
FFS see a Doctor if you STOP sweating! This is not normal...
If you're not sweating then you're not trying:D:D:D:D:D:D
The style we study is Ki :)
The more I delve into not only the physicalities of it all, but also reading and understanding O Sensei's words, the more I just find myself drawn in. It's quite spectacular the effect on an entire life, rather than just an aspect of it. I find myself a lot more focused, and positive. And besides, It's nice to have a little direction!
I intend to grab a bokken as soon as I can, and a good friend (and a 4th kyu/blue, herself) has offered me her jo once she replaces it with a lighter version for herself, as training at home, has been something I've had to restrict to just menial exercises and all. I work for a fairly large martial arts/ boxing equipment/ clothing manufacturer, so I'm hoping to try and get a mat the size of my back yard made, so I can at least work on my rolls away from the dojo :)
I've got a super-heavy gi (not only to absorb my sweat, but to prevent any potential fat-bloke-tears-suit-when-stretching acidents, sooo.. towelling myself isn't too neccessary. Besides, watching people flail when their grip slips off your wrists is quite amusing ;)
I've been going thrice weekly, I'm considering myself lucky that I already do something else on Friday evenings, and that I don't go to the dojo, and end up paying for four sessions a week. Affording three is pushing it!
But yeah, I'm loving it, and have no intention of stopping. I figure if I can do this, and become proficient in doing so, then not only will it do wonders for me, but perhaps more importantly, will be something of a proven point, that really.. anyone can do this.
Thanks for all the words of encouragement, they really are appreciated :)
