just as the little hatchback was coming good, hopefully some 'privateer' entries will still fly the subaru flag with atkinson and solberg in the seat...

Subaru has announced its decision to withdraw from the 2009 World Rally Championship.

This sudden decision was in response to the widespread economic downturn that is affecting the entire automotive industry, and follows Suzuki’s withdrawal announced yesterday.

After 20 years in the sport, during which time the Prodrive-run Subaru World Rally Team has won six World Rally Championship titles, this is not only sad news for Subaru and the team, but also for millions of rallying fans around the world. Thanks to its highly successful World Rally Championship programme, Subaru has developed into one of the world’s most widely recognised and evocative automotive brands

I heard the rumours about this a few weeks ago :(

To be fair they havent be compedative for a few years really so like Honda in F1 they are cutting their losses  Although last week they was talking about signing Gronholm for the 09 season :wack:

Shame really :(

Oh well so its just Ford and PSA :wack:

At least it will now be easy to intorduce a control engine to minimise costs - unfortunately it will be a TDCi :wack:

The amazing shrinking world of motor sport! :wack:

I wander with all the manufactures giving up if they will go back to the old Class A or similar regs which were there to encourage privater competitors?

Reading that article on Suzuki, it does make you wonder how Ford could continue to plough money into WRC after seeking a bail out from the US gvmt

he's probably go to F1 if given the chance :D

WRC without subaru won't be the same for me, although they haven't done anything in the last 5 years :wack:

They havent asked for a bailout, they are supporting the GM one ;)

Its still profitable for Ford as we are good at it  if the car became uncompedative then i would expect them to pull the plug

I want to see a Focus RS in BTCC :D it would kick all their arses :whip::thumbs:

IIRC it wouldnt be allowed ot run as its turbo charged and a 2.5l engine, max is 2.0l N//A unless its a diesel

Sad Day :(

I must admit, i have stopped watching the highlights of the rallys now. I dont find there is much competition for Leob out there-its like Schmacher in F1 IMO makes it boring to watch.

Same here I have to say. The fields seem so much smaller than I remember and no more stories of people struggling home with a car they have dragged out of a ditch.
By accident the other week I watch a program about Colin MCrae when he was in a Legacy. He kept putting in on its roof but did give up

One of the coolest exhaust notes ever ! and the 1600's also had a brilliant noise to them.

the funny thing is that the new scooby was designed with rally in mind due to the aerodynamics of the hatch type cars and now they pull out

Seb binned the C4 last week in Wales iirc. still won despite a dodgy time penalty.

He's really good:eek:. hurts to say it but he's a class above Colin;)

it's been a tight championship this year between Ford/Hirvonen and Citroen/Loeb. it's still good to watch:nod: the car control of the top guys is immense.

I saw that myself on Dave a few years back, it was his first Norwegian rally and all the locals loved him for it! He was a legend :notworthy

Loeb's car control is unbelievable at times but he's just not as exciting to watch, maybe he's just too predictable? It would be great to see him in F1, if only to give the WRC boys a chance! Still a quality motorsport though

minor bumpage:)

Rally Ireland was last weekend - sadly i didn't get over to see it:( gutted

youtube incar footage of Loeb - overshoots a junction about 1 and a half mins in but he's incomprehensibly quick throughout

<object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sBpyA6evHmM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sBpyA6evHmM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>

i'm awaiting a dvd from my dad with the irish telly coverage of the thing. apparently Pirelli cocked up somewhat by offering either slicks or snow tyres for the weekend:rolleyes: wets might have been handy;)

Seb, having won the thing already, chose the wrong tyres for the donegal town special stage, but put on a show for the crowd and threw it round like a mk2 escort. 4 seconds slower than Hirvonen for the stage
