View Full Version : IT type peeps, urgent help pls
boys and girls im goin out for a couple of hours and when i return im gonna totally re-boot my pc.
Specs are
1gig athlon iirc
128 sdram
20gig hd
It is an advent (pc world cos i didnt know any better)
Now the thing is, i have a start up disc im gonna run through it, and then re-install bit by bit, but im wondering if i can add ram just now, (i got a 128sd and a 256sd to put in on top of the original 128 cos theres 3 spaces in total) and then re-boot and the pc will recognise it, cos i tried putting it in b4 but the bugger just froze when i tried to start it up.
Even pc world said it shouldnt do this.
Or should i wipe it all, start again then add the ram (ur gonna say it shouldnt matter arnt u?)
I just want this peice of sh!t to run properly for once, or at least cure most of the software probs b4 i dump it to pc world again.
So btw, if i dissappear off the board for a while, ull know ive fecked it up.
And if anyone desperately needs to contact me then Dobergoose can get a hold of me no probs.
Kev
I've had a couple of beers so forgive me if I mis-read your post but 3 spaces? Ram chips must be fitted in pairs. If you are trying to fit odd numbers then it won't work
It will be fine fitting any number of memory dimms if it currently only has one.
Key things with the memory.
It must be the same speed as the original (Not size in mb)
Also
Your machine might not accept a 256mb dimm.
Try removing the original dimm and just using the 256mb.
If this works try adding the the 128 as the second dimm.
If that does not work it is likley the memory are different speeds.
It does matter when you add memory.
Also if you are running anything other than win 2K or XP it will not use any more than 128mb.

Ram chips havnt been fitted in pairs for years (old simms) new dimms can be on their own, or as many slots as you have available.
You can fit it when ever you like (when powered off!) with or without an operating system.
Good luck getting your PC up and running :)
SDRAM doesnt need to be fitted in pairs. You should be able to add a new module anytime you like. Are they the same speed and type, ie 100 or 133 MHz, ECC or non ECC etc. Try it with just the 256 in as well.
Did i not just say all that...

Yes:D
But Even Win 98 will still address 512MB Ram
Correct, Win 9X/ME will still run if you have more than 128mb but it will not use it.

...but wont utilise it. The system must be NT, 2k, XP to use more than 128mb RAM effectively.
Anyway, regardless of the OS, the system should get to the BIOS at least with your new memory, if not you may need to alter the jumpers (if it has any) or try using the new memory only. They could be different speeds too, in which case it wont work.
If you want to sort the software problems, get a frsh copy of 98/2k and reload the pc from scratch and not PCworlds boot up discs as theyre just an image of the system they like to think is useful - ie. crappy tools etc.

I am not gonna start an argument, but i have been building Win 98 Audio Workstations for quite a while. 256MB seems to be an optimum, 512MB is still an advantage when running plugins.
Check out the Tech sites for their findings.

Fraid not. going from 32mb to 64mb has major advantages, 64 to 128 2 thirds more, then after that your talking little difference.
98 just isnt smart enough, its a mix of 16 and 32 bit code on a FAT file system.
ok guys ur kinda loosing me here.
All the memory is pc133, so no worries there.
Its windows ME, so are u telling me there is no point in putting in any extra?
But games are slow, and i got black hawk down yesterday and it says 256ram required.
Help
infact unless i get a reply soon, ill have wiped it anyway.
But thanks for allthe input boys, i appreciate it ewven if it did confuse me.
Kev
Ok im sure this will give all u boys a laugh, but how the F*CK do i re-install this mother f*cker?
Ive done it b4, and it was as the sheet said it should be, that u load up the pc with the recovery disc and it gives u 4 options then u pick the one u want.
But this time it just comes up at gives me individual checks of all the plug ins.
I DONT GIVE A F*CK ABOUT THE F*CKIN PLUG INS
I just wanna wipe it and start again:mad:
oh and for some reason it seems to think that drive e is my rom, not drive d
sick of this fookin peice of shit!!!
And my fookin head hurts!!!!!!!
Ive tried putting in the ram, which ever way i do it apart from the original config ie. its own one in the 111st slot and nout else, the pc just freezes then wants to start in safe mode.
Surely not every single board ive tried of ram is bloody faulty?
Is there some way of de-activating the slots or sommat?
Wat could pc world have done to my pc to do this??
Ive tried putting in my back up floppy, and it just looks for dos commands
Ive tried powering down and removing the battery, but it makes virtually no differance.
Tell me a way to wipe thie bitch completely so i can start again, b4 i slit my f*ck wrists.
I HATE FOOKIN PC WORLD W*NKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What do you mean by Plug-ins Kev??
Dave
Do yourself a favour and get rid of ME as well, has so many bugs will cause cames to crash as well. Even 98 is better, but i would get 2K or XP if i was you ;)

Oh, hes on ME???
Ah there ya go then! Even Microsoft admitted ME was a mistake. I realised this when I asked for support on something and got the response " We dont support ME as it is for home use really" What they meant to say was "We cant believe ME got distributed and so even we wouldnt put it in a professional environment (where the critics are!)"
I think both of my ME reloads worked for about a week, and died after that - did look nice though for that short period of time!
Kev bring your PC base unit to the next meet along with the RAM you want putting in and I'll take it home and fix it up for you / tell you what's broke if it is. You can pick it up when you like, I'll sort it quickly cos I know I hate being without a PC for even a day lol!
BTW I've been doin this sort of thing for years and my job is in IT hardware support / development.

Ok guys looks like the xp upgrade has fallen through as me mate cant find the cd. DOH!!!
So can anyone tell me just how to wipe everything.
Cos once thats done then i can put in the recovery disc and it will just load up the me stuff so i can do my project for uni, that needs to be in for monday.
Just tell me how to wipe her.
And tell me if there is anyway to switch of ram sockets?
Kev
*DISCLAIMER*
I hereby take NO responsibility for lost data, you follow these instructions at your own risk and you understand this will remove EVERYTHING from your C: drive!
*DISCLAIMER*
Right,
Be VERY sure you want to do this mate and that ALL your stuff is backed up!!!!!!!!
Make a boot disk (unless you have one already)
boot up with the disk and type in
A:\> FORMAT C: [ENTER]
Then answer "Y" to the prompt. This will then COMPLETELY wipe everything on your C: drive, if this is what you need for your recovery disk, then voila!! nothing on C:
HTH
