View Full Version : Speedo calibration
As all speedos are inaccurate and what with zero tolerance from the police (certainly in the Avon and Somerset area) I'm seriously considering getting my speedo calibrated (as long as we're not talking silly money).
As I haven't got the faintest where to get this done is this a viable option and who'd do it?
Or am I living in cloud cuckoo land?

Do it yourself.
Find a road with a 'measured mile' and drive it at an indicated 60mph. Stopwatch it to see how long it takes you.
e.g. If it takes 64secs to drive the mile you are actually doing 56mph.
You cannot sensibly get the speedo to read accurately.

Apparently http://www.speedograph-richfield.co.uk/ will re-calibrate most speedo's not just old ones. May be worth giving them a call. Also, imports need the speedo's recalibrated so maybe an SVA preparation specialist can help also?
For some good info on what to do if you do get stopped for speeding look at www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk (http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk) There's some stuff there about what plod have to do with regard to calibrating their speedos.
Or for a more pro-active approach (whatever that means, try www.snooper.co.uk (http://www.snooper.co.uk) http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Speedo calibration is certainly an issue if you replace your wheels/tyres with ones of different overall diameter, as this will alter the rolling radius size, so the distance travelled for every rotation of the axel is affected. eg going form 17 x 205 with a 60 profile to 18 x 225 on a 40 will reduce the rolling radius from 1574 to 1413mm, so your speedo will read optomistically by approx 10%.

Its virtually impossible to get a stock analogue speedo to read accurately.
You'll need a fapping expensive piece of kit to do that.
