Please explain fire to me...

Unburnt fuel in a hot exhaust ignites and you get flames.

When you close/back off the throttle you cut the air supply to the cylinders and you can get some unburnt fuel entering the exhaust.... this can cause flames on overrun.

It can also be caused by incorrect timing, misfires, running rich and probably a few others things.

Thats what I thought - so it can't be good.
How come so many people on here are pleased about it then :confused: THe only flames I ever got where off my beetle, both pipes lighting up the road - still amazed the engine didn't explode...

Flames on overrun are ok... you'll notice that many racing cars do this. You'll see it happening most often when a car is being driven hard (and the exhaust is at it's hottest) and the throttle goes is closed. I don't know why people like flames (even though i do myself).... i guess maybe just a fascination with fire.... most likely because it make the car more like a real racing car :D

As for other flameage reasons ... It's the misfires/timing/fueling problems you want to avoid.

Flames happen mainly on peeps cars who have BOVs I think, because when you take foot off throttle at high boost it overfuels momentarily (thats what hurts the cats) and, like marty said, the fuel gets ignited via the hot exhaust.

As for why people like them - isnt it obvious - it looks cool :D:D:D

have to agree, it looks fcuking top, stops people driving up your ares too 'cos they're scared of getting their bumper torched:cool: :cool:
