View Full Version : Ps3 Play Tv
Anyone else bother with this?
Mine turned up yesterday so I set it up last night :D
It's amazing :D
I can now use remote play on my PSP to watch TV anywhere in the world (so long as there's a WiFi point) :D
If I want to record a programme I can do that remotely too :D

I wish I had decent freeview coverage :(

Do you have to leave the PS3 turned on when you set something up to be recorded?
Looks rather cool

I'm quite sure the PS3 only has to be on standby, i have read somewhere the PSP can turn on the PS3 remotely anyway....or maybe this was something that'll be available to do in a future update?!?!
Yeah the PSP can turn it on. You need to set it up tho.
Got it yesterday too, when you have set it to record it will wake up the PS3 and then turn it off again afterwards it will also record whilst playing games

im pretty impressed sofar! the guide is very pretty and lots quicker than my old box :) the picture is good and setup was less than painless! awesome!

Ah crap, looks like i'll have to buy a ps3 now then
Inputs, as said its basically a freeview PVR so only has an ariel input ;)
Its in need of an update, found a few bugs already, firstly when I have rewound TV whilst recording another channel, after going back to live TV it wouldnt let me get rid of the menu, and then when I changed channel, upon change they were all paused, leaving me again with the menu problem :wack:
I think its brilliant though, already set it to record two things whilst Im away :D
Home cinema will be complete att he weekend with the arrival of my Onkyo amp :smitten: :D
What I can't believe is that fact that it fires up even if it's off :D
I thought I was going to have to leave the PS3 on to get it to record stuff

This is the bit thats getting me hooked. I love the fact I can browse my media server from the PSP and watch films show friends/family photos. To be able to record and watch TV too - bloody mavelous:nod::notworthy
Grand plans shot though my head about custom installing PSP's into the bathroom - to have TV/films viewable from the bath/whilst in the shower etc... But digital TV is just not worth it (in my TV opinion)

Not quite (Although I don't think i've quite got up to speed with your thinking...)
The PSP can, via WiFi, emulate the PS3 - in that you literally see the 'PS3' screen on your PSP - from the PSP you can browse the internet, access photos/films/music that your PS3 has access too.
Infact... just going to have a look. I remeber you could set the output device i.e PSP or PS3 - in which case you could use the PS3 as a media player without a TV and instead, having the PS3 display on your PSP 'remote' - As I guess if you can see the TV - theres no point using the PSP - may as well stick with a £30 PS3 controller:wack: - but music control - a possiblity - i'll check it out.
Edit: Checked it out - its ouly Audio output - which you can switch between the PSP and the PS3 - for which I presume you can plug a HiFi directly into the PS3 and with multiple PS3's (i.e one for each room) and a PSP as a remote, control a multi-room music system. However, there are better alternatives out there...

But you'd then only have one source - so you wouldn't be able to have different music in different rooms (Maybe not an issue for you).

No, just a means of controlling the PS3, as the other remotes can be used in other rooms with senders etc

UPDATE TIME !!!!!!
Those that bought playTV, how has it been ???
I dont watch that much TV average 1 -2 hours a day max over an entire week, I suppose there is something on about once a week maybe 2 that I feel the need to record, otherwise it just get watched. I only have Freeview, I have no intention of buying a subscription to watch TV. .. so thats where I am at.
How useable as a day to day product is playTV ? does it work, is it reliable, can the PS3 cope with being on everyday ?
Advice please, currenly I have a sh1t TV and a £24 freview decoder box. Next year I will invest a ig LCD, but will be sticking with freeview
Absolutely fantastic chap
It's not actually "ON" all day, it boots up when it needs to record something and then shuts down again
I don't watch much TV either but Play TV has been excellent and I'm now using it instead of my other Freeview tuner
It's just had an update to improve the TV guide as well
The only downside is the time it takes to load (like a game) so it's not just a case of turn on the TV and there's Freeview :(
Does it store to the ps3 hard drive or the play tv box?
It stores to the Ps3 box
My idea was to use it as a daily freeveiw viewer.
How long and hard is it to load up ? .... more thinking of the girlfriend here, will she be able to come along, pick up a remote, press a button and wait ? ... or will she need to go through menus, get stressed and wait for me to help ?
It's an option off the bar like music/videos ect
Takes about 30 seconds if that to boot I suppose
hmmmm, I wonder If I could get a splitter, send one input to the Ps3 and another to the freeview decoder in the TV and let her use the TV ?

Its only £59 on amazon as well too.. :)
I have my finger over the order button as we speak ...... just not sure the GF will be too happy at having to go through menus just to watch TV
Can you not just buy a regular freeview dual tuner PVR set top box. I am sure that these have come down in price quite a lot lately. No boot-up time issues.

I could do .... I just dont really find big black plastic boxes attractive, so if I can get away with less clutter all the better. A games console, PVR, DVD player, Amp, PC, TV, cables and more cables ARGH !
The PS3 has the ability to make 4 boxes 1 and I like that.
I think the way to go for me is make sure the TV I buy has a built in freeview tuner, so the GF uses that unless we find something worth recording. then let the PS3 do its bit.

Whether its worth watching is dependant on how much crap you like to watch ..... The way I look at it is ... is there really anything extra on Sky and Virgin that warrants 30 quid a month !
The only downside to freeview is its not broadcast in HD ... how much of Sky and virgin is ?
does it update itself automatically? mine seems to say update available most of the time, but i cannae find any way of manually updating?

You have to go into settings and then one of the options (can't think which one at the moment might be "about") and it's there

Ok, so:
Q. Is the PlayTV HD compatible?
Yes - the PlayTV has dual HD DVB-T tuners which in theory will allow HD content to be viewed and saved. However, at the time of writing there are no FreeView channels in the UK which are broadcast in this format.
Q. Can I hook up my FreeSat HD box with the PS3 PlayTV?
Unfortunately not - FreeSat broadcasts in a different format, DVD-S, which the PlayTV does not currently support. It is unclear whether the PlayTV will be able to support additional formats such as DVB-S and DVB-T2 via future software or firmware upgrades.
Still going to wait till it can do Freesat HD I think...
The latest update seems to do more than it says.....My picture quality has got much better!
I use mine everyday as a normal telly tuner as I don't have a freeview box. PS3 seems fine being left on the whole time.
Yay another update
Goody.
Been impressed with it so far ...... the only issue I have is the sodding thing wont record Virgin 1 :wack:
Its the only channel it wont do .... I just get garbled rubbish .. I put it down to a weak signal ... but then you would expect at least 4 other channels to have the same problem .. unless virgin in MUXed with the shopping channels so I'll never find out why ?

So, anyone tried it yet? Will it stop Top Gear on Dave looking like you're watching it through a sieve?
So, anyone tried it yet? Will it stop Top Gear on Dave looking like you're watching it through a sieve?
errrr ..... well I updated it .... cant say I can tell any difference in picture quality than the normal TV signal I get :wack:
This could be due to 2 things though
(1) My TV also upscales ?
(2) I dont use it much, only if I want to record something, of which isnt often so I cant remember what the picture looked like before
(3) Its sh1t
Dave looks ok on it though .... mind you Dave looks ok on my tv as well, so I guess option 1
Another update this week.....
But although it says there was an upgrade in the SD picture quality, mine seems to have got worse, particularly on very busy scenes - the background seems to get more blocky than before.
I was really happy with the picture quality before, some of the previous updates made it fantastic.
Anyone else noticed any new picture quality issues?
mmm will check later not been about over the weekend to do the update
i'll check tonight, i didnt know an update was avaliable,
i have been well happy with the picture quality for the last few months on all channels, its my primary means to watch and record freeview. i have a 11 year old sony WEGA
screen though
have you done a retune? they have changed the signal bandwidth a couple of times in the last month for some of the channels and that "may" have an impact on signal quality/strength
as always I am holding off updating until other people have proved the usefulness of it :D

pretty much yes ... although it wont be as versatile as the PC it does everything in a small quiet useful box, complete with bluetooth control so you dont even need it on display.
With mine, I use it to watch blue rays / dvds, play all my music collection, play slide shows of all my photos (at the same time listening to music). Watch iplayer, watch recorded TV, play games.
never downloaded or streamed movies to it though, so I cant comment on that.
Its a one box solution that requires no real configuration ... Even the Girlfriend can use it

I've been happy with the picture too until now. It's strange as sometimes it can look as sharp as before, but then sometimes the blockiness returns in backgrounds and around sharp edges. I'm watching on a panasonic 42" 1080p plasma so I may be more susceptible to noticing picture issues.
I did the freeview retune when it was due, and a few channels moved about, but didn't notice much of a change then.
BBC channels normally have the best picture, and Film4 looked great too last night, but for some reason the tv tuned it self to watch X-factor last night :wack: and on the fast moving shots of the contestants the backgrounds just broke up.
I haven't tried the TV's inbuilt tuner yet, will give that a go.

Erm....the girlfriend watched it.
I was outside with an axe chopping down trees, one handed. Grrrr!
on a screen that large you will notice pixelation on freeview SD
i remember hearing that 32" is the optimum size for freeview SD as a steam to accomodate larger would take alot more bandwidth
Mike i do watch downloaded video (downloaded Via PC) on my PS3, streaming is good quality, but i have not found a stable media centre that wont close the connection after X mins, so i copy all my downloaded video over to the PS3 (takes about 20mins per GB) and quality is fine, it automatically stores the content in the video channel for playback, the only thing i dont like (but i havnt looked to change it) is that it store the vids in folders that are based on month, so if i copy 3 videos in setpember it has a september folder, then 3 in october it will have an october folder as well.
personally i would preffer it choose to have it where i can move the content to folders of the same series.
one thing i am finding though is now i've downloaded some games, i have some videos i've downloaded on my PC, ive recorded a bit of content from freeview and when the video channel goes live next month my 80gb HDD is running close to capacity, so im upgrading to a 500gb drive next week (about £50-60) to accomodate. i would recomend this upgrade if wanting t use it primarily as a media box

I would also agree that its a very versatile box, i bought mine originally for the Bluray, and gaming of coarse, but soon after a bought an HD camcorder.
I soon found that my laptop wasn't very good at HD, but the PS3 not only could stream it from a laptop/computer remotely via wifi or cable, but it could store and process my HD movies on its own and an external HD, and do it well, so i am quite impressed with the whole PS3 package.

PS3 for MP3 playback with funky visuals, Amp for MP3 playback for highest quality (PS3 cant buffer for toffee), Popcorn for all video :)

there are media server software (i have 2 on my PC) that does it automatically when streaming and when copying, the 2 i have were the first 2 that came up in google and are both free. its convertered all the different types of video i've thrown at it

I use PS3 Media Server. I cannot fault it. It is platform independent (runs on Java) so in my experience works well on Windows and Linux. It also does on-the-fly transcoding, so if you got a ripped 1080p film it will play that, in the matroska format (.mkv).
I keep the server running all night, since I watch House MD and stuff in bed with the mrs. The streaming is brilliant, I get a little stuttering sometimes on Full HD (1080p) stuff but thats my wireless router gaying it up. When I had the PS3 wired it was perfect.
Like you I have gone through many different programs, I used Winamp for a while, then TVersity, and mediatomb. PS3 MEdia Server is brilliant though.

I use Tversity and PS3 media streamer and they both work very well at converting video formats on the fly, i was going to buy a dedicated media sever until i discovered just what the PS3 and a good bit of software can do:thumbs:
im not sure what i have, i did use TVersity but it wouldnt find the PS3 often, and would drop out half way through copying.
the other media server is better but not 100%
would i need a cross over cable to go direct from PC to PS3 or do i have ot go thorugh a router?

LAN cable straight from router is one way, or just connect a large HD direct to the PS3, but make sure its formatted to FAT32.

Get both your computer and PS3 on the network (assuming your video files are on yoru computer) fire up PS3 Media Server, and add the folders you wanna share on the network for the PS3. Thats it, the PS3 will find your server and connect, whether wireless or wired.
As mentioned, on wireless the Full HD films can stutter a bit, but its barable,.
