Well I got the car beginning of this year and have been working on it slowly since then, now the Winter is knocking at our doors Ive decided to start working on the rust patches.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/100_0079.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/100_0077.jpg

I started off with a pretty standard car, In very good condition on the outside but realised on the first MOT that the underneath would need attention at some point.

Anyways a few pics of how it stands now and of the working progress so far :)

Well i got the bumper back on after a night of letting it dry, very happy with the results :) I then started on with removing the rear subframe, all was going well until i snapped one of the last bolts i needed to remove!

Anyway a few pics I took today, and the offending bolt which is the next job to be attacked :)

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0001-2.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0001-Copy.jpg

The furthest bolt in the pic is the one that has snapped, there is a nut welded up inside which must have broken loose so now the bolt just turns. FUN TIMES :D

i like the rims, go well with the car!!

Well here is the weekend up date, didnt get much done as I spent most of it messing around fitting a mates coilovers with him

After a whole week of worrying I cut down through the rear passanger seat base and to my joy I could see the top of the captive nut that had snapped! Cutting it out from the bottom wasnt really my favourite option as the angles were so tight so instead I drilled it from the top which in turn let me get a chisel to hold the nut and stop it turning whilst I undone it again from underneath. That alone made me a happy man.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0004-4.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0005-2.jpg

Then it was just a case of undoing the subframe bolts which I had already loosened and dropping the lot out.

Overall im pretty happy as the rust isnt as bad as i originally thought but I wish i had cracked all the suspension arms whilst it was bolted up on the car, it will be a bit harder doing it on the floor with the lot moving.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0007-1.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0008-1.jpg

Typically once I got it out with half the prop still on the diff I found the 14mm spanner I needed to seperate it right at the diff

Any hoot a few pictures of where i stand now, this next weeks evenings will be spent cleaning the lot up and ordering the new arms - happy days! :D

Well done one the hole - very accurate drilling

You gonna spot weld it back into place then or you have a diffent plan ?

dazz150
12-10-2008, 19:31
To be honest I think im just going to put a lock nut in there with some thread lock and do it all back up when it comes to it, I cant see in problems with that. :D

Nice work there mate! Keep up the good work!
I have been giving my chassis a once over for the last week! found an inch scab of rust on the end of my sill :cry:

12-10-2008, 19:59

Cheers Paul, gutted to hear about your rust - Im not sure yet but I think i may need some welding on my sills! Im hoping its just surface rust and looks worse than it is but I bet im wrong :(

Haha thats typical Chris, I spent ages searching to try and find out what other people have done in that situation and couldnt find any decent worthwhile threads. And it was so recently posted aswell

EDIT: Thats why i never found that thread, he has snapped the subframe bolt - they were fine with me, instead I managed to sheer the bolts holding the L Shape bracket to the big subframe bolt :wack:

I snapped the main one also:( I almost snapped one of those off as well:wack:

Your call mate but 90% of people reckon that the Diff oil cooler has/will never work,so its about a 3kg saving and you can get at the rear chassis easier!
Whipped mine off last week, full of dust and didn't even smell of gearbox oil.

Im not sure if that would give me problems out on track though :( I will ask a few of the track boys if they have noticed any problems without one.

I got the subframe bushes out tonight, results are a nose full of black boggies, burn marks on my legs from hot rubber and a saw thumb :wack: All in all another good evening of work :D

Just a few more pictures, Was going to send the subframe for sand blasting but decided to just persevere with the wire brush + drill. Certainly a job requiring patience :D

Got the metal inserts out of the subframe today ready for the new bushes to go back in, wasnt as bad a job as i expected.

I made one massive mistake however, when I removed the diff I didnt realise that the back bolts doubled up :D Resulted in me melting out one of the bushes thinking that it had jammed it self up. Only to find that I hadnt undone on of the bolts  So I also need to add Diff bushes to the list!

Anyway I got the topside all painted up and waiting to dry now then I can get the underside finished off. New bushes and arms should be here next week, bad news Is Im going to have to go out into the cold now to start under the car :(

Well there has been a fair bit of progress recently but It is still not on the road

Big thanks To S14a.Marc who helped with some of the tedious underside grinding and painting, Subframe Is now all painted and awaiting assembly. The sills were not as bad as anticpated actually, passanger side wont require any extra attention but the driver side will need a touch up sooner rather than later.

A few pics of the work In progess.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0023-1.jpg

Now a slight concern with the subframe bushes, Ive been sent the wrong numbers :( 3topside (flat surface ones) and 5 bottomside (recessed for nut) which has meant ive needed to put one of these on the top - can anyone see this causing a problem?

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0002-6.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0003-7.jpg

The only issue I can see is potential water getting in there and rusting but I can sort that out If thats the only draw back:)

-Marc-

got some more done then. now get back to work and finish it:whip:

do you think these sills are ok?

Hey i gave them a little stab in the end :wack:

It got bloody cold quickly today so I retreated to the garage to get the bushes all in - next step is setting up the new arms :)

Sorry Gav, had a pretty eventfull day today by my standards!

Again Marc came down to help out so got the underside all painted up, it still needs a few more touches over some spots I missed but the bulk of it is done :)

Apex also got the diff bushes sent out so we set about *smashing* them in, extremly tight fit and certainly wont allow any movement. When I removed the subframe I done It as a whole unit but It weighed a tonne moving it by hand so Instead we put it up just as the frame and diff. It was much easier this way especially as the metal bushes are quiet stiff over the subframe studs.

Only downside was I forgot to get the handbrake cables in situ before offering up the subframe which resulted in and hour of fiddling around trying to get the bracket bolted down to the subframe ( Marc convieniently left just as I set about this part )

Couple of more pics I took along the way then, adjustable arms are now all lubed up ready for assembly tomorrow. Just a case then of hubs going up then Waxoyl the lot :)

Anyway..........Its all back together now :D

Still in the air though as I want to let the waxoyl dry to let me put another coat on and then its a case of putting the front In the air and starting at that end :D:wack:

Alright Tony,

Its not a difficult job to do at all but you need patience! It would also help if youve got a mate to help out with the whole lot as it just speeds everything up. If not deffinatly get someone round when your dropping the subframe out and putting it back up as thats the akward part.

You will be fine mate, good bit of experiance aswell :)

I took the same approach with the diff cooler as most others have, it was rusted to F:censored:k and wasnt doing anything so out it came. I was slightly concerned as I plan on using it most for track but I think It was Kev (SM) who said his never came on during a long workout at Brands :D

thats cool cheers mate,

i have a couple of friends willing to help so thats no probs, i recon i'll ditch the cooler and the air con when i do it.
i'm in no rush to do it as i got so much to do, as long as its done by japfest i'll be happy!

dazz150
07-11-2008, 15:32
Japfest gives you aggggggggggges to do it :D

Well I got it finished today, 2nd coat of waxoyl finished it off :) Instead of going all out on the front I decided just to put the front arms on for the time being as I new these were the worst.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0005-7.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0010-2.jpg

They were leaking all their insides out as I started and I think this may have been the reason for a slight pull to the left on motorways. Anyway nice easy job that resulted in them being in place very quickly.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0009-3.jpg

The alignment on my car Is appauling right now, I tried to keep all the arms close enough to the OE item lengths but it certainly didnt work, all for wheels are nearly pointing in different directions :wack:

dont be tempting fate now Rich! :D

Should be a bit more progress now over the next week - few more parts on order :)

dazz150
23-11-2008, 17:01
Well it was one of those days today, made good progress but that came with some anoyance

As I was inside removing the top nuts on the struts I noticed the carpet was wet, the entire driver side of the car has a pond of water! No exageration here, there must have been 1/2 an Inch! Im assuming it must be coming in from the window seals but it must be leaking from the front and rear windows as the front half of the driver side is also wet

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/000_0010-3.jpg

Anyway I got the rear coilovers on, Ive gone for a 320mm ride height on the rear - I had set the camber so bad that the driver side rear wheel was rubbing on the strut so that needed attention aswell.

The few pics I managed to take today, and the completed front lights. A poor $ > £ rate meant getting the clear lenses like Baz has was out of the question so I put the originals back on :)

30-11-2008, 16:35
Got the front coilovers fitted this weekend, didnt have a clue as to what size they should be adjusted to to give me the desired height (330mm) so on the first attempt I ended up with a higher ride height than standard:wack:

Ive got it slightly lower than the eibach lowering springs gave on the front so visually its not too different. I then moved onto the interior. I had a mate sitting inside whilst I soaked it In water and not a drop came through so Im still baffled by it. It isnt coming from the front of the car as the carpet above/around the pedals was dry.

Anyway the sound deading is almost all out now and Im supprised by how much It all ways! Im undecided on the colour to spray the interior at the moment - nice simple silver will do the trick I think. Orange is a temptation but may look silly from the exterior. Any suggestions on this matter would be great :D

Right then update time :D

So its now had the all clear on the MOT, the arches have been rolled and I got the new windscreen fitted. Thats the boring stuff out the way :wack:

To all the South Wales lads Id really recommend this mobile window fitter, Owen knows him - his worksmanship is awesome and his prices too! I think his name was Mark.

A few weeks back I took delivery from SRB, a very nice roof spoiler and finally got around to fitting it last weekend. At the same time i decided to fit my very nice (and cheap) M5 lip spoiler to the spare boot lid which I got around to swapping over today. (thanks to Vidal Babbon for letting me steal his idea:D)

The strike of Marlin blue sx's maybe :wack:

Mine was coming in through a hole in the bulkhead for wires passing through. I think that from factory they forgot to put a rubber grommet in there to stop the water trickling in amongst the wires. Filled it with silicone and that cured the portable fish bowl I had :D

3 months since an update:eek:

Ive got a week off work now so plan on getting all my jobs done In time for the Welshy gathering :D

Today saw me fitting my baffled sump, a nice straight forward job that for once went to plan quiet nicely. At the same time I changed the oil and fitted a new filter. Fingers crossed when I put the oil in tomorrow morning it wont leak :indiff:

Ive also decided to go for a bit more stance on the rear, I changed my 5mm spacer for a 20mm - results are good but at the moment picture less as to are my new JDMage wind deflectors :D

The past few months wernt spent doing nothing, front and rear Godspeed ARBs have been fitted and made a massive difference. Probably the bust modification for the cost. Thanks to Marc for my strut brace too:thumbs:

Ive also done something different with the interior that has resulted in me getting some abuse but its different from the norm, not yet finished though so pics to follow:D

even more updates :D

Made the 11 hour trip on Friday to collect a nice R33 skyline diff with a 4.1 final drive - thanks Figjam  I spent yesterday getting that fitted up, just awaiting new adjustable arms as the ones I fitted have already given up the fight! Then I can see how much difference the shorter drive will make :D

I also set about fitting my Japspeed radiator after seeing the temp gauge rise a few times which I didnt like. Awesome fitment, all the holes lined up and it seemingly slipped into place. Whilst in that area I fully removed the air con and carbon canister as neither worked anyway :D

I now have control over the electric fan with the interior air con switch which is a nice little safety feature if I need to fall back on it. I decided to leave the cowling of for the time being - not because I forgot to put it on :wack:

I havent had chance yet to find out how much difference the new final drive has made but I have learnt how a diff comes apart :D

The diff was making a little more noise than I fancied so we stripped it down to find the cause. The pinion bearing felt very rough when turning it, most deffinatly worn and likely to have been causing the noise. End cap bearings had some wear aswell, picture dont clearly show it but there was some pitting. But most importantly the crown and pinion were in good condition. So with a 200sx diff with good bearings but wrong final drive and a skyline diff with bad bearings but the right final drive we thought we put the crown and pinion into the 200's casing.

This didnt go to plan :wack:

First problem was that the bolt holes between the skyline crown and 200 crown are a different width, there is about a 1mm difference in the two and the threads are different  So I couldnt use the 200 bolts as they'd never torque up properly and the skyline ones just wouldnt fit through the diff plate (as pictured.)

We considered drilling out the diff plate to allow the bolts to fit through but the next problem was that the width of the crown on the two diffs are much thicker (ie much thicker) so either way it would need re-shimming. And after a long discussion with the workshop rebuilding it for me we've decided its probably more cost effective to replace the worn bearings on the skyline diff. :wack:

Thought id type all that out for the sake of anyone doing a search as I had the impression prior to do this that the crown and pinion was a straight swap over.

Next update will be once the bearings have arrived:thumbs:

Ok then pics of the rear and a better pic of the front to show the unique doorcards and switches :wack: (sorry about the dust) It took a few weeks to cut out the japenese comics, glue them down and finish them with a few coats of PVA followed by laquer. Gav's given me the idea to use a black pinstripe border to finish it off which I plan on doing but just not got around to it.

The back has been done for about 8months but initially planned not to put any pics and just wait for it to get spotted at shows etc but Gav got his wish :D

Car is currently off the road again at the moment :(

Mot is due next month, and once again I have a huge list of things to do :D

The first is to sort the knocking from the rear that developed very quick! We narrowed it down to the coilover and upon taking it apart we realised the dampner had only an inch of travel before locking and making the knocking noise. (video)

I have also got a new diff again to fit :wack:

A hydro handbrake is being made for me almost as I write this, things are starting to come together now :D

Now the radiator has developed a leak, strange though as its developed it just by sitting on the drive way. Last three weeks it hasnt moved, started it every week to keep things charged etc and last weekend noticed the leak.

Fairplay to Japspeed however as they are arranging for it to be exchanged under warranty, thanks guys

No major updates yet, I have no got my nismo diff which I hope to be fitting next weekend. Not many more bits to do then Im ready to get my groove on again :D

Si, I had been toying with the idea but the thought reminded to much of my younger chav'ier days when I was smoothing boots etc. :wack:

:Plug:Well cant fault apex's customer service there!:Plug: :notworthy: They sent me out a brand new HSD dampner to replace the fubar'd one!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0226.jpg

Thanks alot guys for fixing this for me, the new dampner they sent me feels 100 times better than the old! I want to take the old one apart to see what failed on it but had a look at getting into it tonight but it seems the only way to do that would be to cut it open

So with the dampner swapped over its ready to be fitted again :wack:

MOT soon

What a weekend! Got tonnes of bits done that needed doing :D

There was that much I made a list :wack:

I wont bore you with all the details but it consisted of fitting the replacement radiator japspeed sent me :notworthy only to find that none of the wholes for mounting the fan lined up :@ Que some Dazz spec bracket fabrication :D

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0228.jpg

That got the car running again after jump starting the now dead battery, that let me move onto getting my harnesses in and re-jigging the position of the bucket seat (which looks HOT :D )

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0227.jpg

The horn now works after hardwiring that beauty up and that left me time to remove the skyine diff and get my Nismo 2way fitted :D

The diff is all bolted up (4th time now, I swear im nearlly pro at fitting a diff on my own now) just need to get a few replacement bolts and then top up with oil and Im laughing :D

And while all that was off I thought id make use of having the exhaust off so gave it a bit of a polish, not up to PDH's standard but it'll do :D

The car is SO close to being back on the road now :D

Diff is on and feels tight, exhaust sounds great and doesnt leak anymore & harnesses are now adjusted up for wideboy fitment!

All that needs doing now is fitting the hydraulic handbrake and the front brake upgrade. I started the latter tonight but came to a pretty abrupt end when I found out I have a seized piston on each calliper at least, maybe two on each side at worst :(

So an unexpected job will be a calliper refurb with the aid of Si's trusty refurb thread :D That left me feeling pretty down tonight and as the work on the car has hindered my photography recently I thought it would be appropriate for a quick snapshot/whore :wack:

Tomorrow night I will get the callipers off and dis-assembled to see what condition the pistons are in and go from there. Ive got a week off work next week. It would be nice to be out enjoying the car instead of spending it all working on it still, fingers crossed!

HSD's Rich, yup hydro soon to go on. Drift days is a deffinate, fancy pod one more time?

Shit i was thinking about buying hsd's, how long have you had them?

pod one more time, you kidding?? pod loads more times :)

just getting my car up to scrathc dude.

just bought and fitted to the spare sf around the back:

apex alignment arm set
alloy diff bushes (kit)
alloy subframe bushes
poly front and rear lower arm bushes
poly hub bushes
and getting new rear wheel bearing for both hubs.
was going to order a set of hsd tt's on the weekend but not so sure now

nothing wrong with my apex ones (they were marc's old ones) one rear damper was leaking when i had them off him so i bought 2 new dampers from apex and they are good just they won;t go low enoughin the back because of the s15's turrets being slightly higher. Had the same problem with the tein's that i had on the s15 before that which came off my s14a

dazz150
17-03-2010, 20:29
Now thats a list Richy  :D

The HSD's were about a year old I think and had done approx 7k miles, it wasnt the top mount failing but the damper rod itself  But fairplay to Apex who got it sorted with the help of driftworks from what I understand

As for Pod, its a blooming long trip up there. I plan on going up there one more time to get used to this diff in an open space then do the pembrey event every month - that should keep me going nicely :D

dazz150
17-03-2010, 21:12
Started with the callipers tonight and dare I say so far its been pretty straight forward :D

This is largly thanks to Si's fool proof guide. I went with the technique of putting wood in the caliper whilst it was still on the car and pressing the brake pedal to push the pistons the majority of the way out. This worked for all the loose ones but the seized ones wouldnt budge.

This is the way I got them off the car, you can clearly see the seized one
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0233.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0234.jpg

The boots came off easy, I went with technique of using a blunt screw driver to leaver them out and then finished them off with taping the screw driver with a hammer.

Got them all out In under an hour this way, quick bit of fine wet and dry brought up all the pistons nicely except for two. In the following picture is one in good condition and one with slight corrosion and pitting. I will be replacing this one, another however has a single pit of corrosion the size of a pin prick. I also think I will replace this one to be safe

Quick update tonight, brake fluid fountains are no fun! :annoyed:

Used Si's tip to fill the pot with fluid before pushing the pistons home but I forgot to put the bleed valve back in when doing the last piston. Result was a jet of brake fluid shooting 4 foot into the air narrowly missing the plum doing the work

All thats left now is a lick of final paint and do the nissan writing tomorrow then its time to refit them then off to get the hydro in :D

Im not very happy with the initial finish I had with this high temp black paint so I will give it a final coat of hammerite black to give it a bit of shine :)

What a mug, I spoke to soon again :wack:

All my hard work painting the callipers went down the pan and will need re-doing again! Fitting the callipers onto the new disks was a complete PITA! I lost count how many times I took the callipers off and back on again, to cut a long story short they would fit but the disk was fouling on several areas of the calliper.

Anyway after a bit of tampering and lots of swearing it all seemed to fit, then came the fun of mounting the braided lines. One side mounted onto the coilover bracket nicely but the other again decided to play up. After deciding stretching it onto the bracket wasnt a good idea Dazz's handwork came out and made a seconday (aka bodge) bracket up :D

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0248.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0250.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0251.jpg

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/darrenaitkin/Photo0249.jpg

So that has left me at the stage of needing to give it a quick and not perfect bleed to get it to the garage to fit the hydro & replace corroded rear lines before a full system bleed. Hopefully it will be ready this afternoon to head over there

Also found abit of rubbage under the front passanger arch, I think it was from previous so I will see if it rubs the new paint off before giving it the hammer treatment :D

I havent had a proper chance to test them yet :( But going from how stiff they were coming out compaired to how smooth they were going back in the difference should be night and day

Bit of good and bad news today, was hoping to get the car in for the new break lines and the hydro hand brake this week but they are flat out with prepping rally cars for an event this weekend

Had an awesome day today that I wasnt really expecting to happen so soon

Got a phone call from Marc mid week to say that my new dash was ready and he could come and deliver it at the end of the week. He turned up this morning on the door step with a HOT freshly flocked dash for me :D :D

After awaiting the rain to pass we set about removing the old dash and refitting the new one. Looking back at it id say it wasnt too bad removing the old dash, a few pieces of plastic got snapped by my heavy handedness but cant complain what with a replacement available.

Anyway less talk more pics, im over the moon how its transformed my interior from a pretty crazy combination of random parts to something that looks like an interior that has been planned out. Just waiting for the door cards and a few other pieces to be completed and we should be onto a winner :D

Ok seriously here are the pics :wack:

Went to test fit the handbrake tonight, took a bit of time to get the feel right but think we finally decided on a position that would a) be comfortable for me and b) not obstruct the passanger seat.

Its got just enough angle towards the driver seat to make the pull smooth but not too much for it to foul on the dildo knob :wack:

Picture as it stands now, tomorrow the box its mounted on should be welded up nicely :)

Well I suppose its entirely down to which one you bought and the position you want it to fit. You can mount it anyway you want given that its essentially a custom part.

I trimmed the ends so they curved with the boot lines a bit better and made some score marks on the underside of it to allow it to bend better and used a skim of filler to cover up the marks.

Its not just a case of glueing it on mate.

MOT booked for Friday :D

Rear brake lines have been completly ripped out and bought inboard to make fitting the hydro a bit easier. The wand is all fab'd up and fitted and feels great, looks tite too :wack: We decided to fit new disks and pads on the rear as my ones were pretty nakered. Ive got some pics but wont bother putting them up yet as its just the wand that looks different.

All fingers crossed Pembrey this weekend will be its first outing :D

The owner (and rally driver) took me for a spin in it tonight, he made my car do things that I didnt know it could :D

I drove the same road again afterwards in my daily driver just to laugh and the black marks left all over our welsh back lanes :wack:

You all set for pembrey now then mate?

i'm still confused on that pic of the wand, the cylinder is on the wrong side. With mine i have to pull the hydro to me to lock the wheels. The way round you have yours you'd have to push the lever?

Awesome days drifting yesterday at Pembrey. It was my second time, first if you wernt to count the day at DWYB in the play pens. Really happy with my progress and very happy with the car :D

The hydraulic handbrake is just epic, I can pull on it with 2 fingers if needed and only needs to travel 2inches to lock the rear wheels. This is also with standard rear brakes so Im very happy!

2nd review is the Nismo diff, completly different experience to that of the time at DWYB with the viscous diff. Before it took alot of effort to get the car sideways, now I dont even need to be on boost and It will come around. Lovely :D

Car picked up a few niggles that will need sorting. Front ride height caused a problem, I rubbed through the loom in the arch :wack: It was also the culprit for pulling out my front arches and shredding the front tyres. Option is to flare the arch or to raise the height.

Anyone got an arch roller? :D
