View Full Version : Help guys :( engine wont fire...

Just been out to the car, but she aint playing ball tonight. Not driven since last night...

put key in, turned, it caught but revs went to like say 500rpm then died out, but in less than 1 second (guess i should have kept turning key longer or pumped the pedal)...

Anyway, tried again, but all u can hear is the starter motor turning fast, but nothing catching.... so its like theres no fuel in the car (theres under 1/4 qtr of a tank), or a belt which makes somthing else turn has snapped ?
car wont start :( dont know what to do, or what the problem is...

Any ideas ?

Stuie

when you say you can hear the starter turning, can you also hear the engine cranking over or just the starter spinning?

It could be flooded out...pull the fuel pump fuse out, turn it over 10 times, then put it back in and try again.

if that doesnt work.

1. pull a out plug, earth it (whilst still connect to the coil pack) and check you have spark.

2. if yes, pull off a fuel pipe and see if you have fuel piss out when u turn it over.

Phoenix, if he had a ca18 I would be worried about the cambelt, but he has an sr20 which it chain driven, so hopefully its nothing serious.

Joe, this is me were talking about now, wheres the fuses ?!!!
when u turn the key, u hear (excuse the french) ,eh eh eh eh eh eh eh and then normally it catches and goes Bruuuuuuuuuum ! :) :) (hehe)
in my case, it dont catch and go bruuuuuuuum ! just keeps going eheheheheheheheheh eh :(

Have you replaced the fuel pump? As Joe said it could be flooded or the pump may have died. It could be a problem with the electrics to the spark but that seams to be rare on these cars.

its a walbro fuel pump, 10 months old, and i can hear it wizz when i turn key...
am gonna go outside again in a mo
and try putting in gear, and rocking the car, see if that helps ?

yetiboy
04-12-2008, 22:56
Putting it in gear wont make a difference if the engine is turning over.
Lock and unlock the car a few times on the blip to make sure the immobilizer is off and try again.

Charge the battery

StuartUK

engine isn't turning, just the starter motor is turning, its not catching to turn the engine... battery is fully charged.... guess i need to pull tubes out and look to see if fuel comes out somewhere ! :wack:

Old Sierra I used to have would fire the starter motor but wouldnt engage the flywheel when it was a bit flat

Dont know if its the same with the 200's though :ghey:

dood do you need to get her running for work in the morning?

My bet is its flooded and the fuel pump fuse should do the trick

yetiboy
04-12-2008, 23:14
From your earlier post it sounds like the engine is turning over but not firing. Pull the battery's out of the blip(is it still the nats key fob) leave for a minute and then put them back in. Sounds like a possible immobilizer issue. Did it to me once and after i put the battery's back in and locked and unlocked it all worked fine.

Am I reading it wrong???

Is it turning over and not catching? Or just the starter motor spinning?

StuartUK
04-12-2008, 23:18
it makes the noise so that the starter motor is turning, but theres no spark...
and have been using the key, not the FOB for past 3 weeks, as battery is low in the fob...
I'll go find these fuses :) and engine is not turning, ie, its not trying to catch, just the starter motor is spinning...

If it sounds normal but just not catching then the engine is turning, not just the starter?

StuartUK

StuartUK
05-12-2008, 13:35
no, went out... turned key, i got a slight noise as if the engine were gonna catch and fire, but then went back to the normal turning sound (turns fast mind).
I got Dragon rescue coming out, but i wont hold my breath with them !!

If they cant do the trick, can i call on my good buddies to take a trip to see me ? (cardiff bay, by ikea..)

StuartUK
05-12-2008, 14:11
yeah, any help would be appreciated guys... Dragon been out, could'nt fix it..
I live down the bay bit, opposite Morrisons (1 min from Ikea..)

Confirmed that:

Fuel is being pumped through ok......
battery ok
he said could be a possible ecu fault, as the injectors/sparks arnt doing there bit to fire ? timing issue maybe ?

slider91
05-12-2008, 14:14
nope wrong wrong and wrong they aint got a clue stuie mate this is how bad they are they said the bottom end of my xantia was knocking when the car was sucking in air through the fuel pipe and causing det lol and thats on a common diesel car lol

slider91
05-12-2008, 14:17
they also said that traceys old 13 wasnt worth anything after the roof was cut off until I told them what it was and how much we could get for it as parts lol :D

StuartUK
05-12-2008, 15:28
if it were a timing issue, and the sparks aint firing at the right time, would resetting the ECU and taking the battery off help to sort this out ? i am stuck without my car, big time ! :( :( :(

Or, worst case which it could be: Compression not high enough ? say my engine is cranking too fast, i read somewhere that could be a compression related issue, which stops the engine firing ?

Have you checked the coil pack connectors are on tight
CAS plug connected ?
have you taken the plugs out to see if there is any fuel getting to them.
Had any work done on the car recently?
What was the last mod done

StuartUK
05-12-2008, 16:02
no work, no recent mods, just a motorway trip from southampton back to cardiff....
and no, i aint touched coils and stuff, i would end up breaking somthing !!!
Hopefully Woody will be popping round shortly, just hope he got a tool to take the cover off to get to the sparks....

I aint got much money at the mo, but got £20 to give to someone who can fix it for me, or recommend a garage to try and get it to :)

05-12-2008, 16:25

StuartUK
05-12-2008, 18:07
WOOOOOOOOODY IS DA MAN !!!!! :) :) :) :D :D :D

car all sorted now, somehow, i flooded my spark plugs, so he pulled out the fuel pump fuse, put foot to the floor on pedal and cranked it. then if i remember correctly, put fuse back in, and cranked again, and it fired ? :) :)
to note, i am like 1000 miles away from having my 18000k full service (got denso plugs in)..... NGK for me next time ! :)

Once again, CHEERS WOODY, really helped me out, and i am most grateful :)

Stu dood im glad i could be of help :D

It was indeed a simple case of flooding
I just pulled the fuel pump fuse and cranked it with wide open throttle andlet it clear itself, then cranked again and popped the fuse back in and she burst into life :)

Now i hope stuart remembers what to do if it happens again?

Bloody denso's lol I had a set only last me 4 weeks :wack:

Dont forget a new set of plugs dood ;)

Most glad i could be of help

I had this exact problem with mine and didnt have a clue what to do....The AA man who came to visit did the same as Woody and she fired straight away.....It was caused by me revving the car because someone wanted to hear the dump valve and then turning it off"!"
