:D its fixed !! :D
after countless hours of toil my Sx is finally fixed :)
just wanted to post here and say thanks to everyone who helped :
Martbluesx, Jacko and Ickledevil - i couldnt have done it without you guys :)
just spent all afternoon taking my turbo all off again and fitting my new pipe and then refitting it all with my fingers crossed. started her up and after all the smoke had died away  from where all the spilled oil/coolant was it was looking good. just got back from a spin into the countryside and it appears to be all systems go
as long as it holds up ill be looking like this permanantly for the next couple of weeks --> :D
i cant believe how much more the boost kicks in when i floor it (i get 1.1 bar!) , at low boost (sub half a bar) its back to business as usual before the gaskets blew. my zorst sounds even louder now too :) (take a look at the pic of the gasket i took of last weekend  )
anyway, just wanted to share that with you lot :)
Cheers guys,
Matt
p.s NO MORE ASTRA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) :D

Satisfying feeling eh, when its all back and running again
Mine has been a rigt turd! this weekend   I took the manifold off again to see if I could do anything with the broken manifold to head stud, I had to hire out an angle drill again to try and drill out the remains of the stud, I used the old cast iron manifold as a guide to try and stop the drill bit drifting off again....I spent literally hours doing this, it was horrible!
Steve Young made me a threaded aluminium plug to put in the hole and provided me with all the drills and taps to drill out the hole in the cylinder head to 14mm and tap it, the plan was to insert the plug nice and tight and drill and tap a 10mm hole in that for the new stud. However this didn't work as I couldn't get very good threads in the hole
So I decided to wak in some JB Weld liquid metal, goddamn stuff just kept slowly seeping out of the hole, so I stuck a peace of plastic over it. I could monitor it as I had to go out and when I checked it the following morning most of the stuff had oozed out of the hole and down the side of the head/block
Anyway I've put some more in and clamped a piece of plastic over the hole to hold it in place, hopefully I'll be able to drill and tap it on monday and put it all back together....but I'm pretty sceptical that this JB Weld stuff will be up to the job, I think I may have to put the original manifold back on as that's a lot stonger, the obx one had actually bent across the flange with the pressure and heat:eek:
And the new water feed pipe to the turbo has split too, I'd only replaced it last week at a cost of £47  so I coated both of them with JB Weld
Oh well

jesus!
us midlands lot arent having much luck this last couple of weeks :(
ive still got my fingers crossed that mine holds up ok and doesnt break again anytime soon
those metal water feed and oil feed pipes are rubbish,i cant believe how easily they break
my replacment oil feed cost me £40 from nissan, altho it is a bit of a better design that the original and allows a bit more flex.
Im starting to get worried about my clutch as its has started to smell quite a lot lately :(

Viva Reliable Honda :D !!!!
Snap! That piccy of your gasket is exactly the same as mine! :D to the finest detail, and i know how much of a bastid they are to change, but very nice once you have! Is it me or are loads of us having the exact same problem in the last month? Is march the "national turbo inlet gasket knackering" month? :D

B@STARD!!!!        finally got car back together at 9pm, still leaking water from turbo water feed pipe  Started the tw@t up, it now sounds worse than ever, nasty clacking noise from No 4 cylinder (where I broke stud) despite fitting new stud into tapped hole filled with JB weld and using original cast iron manifold  Something is very wrong :( at the very least the tubby and manifold are going to have to come off again, I'm getting used to it now, but I'm getting really pi55ed of with working on the car only for it to run worse  :o
Matty keep us posted with your car, lets hope its something easily fixed, if not then join me with some alchohol therapy :D :(

FECK!
my sx is really being silly now :(
at least i got her home but now my parents are laying into me saying "why do you have to keep messing about making it go faster? thats why it keeps breaking" - what a load of cobblers ! :p
they dont wanna listen to me that cars do actually break down on their own from time to time, just cos i had it off the road all last week while i was sorting out a new oil feed pipe they are reacting as if its constantly breaking down, which it isnt :(
god i hate it when they just dont wanna listen to sense
Mart - sounds like mine and yours are as bad as each other :(
MattyGee
17-04-2003, 19:34
looks like it might .. possibly..be...working..again... ;)
i dont wanna say too much and jinx it but .. it ..looks .... ok...
so far so good...
i didnt actually change the coil pack just disconnected the leads to all of them and reconnected them - then it worked   :D
you didnt hear this from me ok ? ;)
keep it to yerselves eh ?

Fingers crossed for ya mate :)
Pulled my tubby and manifold of again today, only took about and hour this time and I think the cause of the noise this time was that the JB Weld I put in the hole was ever so slightly proud, just enough to allow the manifold to leak, so like you Matty I'm cautiously optimistic..but lets just keep it between me and you for now :D

Mart - fingers crossed for you mate, you could do with a bit of luck with your Sx :)

 :( Turbo/manifold off and on again, it had been blowing past gasket so I rubbed down the JB Weld as it was ever so slightly proud and replaced the gasket and it still makes exactly the same noise, so either the noise is still blowing past manifold (I haven't put nut on last stud as the jb weld is not strong enuf) or its piston slap  and a new engine
On a lighter note, while working on car on Friday there was a big crashing noise   So I stood up and looked across at the road. Right next to my car was a 24 hour flat bed recovery truck with the cab flipped over, windsrceen on the tarmac   . So I stepped over and opened the door (had to reach up and the door folded down towards the floor) and as I did this mad white dude with dreds and shades jumped out acting a bit crazy:eek: :D He seemed a bit desperate to get the cab back on the vehicle cos he didn't want to get done by the rozzers.
Between him, his mate, myself and a few locals we got the cab back on and managed to persuade the nutter that the truck wasn't safe to drive (the cab to chassis mountings were rotten  ) and get it over onto the side of the road.
Unbelievably this nutter wanted to drive this truck to wherever despite the fact that there was nothing now securing it to the vehicle
And rather annoyingly and fittingly I managed to break the handle to my trolly jack whilst helping to get the truck off the road :(
It was funny tho :D

 never a dull moment round your way eh ? ;)
i "think" i may have found the actual problem causing my mis-fire.
somehow the connector that goes to the top of the very first of the coil packs (the one right up by the windscreen) was hanging off and only just making contact  i have no idea how it got like that but ive attached it coprrectly now and so far it all seems to be going ok. :)
I know why your car is playing up Matty.
You car feels ahamed. Ashamed and dissapointed.
..... Ashamed because unlike the 'other' cars, yours has to drive around with red paint splattered on the front, and embarased because you shoved a loud exhaust on there so all the 'other' cars will look at it, and laugh at it's red disaster.
And dissapointed in you for not fixing this problem sooner! Your car is taking it's revenge.
Personally if I was in your shoes ..... I would take your dad out to your car and get him to appologise. ;) Then let the car run him over a couple of times.
MattyGee
22-04-2003, 17:57
oh yer ded now Dom ! ;) :D
i have to admit that the red paint situation is embarassing but right now i cant afford to rectify it :(
RED Paint   Whats that all about then Matty?
MattyGee
22-04-2003, 19:14
i..i..dont like to talk about it  :o
but anyway here goes:
basically when i first had my Sx i had a few un touched up stone chips oin the bonnet so one day while i was out my dad decided to do me a favour and paint over them, but as he had no damson coloured paint lying around (as you dont) he used "the next best thing" (how this phrase haunts me still :( ) red paint from his cavalier
my poor sx now looks like it has recently run over something and its blood has dried on the bonnet :(
god i need to get her a re-spray
LOL sorry shouldnt laugh.
I have stone chips all over my car and i need mine sorted. Would be nice to be before Billing tho.
One nasty bit on my bonnet came from a squash ball sized rock bouncing on the bonnet going along the M25   I couldnt believe my eyes bloody left a small dent in the bonnet too :(
MattyGee
22-04-2003, 19:22
 i HATE stonechips SO much
when i ever manage to get mine re-sprayed im gonna have about 50 coats of laquer put on it so that no stone chips/scratches will ever penetrate my paintwork again
