I think i might be getting old. You had to shout to be heard in my old escort with the zorst being so intrusive, rode in my first 200(s13) on saturday and i couldn't believe how quiet it was inside, scary thing is, I liked the silence, what does it sound like inside when you put an aftermarket zorst on?

cheers

Ive got a mongoose and that makes the 200 sound like the performance car it is. Nice rumble when pottering along, howls like a banshee when floored.:D :D :D
Wouldn't have it any other way.

I have a HKS Hiper Muffler with a 3" front pipe, yes its loud but you get used to it, it can get annoying at 3000rpm on the motorway because it seems to resonate a bit.

Blitz NUR Spec R with bung removed - Nearest thing that I've heard to it is Jimmy McRaes Group A Sierra Cosworth ;)

I had a Hiper Muffler (now with Chimp) on my grey S13. I also had the rear seats and all the carpet removed. It did make a drone in the cabin, annoying to probably 90% of people if you use it for motorway travel. A bung would be a good investment.

Hyper mufflers are quite quiet untill they warm up, i find with mine once its warm, it's got that kidney vibrating low grawling sound, did my fist m#way journey with her on yesterday, not too bad once you get used to it, not as loud as the blitz i dont think, but i dodnt want one thats too loud.

Bit of sound proofing may not go astray, if i want full effect i can open the windows, ooooo, just in time for summer.........mmmmmmm shiney thing :D:D

was thinking of the nur spec (whoa, calm down, you dont even have a 200 yet :D ) Somebody on here said that he's the most popular guy in the street when he gets up at 6 in the morning:D :D

how much do the nur spec and mongoose systems cost from the turbo back,(WANT FLAMES, NEED FLAMES!!!!!) I might have to budget for one in my car price
 :D

I've got a Tubetorque wake-the-dead job.

I don't like loud exhausts but, after 2 years, it's sort of growing on me.

Tunnels.........YES!!! :D

As far as i know, and shoot me down in flames here if i'm wrong, but mong's are turbo back, and about £300, where as most others like my hyper muffler and the blitz nur are cat back and about £500, so you'd need a decat, unless you got an s13 which i believe dont have cats anyway-lucky barstuards.

I think.........:D

moondog
07-04-2003, 13:27
do they not have cats, I thought they had them as standard but you didn't need them for the MOT

symbol
07-04-2003, 13:29
My s13 has no cat :D but it is a "f" reg. s13's on the reg of j onwards have cat's :p ( i think ) i know "k" reg has.

SMiFFAD
07-04-2003, 13:29
Again i could be wrong, but older S13's dont av em, think newer ones did, S14's have one big one and S14a's like mine have two

If your car is fitted with one as standard it needs it for mot's, although apparently S14a's get away with just the biggun back in.

blitz nur spec r sounds better (the name that is) ;) :p :D

on a different note, my boss at work says that putting an exhaust on a turbocharged car is not a good idea because it changes back pressure and that is not good for the turbo. What does everyone think, I dont see how reducing the back pressure would do any harm but I have no experience or knowledge about this

He is talking out of his arse
Putting a bigger Zorst on will mean the gases are expelled quicker, meaning:
Freer, smoother running :)
Faster spool up :)
Improved fuel consumption :)
Occasional flames :D

All good things, plus the fact it sounds more like a sportscar, less like an overgrown hairdryer

moondog
07-04-2003, 14:58
cheers mate, i thought that was the case, just that generally he seems to be in the know about cars but obviously not on this occasion. I won't mention it to him though because even though he is wrong he's still right:rolleyes: , if you know what i mean.

Only occasional flames  , thats no good, how do you get frequent flames, I wanna torch/melt the scrabble brigades stick on, airfix painted, plastic bumpers:D :D :D

Seeing as your reason for flames is so valid, Ill tell ya ;) :D
Pretty much goes with a big ole fat pipe, uprated fuel pump, and lightly tapping the throttle while on run off in 4th. I think matt_j was decided the master at this - theres an old post of his telling you exactly how to do it somewhere ............
Unfortunately, the downside is it may make you look and act like a big ape, which matt_j is also the master at ;) :D

Excuse me for being so thick, but what is run off, is it when you take your foot off the accelerator while leaving the car in gear:confused:  :o :o

Martin T
07-04-2003, 20:22
Run off is the same as over run IIRC which is when The engine's revving with little or no throttle (i.e. the engine's braking) so if like you said its in gear on no throttle.:)

On a turbocharged car you want the exhaust to be as unrestictive as it can be, but that does mean going up in DB's, i run a custom pipe, totally unsilenced, measured at around 115db's at TSC2 (well not mine but exactly the same system on an identical car) and yes my neighbours hate me especially when i get called out in the early hours of the morning, but hey, they've got screaming kids :D

I know i'm going to be flamed here but I think the NUR spec sounds terrible compared to the HKS, its too boomy and has a metallic rasp to it, its reminisent of hearing an XR2/3i with fooked baffles in the exhaust, I think its because its stainless and its changes the sound compared to mild steel, but saying that Mongoose exhausts sound much better than NUR specs.

Sorry if I offended anyone but thats only my opinion. :)

Dump valves help with flames IIRC, they dump excess air which isnt accounted for my the AFM so the mixture is richer and more unburnt fuel makes it through the tubes.

Mine's a Nur Spec copy and it's the best thing i've ever baught! I work night's and the nagbours hate me now but they never mow the lawn til i'm up :)
It is loud in the car but you get used to it. Tunnel's are sooooooooooooo good, went to heathrow the other day and stopped in the tunnel just so I could cain it :D

To go against the grain here i'm afraid your boss can be right here, from personal experience here and if you do a search on the board you will find many examples of problems with fitting free flow exhausts. The problems occur mainly with high milage 200's i've heard of quite a few s13's and a handfull of s14's including mine which experienced a very fcuking nasty surprise shortly after fitting their spanking new jap pipe without the cats in!
It goes a little something like this so I have been led to believe: the valves and seals on the turbo have been used to opening and shutting with the aid of backpressure from the standard exhaust system which nissan built in that way for a purpose, the moment you bang a 3" straight through system on the back pressure is next to nothing, therefore if you have a weakish tubby the valves sometimes fail to seat which means oil/ the mixture gets through producing in my case a very trick 007 style no-one can now see anything smokescreen, which was nice!!!

Look i dont believe for one minute that i am a mechanic so anyone who knows the score set me straight but this is the sort of thing i have learnt with 200 ownership:rolleyes: ;)

08-04-2003, 12:35
This is something that affects a lot of cars, and not just 200's. Once that nice shiney LARGE exhaust is on, turbo's have been found to die within 2000 miles. So if you car is a bit of a dog, be prepared.

Owen
08-04-2003, 12:48
Yer sorry, didnt mean to direct it towards the old 2***** but it is definately problems with high milers, but it dont have to be a dog mine had 60k on her mint condition service the fcuking lot but she just wasnt mad for the new pipe, perhaps when she was born she always fancied a hybrid:D :D :D :D :D

Don't know about anybody else, but what about the noises you get after you fit yr exhaust ie rattles

08-04-2003, 13:20
More pressing problems, i cant go to my local sainsburys anymore cos there is a speed bump that the backbox/post cat pipe joint scrapes over......sounds realy bad......but i'ttle wear downa bit, just need to hit it in the same place every time! - or jump it :D

moondog
08-04-2003, 13:22
there's a very simple solution to that, take the cat off;) :p

ent the cat that scraping......tis the joint between the back box and the rest of the pipe, tis now the lowest point on the car and just infront of the back wheels

Althoug, main cat is to be removed hopefully this week.....just need to prod dano with a big stick........:D

Owen
08-04-2003, 17:33
Yes the fitment on the Hyper is shite the designer needs a fcuking kicking whatever did he think he was playing at putting the flange on the lowest most vunerable place under the car, I'm gonna have to have it sorted because i want to deck the car and it scrapes on a flat road when i go flat out on the 1st to 2nd gearchange! To anyone thinking about buying the pipe come and see mine first its shite, and know pretty wrecked and no i dont hammer it over speed bumps because frankly i usually cant get over them:mad:

SMiFFAD
08-04-2003, 19:04
I've only got a problem cos mines lowered, be fine on a standard car.......found a solution, go across them at an angle, looks daft but works! :D

Owen
09-04-2003, 09:28
Trust me it wasnt fine when the car was at standard ride height, now its even worse  :D

I will try the diagonal tactic though if you seem to have practiced it, fair play yours looks nice in the old red, with the grafix on the skirts i chose to bosh them down the door but will take them off when i get back home have the Max Power look about them!

SMiFFAD
09-04-2003, 09:32
was looking at putting them down the doors, but think they look a bit more subtle along the skirts...... makes it less boring too.

Have to say that SE's exhaust (Preparing to be flamed) was one of the nicer sounding exhausts I have heard - sounded like Tommi Makinnen's EVO whan on full chat. They just didn't look the part. :(

My NUR was the loudest exhaust I've had the pleasure to hear ;)

For some reason it was noticably louder than any other 200SX I'd heard one with, even Barry Cs, and Stuy's old S13.

Did give me the occasional headache though, but.. you live with these decisions :D
