i.e. Mechanically stupid?

You'd think a simple task of changing a numberplate would be a kindergarten task (it's not even mechanical ffs) - not for me, I only manage to get bloody think wonky so now I have to buy more sticky stuff and re-attach it. :o :o :(

I used to love mechano and lego when I was younger though so I'm

Edit: And I can't even spell, "Leg" in the second option should be "Lego" :o :D (Again, what was I thinking ;) )

I love engine work, tho haven't had much of a chance on the Starion.
If it makes you feel better, I can't even get the numberplate glue to hold.... COntact adhesive? sticks ANYTHING from wood to metal? Pah, will it hell...

The poll is probably unfair - I actually do understand how it all works but don't fancy my chances when it comes to doing anything mechanical!

I voted for stupidity

Sure I can change a numberplate and take the fog lights out .... I can even remove the stereo.

But I got lost at the whole boos guage is attached to the plenum thing ?!?!?!?

I think half the trouble with cars is not having the right tools ...... I would love to put on and take off my own cat !!! .... but can I get anywhere near underneath the car

Somewhere in between for me - I have found that once one job is completed sucessfully you get a little more confidence and try a slightly harder one.

Ive fitted my induction kit, FBU and Bailey BOV so far - think I'll try and bore the engine to 2.5l next ;)

7 weeks ago I'd have voted for stupidity, but since I've had the 190 I've found myself getting my hands dirty (oil change, coolant, Rear diff oil).

However, don't feel alone I changed the front plate on the 200 and managed to get that wonky. Bloody sticky watsits wouldn't come off. Was standing by the front of the car warming the sticky things with a hairdryer for ages looking like a fecking hairdresser

I LOVE to gather technical info on things and theoretically know how everything works, but you get me in front of it with some spanners and see what happens :D

That sounds EXACTLY like me. What's a spanner?

I like both the theory and the practical stuff really.

Having the right tools makes a huge difference to doing a job on the car. Trying to hack suspension bushes out really took its toll...

I hate rust too - things that just snap off instead of undoing are a pain.

I like building engines, gearboxes and doing the electronic stuff - mainly because I like knowing how things work.

I rebuilt my cat for the same reason, never got it started again though, poor puss. :(

as said before by others,
a while ago would have vote for stupidity, but would like to think i'm somewhere between the two now.

becomes expensive if you have to pay to get someone else to do things for you all the time.

(if you see what i mean)

Well, i'm learning, changed a tubby gasket, had my back brakes apart yesterday, fitted my zorst, decat, air filter and boost gauge, but dont think i will take on an engine re-build just yet! :D

Seems to be that most things are daunting, like back brakes, untill someone shows you, then its a piece of pi$$ and you think, "what the hell was i worried about!?"

I went for the I know what I'm doing option but it wasn't always so. Most of what I've learnt has come from being confident enough to wade in then having to sort the mess out when I inevitably cocked it up:rolleyes:

And I'm too tight to pay a mechanic ;)

I used to be an engineer, but have never dared work on the car! Agree with smiffad - lots of stuff is prolly dead simple but the thought of doing it with just a set of instructions and some pics off the bb is pretty daunting. I also have a problem in that I'm a bit of a weakling - couldn't even get my mudflaps snapped into place for god's sake! - and my height and reach aren't the same as a blokes so there's lots of stuff on the car I can't actually reach!

Luckily I've remained on good terms with my ex, who's a very good mechanic and happy to work on mine for me, and suffolk1's also lending a hand when he can :D (On the car!! before Kev starts chipping in! ;) )

I have bought my own toolkit now  and I always watch when people are doing stuff - maybe one day I'll actually manage to do some work myself! :D

Its definitly a confidence thing... I only attempt things I know I am going to be able to finish, fitting the headers and full X pipe on the Mustang was a nightmare and took a whole week of evenings and one weekend... taught me one thing...

pay someone else to do it next time!!! :D :D

i'd like to think of myself as reasonably competant.... i think i am quite good on the theoretical side but not so good putting things into practice!
