View Full Version : What's your motorway speed?
What is your average speed you travel at on a motorway in normal conditions (i.e. no heavy traffic)?
Yeah, 80 leptons-ish.
Was more like 100 until I got caught and banned :o

Between 90 and 100 if conditions permit.... enough to stay out of the "automatic ban" region.

i thought that a 1 lepton = 0.5 mph from reading the road kill section.
even then some of you were breaking the speed limit. ;)
Disrgaceful.

80 indicated in your car is roughly 75, add general flux of traffic, road conditions... i would be surprised if anyone got nicked for doing 80
I used to travel at 130+ on motorways.. occasionally flat out all the way from Swindon to Manchester, traffic permitting.
Managed Manchester to Swindon in a little under 2 hours once, all the way down the M6, it was a BMW, an Audi and myself taking it in turns to lead, just.. motorway buddying at about 130+. Considering Cheltenham to Swindon should take about 35-40 minutes.. I thought I did rather well. That was just to get home in time for an Air Attack league game, too. *laughs*..
I hit an indicated 160+ on the M4 at 3am, once.
I got overtaken by a Plod T4 on an empty M5 one evening, whilst I was doing 120 in my ex-girlfriends fathers Nissan QX, he just overtook me, slowed me down to 80, then pulled off.
I'm very lucky to have my license. And I'm not proud, but I never drove excessively fast when it wasn't safe to do so. Usually always at night, but it's still no excuse. :(
I now travel at 80/90 on motorways. Usually 80-ish, unless I'm hurrying for something. I'm past the period where I have to drive like a prat to prove something to myself, thankfully :)

90 normally if all is clear.:)
I saw a programme a while ago where traffic cops where chatting and they were saying that they rarely stop anybody doing 90:) unless the conditions are bad.
I was actually told by a copper that they won't bother if you are doing 80

I was done doing 90mph, they told me that anything up to the early 80s they'll leave be, above 90 tho and they'll 'aveya :(
2 years today i got my SP50 :( LEAVE MY LICENSE FOUL BEAST
85, cruise control on, sit back and enjoy the ride :D
85 is the speed of choice for me too... :)
I used to do around 95 but it seems to have crept up recently :(
Getting the boost gauge was possibly the worst thing I ever did....I seem to watch that instead of the speedo! I have the advantage that 90% of my miles are done on the M3 or the M25, both of which contain fairly fast drivers - I figure that if you go with the flow, you're less likely to be caught.
And yes, I was done almost a year ago - but on a bank holiday when everyone else was doing 70...so I stuck out like a sore thumb lol. I try to keep with the flow...but generally keep below anything that would mean a definite ban :)
Normally between 80-90 depending on traffic/weather conditions, got banned once for 101.2mph in a spitfire on the A13, learnt my lesson after that
I must be getting old these days I tend to stick below 80 and rarely go above 85.
Not that I think their is anything wrong with over a ton just I dont want the ban that goes with it
Cheers
Steve

Surprised they didn't throw the book at you, flying an aircraft down the A13. Grossly irresponsible

I do most my traveling in my deasil, so usually hang around the 70mph area, in the 200 its usually around 80
70mph, coz i Like to have some money left at the end of the month :(
I'm about 80 aswell, unless trying to keep up with fastercainy in his new evo when its well into ban and engine blow territory.
Luckily none have happened .... yet :)
I religiously travel at 69.99 MPH on the motorway and would like to mention the fact that I have never broken the posted speed limit once, never, not even when it was clear roads.
I have absolutely no idea where the six points I had a while back came from. (I think my drivers lisence was abducted by aliens and altered while I was sleeping):D :D :D
Alg;)
I like driving around 60ish..
I like to cruise... it doesnt bother me when cars voom past... but when someone wants to play I will be game :)
I think driving at 60 is a natural reaction because I used to have to pick up my sister who went to school about 25 miles away (half motorway and half town roads) and was only given about £4 to make the journey by my stepdad, so if I went any faster then I would prob run out of petrol....
But dont worry... Im learning to go faster;) :D
I've voted 90, but that was in my '3i, i reckon when i get my 200 it'll be more because you dont realise what speed you are doing

...A ban on automatics hey?
not a bad idea :D
80-90 depending on conditions etc.
If I ever do over 90 Im constantly on the lookout for plod anyhow so it's just not worth the hassle!
Dave
I tend to do 80-85
My mate got stopped on the M6, the officer took 3 readings and the third one was over 90. He told him he wouldn't have pulled him but if he'd stayed under 90.

You poor misguided individual
Tend to crusie between 80 and 90 on the Mways in my own time, whilst on work time 60-70 cos it keeps me out the office for that little bit longer :D

Usually between 85 and 90. Don't think 've even touched a tonne in this S13.
This I think is due to a combination of the previous S13 having a dodgy radiator and being tempted into a 145mph melle with a Golf of some description.
Killed the Golf and subsequently my engine !!!:( (Head gasket)

Am i the only one that finds a constant 80mph the best mpg, better than the usual 56mph
'bout 80, I've too many points on my licence :(
Because the 200 has such long gears you might find that around 80 is the perfect comprimise between having the footdown too much to actually be cruising when slow (i.e. labouring the car a bit) and reving too much and going quicker? Either that or Kev's motor is fooked :p ;)

I must be going senile!!
I tend to cruise around 80-85 on my bike, except when I'm going to Southampton, for some reason the A3 is my favourite road in the World and i have to ride really fast on it. Had a cool race with a BM last summer and he bottled at 120 ish.
When my SXy works, I cruise at around the same if I'm not in a rush, I am defo not fussed by going lots faster though it seems so tame compared to the bike. Also the music I'm playing makes a difference, big time.

I'll tell you about 'law abiding citizens':
I live in a Village about 5 miles from the M5.
Every Summer there are about 10days when there's a f*cking big pile up on the M/way and the Village is basically closed in one direction because the traffic has to go somewhere and we are it.
And I mean a nose-to-tail queue that can last 3,4,5 hours (has been more).
And the reason?
Those fantastic 'law abiding citizens' that don't speed - EVER! - but haven''t got a f*cking clue how to drive, especially on their annual M/way trip to Cornwall
These are the same Muppets who don't ever use the inside lane / their mirrors / indicators) and then either drive up someone's arse or pull out and get stuffed.
BUT, as long as you don't speed.......

Now and again a good rant is a good thing!
Just remember what law enforcement is all about.......
£ £ £ £ £ £ £
.......And anyone who says different clearly has no grip on the concept of Public Opinion
