Hi All, Starting my own little RB project after reading soo many on here and other forums, having owned two rovers as my first two cars I moved over to Nissan with my first 200sx S13, I saw about 300bhp with it and it was the best car i had owned and fell in love with the shape. I then found a new job and a company van. Having the van I was boared of not having a car to blast about in. This started my Kawasaki ZX9 Engined Locost 7 project which went great and was amazingly quick off the mark. After the summer (what we had of it anyway) this went up for sale making me a nice profit too, moving to something with a roof I went back to rover with another 214. This time I went the full works stripping the car to a shell and rebuilding it from the ground up with a 2.0ltr turbo T16 engine, full cage and rally prep, with rally and track being the ultimate intention. I still have the car which I have put so much time and money into, it really does handly like nothing else on the road and with about 260bhp is pretty quick. £4k for sale please.

Which has brought me full circle back to the S13, I have always yearned for another one and the thought of a RB converted tidy road going black one sounded great. Something a bit more practical, that can be driven like a car and not a pure rally machine. I picked this one up for a mere £1000, automatic, with only 60k miles on it, full nissan service history, some tidy wheels, exhaust and tints. bargain, it really is immaculate and in black looks superb. Its going to be kept looking stock with the addition of some GTR's or similar wheels and big brakes. Here are some pictures before the project was underway, about a month ago:

First thing to do was remove the old boring stuff that I dont need, like the Ca18det  , standard suspension, gearbox and intercooler. Car now lies on apex performance coilovers at the rear, top bits of kit by the looks of things. Not much rust at all anywhere on the car.

Here are some pictures of the RB, 50k miles out of a very tidy standard import R33 front damaged, got the engine from skylinepart, japan imports think there the same company, the guy Anthony runs in the JDM all stars, top fella, sorted me out everything I need for £1500. Couldnt complain as he is on my doorstep and offered a guarentee and any further parts if i have any problems. Compression test was done and came back spot on. His car is below, its a RB26.

Little update, I been pondering over the wiring all day, managed to free the looms from the engine / s13 chassis and start to clear the engine bay.

Also cleaned up the RB, painted the spark plug cover, polished the plenum, intake pipework, painted the heatshields in high temp paint, drilled the holes just for aesthetics - and gave it a general clean up, what a sexy engine. I am going for a factory look with this using black silicone hoses for the FMIC pipework. I decided to keep the gold coated cam covers, had them off to paint but changed my mind in the end. Looks subtly and very clean.

Started to clean up the engine bay also in the dark, not very exciting but its a start, primed it in zinc primer (didnt have any hamerite and this was free from work). I am going to do it all satin black to finish.

Got a decent finish from work today so made the most of it and started on the engine bay. This is using hammerite rust remover, paint it on and it goes from blue to black removing the rust. I’m pretty impressed to be honest. Also sprayed ludicrous amounts of engine degreaser to the engine bay and surrounding areas, going to sand and spray her up tomorrow hopefully. Satin Black.

Out of curiousity, why did you sell the locost? I've allways wanted to own a Seven style car.

Cheers for the nice comments all, I just used cans to spray it, satin black is very easy to get looking good, I aint expecting it to last forever but if it gets dirty you canalways just spray back over the top, lol. I love the stuff.
I sold the Locost because I wasnt very happy with the diff ratio at the time, it would limit at 105mph at 14k RMP with 6 gears. It got there in about 10secs mind. Was hitting a 0-60 time of about 4sec. Great fun but i decided to go to something with a roof, you have much more confidence when your enclosed.
Cheers

Another little update, just boring stuff at the moment really, made some further prep in the engine bay pre engine. I had a couple of small holes to the nearside chassis and passenger footwell so welded these up.

Bashed in the baulkhead slightly at the transmission tunnel, its an Automatic so possible didnt need to do this but might as well not risk it. Also cut of the ABS support bar and welded that back on giving clearance for the RB (as shown with the little red arrow).

Took advantage of the dry weather today (for a change).
Collected a clutch master cylinder and pedal assembly from 'BUCKIE', cheers bud
Croped the automagic oversized brake pedal, marked (punched from inside) and drilled the baulkhead. Drilled with the aid of a hole saw and fitted, averything lines up and everything is there for the pedal assembly, Top stuff. Some nice NISMO pedals to come.

Mated up the S13 steering rack to the R33 subframe, the larger R33 pipe (to the tank) can be used it just slips onto the hose where the S13 one was. The feed to the PAS pump was a bit trickier, carefull shaping with my bare hands, thumbs pressing, (get me) taking care not to crease it. After a bit of time it was to a decent enough shape, re-fitted the retaining clamps and cable tied the rest just to make sure, its now fitted back onto the RB ready for the gearbox and heater matrix hoses to go on.

Got a spare 5 mins over my lunch break today so I sanded down the gearbox with a wire brush, also used a drill and wire head attachment. I then washed the lot down with white spirt and blew off any alloy dust. I used a metalic high temp silver paint for the box, came up superb, looks like polished alloy.

Right then, made some good progress today.
1st up went to pick up my mocal oil cooler from the interlink depot. DRIFTWORKS supplied the kit which woks on a thermostatic sandwich plate only allowing oil to be diverted at full temp, its a 19row cooler. Looks great and the service from Phil is the best I have ever received. Very helpful and superb next day delivery - they even chucked in a wham bar which gave me some energy for the day. Cant recommend them enough. Here are some pics of the hoses and sandwich plate fitted to the RB.

Next up I called in at plum base to get these copper reducers, 22mm to 15mm. These combined with the s13 hoses and skyline hoses fitted to give feed to the heater matrix, I have heard of people using a pug diesel hose but I had loads of hose lying around and managed to knock something up. These were £3.

Right, time to maneuver the engine in place, not easy by yourself! Lifted the car up 1m off the floor to give clearance for pushing the engine complete under the bay. Using an old trolley I had, the rear was completely bottomed out. Tied the hubs up out of the way with sonme rope.

Next lowered the car down a little and lifted the engine into place, sounds easy but took a good few hours, had to remove the front chassis mounting points / bracing beam. Gearbox lined up into place, will cut n shut the mount tomorrow, and the R33 sub frame slid into place, better fit than the s13 one.. Time to start plumbing things in and somehow sort the wiring.

Just bought this also, its made for a R33 GTS-T so shouldnt be to hard to make fit, huge and its nearly 4" thick. Paid £120 for the kit collected, was from a local lad on e-bay. Think im going to use new hoses, black samco's to keep a stock looking theme going.

Damn you, its coming on quicker than mine :wack:
Looking good bud, glad u got the thing in there anyway, will have to watch for some hinters when i attempt mine this weekend :) Oh and for the wiring, nize or buffy can do it off here, mine was done by nize :)

Managed to get some more done today. Firstly bundled all my wiring up and box'd it up for posting, it's going to someone with a bit of wiring talent, buffy to be precise.
http://photos-062.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-snc1/v343/143/71/849450062/n849450062_4533853_2157.jpg
I modified the gearbox mount for fitting, basically involves extending the mount aprox 50mm and re-drilling. I used some 4mm plate I had lying around.
http://photos-062.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-snc1/v343/143/71/849450062/n849450062_4533847_301.jpg

Also modified the radiator mountings, removing the viscous fan mounting points. This was then fitted and the upper and lower hoses atached, I used a combination of CA18 / RB hoses to get the fit, modified CA upper and standard unmodified RB lower. The radiator had take offs for cooling the auto box, these were blocked with a couple tight fitting deep thred screws.

I had a twin fan setup from my MGZR project lying around, I fitted a slim fan when I got the hooge intercoller so this proved excelent for the Nissan. Its from a rover coupe turbo, I shortened the mounting frame by a couple inch and re-welded, also cut of the rubber lugs of the base and the mounting points from the top, it fits so snug its unreal, the front bracing and locking mech even fits unmodified.
http://photos-062.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-snc1/v343/143/71/849450062/n849450062_4533846_9969.jpg

Finally played around with the intercooler hoses, thing I can manage to get one side complete with only the offside needing another pipe made up. Hopefully it sits lower then the RB Streeto project car, so that it clears the bonnet.

Thats all for now folks, need to get the prob made up. Dnt know of anywhere local? Did all this today with conjunctivitus, my left eye is completely fooked. Probs not the best idea to go welding etc but it took my mind of it at least + it beats watching the snooker.

Couple more things, replaced the Right bottom wishbone as the balljoint was shot, also cleaned up my 2nd hand Apex Coilovers, they now look NEW!
All suspension is now fitted apart from the anti roll bar which I still need to have a look at, going to try and space it down to clear the sump if possible, has anyone got a nearside drop link for sale, as mine snapped when i took it off?
Also fitted the hoses for the heater matrix, had to drop the gearbox back out because it had got trapped between the engine and bulkhead, see its not all straight forward. Heres are a few pics and another showing the fans with the front bracing back on, over the moon with the fit of this. As if it was made to be there.

Yeah think your right, thinking of going GTR Brembo's
see how much they are going for but i would advise something like the willwood conversion that DB power sell, very very good value for money.
great thread by the way, really coming together now, glad to see another s13 with the engine that it was meant to have

Just got a PM from buffy' and the wiring is on its way back to me, unbelievably quick job, top service!, need to really pull my finger out now and could have it going in a week or so.
Shame I missed the DB group buy on the wilwood kits, used wilwood on my kit car and they worked a treat, at £500 I would have been very tempted too. I am going to get it on the road first mind, then when the weather starts to get better next year I will be going big brakes and full adjustable alingment all round.

Rite thn, got some progress done this weekend, got the loom back, its spot on everything labeled up ready to go since im a numpty , cheers again Buffy. Started to fit the FMIC, I used a bit of 30x30 RSA I had lying around, its already gavlanised so should out last the car, lol. Sat this above the front crash bar mounts and bolted it on, cooler slid up behind after cutting some of the underside away. Also fitted my Mocal oil cooler to the front crash bar, this was done by cutting the two holes out using the viscious drill bit in the pic below, 4 holes mounted the cooler as sturdy as hell. The FMIC also bolted up nice and tight, no chance of either moving.

I could now start to position hoses for the cooler, right side fits up nicely with the standard Skyline WMIC hose and the aftermarket piece, left side might be a bit harder, need some more time on it.
Also got my prop off the car, measured up and sent to the Prop Clinic in Bradford, hopefully get this back by next weekend.

Why is the oilcooler in front of the ic?
It's a good way of pumping heat into your FMIC.
Ian200sx
27-10-2008, 19:15
Room and the convenience of mounting it on the crash bar, surly it wont effect it that much, as air will be passing through at some speed? Or will it? It's mounted 1" from the face of the FMIC.
Paul_S13
27-10-2008, 19:20
They don't flow a huge amount through them and they get furkin hot, it only looks an inch away tops, it also covers a 3rd of the frontal area of the FMIC.
99.9% I have seen are behind the FMIC as the air flow though the fmic is greater than the oil cooler and as they are behind the fmic they are not affected by the radiant heat and heated air from the oil cooler as much.
Ian200sx
27-10-2008, 19:38
Yeah I see your point as very valid m8 but its much easier to mount it up front like that, there is no room behind. The oil is going to be about 70oc maybe by the time it reaches the front? What temp is air going into the intercooler going to be at from the tubby?
Has anyone mounted these down by the fog lights with any luck?
mount the oil cooler underneath the battery by chance and use a smaller washer bottle. will keep the heat away from the intercooler and you could vent the bumper as like the passenger side for a wing mount?
just a thought really :)

Hey All,
Took the correct route and re-positioned the oil cooler behind the FMIC, made up a galvanized bracket and hung to over the back. Filled it with oil first so that filling the engine the correct level should be easier. The putty type stuff you see is to stop it bashing of the FMIC, its heat resistant. Also fitted the Revotec fan controller and wired it up. Exhaust was next, the standard s13 cat fits the skyline downpipe superb, all fits really to easy. Need to put a bracket on tho to take the strain of the dopwnpipe. Just using exhaust paste for now, once its got an MOT I will be going to get a full straight through system anyway. Prop shaft came back, they did a superb job of it, for £60 it must be the cheapest one been made on here?

Got some good progress done today and with a bit of luck it will be up and running tomorrow.
Here are some pics of the intercooler pipes, its just a combination of the skyline intercooler kit pipework and the standard stuff. Painted black its very subtle. Just clears the alternator, tucking the pipe below the rad cap allows the bonnet to shut without any problems.

Well I didn’t get it started today, could have but I’m keeping the excitement at bay waiting till I get her completely finished, otherwise I might lose the momentum.
Fookin cold, wet freezing day halted progress a bit but managed to get a bit done. Pics are crap like the weather.
Fitted the anti roll bar, I spaced it down approx 10mm using some little top hat style things, come with seatbelt harnesses to allow a pivot when mounted. Came in handy here, still plenty left on the thread to get a good hold! There is about 3mm clearance from the sump, not to bad. Good reference for anyone attempting this problem I’d say.

Tight ^
Made up an exhaust mount to take a bit of the weight off the manifold, this uses an old rubber bush I had lying around, between two bits of steel to give movement.
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v369/143/71/849450062/n849450062_4765037_6053.jpg
Wired in the lambda and 2 stage boost controller. Just little bits that needed doing. Also finished attaching the alternator and starter terminals. Didn't get any pics my fingers couldn’t operate at this point.
Filled the car with 5ltrs of engine oil and the gearbox with 4ltrs gearbox oil. Also roughly filled and bled the clutch line.
I have one more bit of wiring to connect up, its water related but cannot for the life of me find out where to plug it in, I labeled it up so it defo came out of somewhere? Can anyone help? Very hard puttin the loom onto the engine in situ.

Just need to attach the battery, fill with coolant, bleed the clutch, tighten up the prop, fit gear lever, fit bodywork and were off. Watch this space.

Oh and vid's will be comming up, similar to the first start up of my Locost kit car with the kawasaki engine. :whip: But without the gay comments from the m8's / parent and the right way up this time! lol with a bit of luck.

Well what a nutcase I am,
Spent the last couple nights working on the car as it was dry. Just been doing stuff in the dark, outside using an old heater as a light as my lead light has broken. Very cold don’t know why I bother, social life has been non-existent this week!
Anyway managed to get the wings and wheels back on, gear leaver attached, combination of sx and skyline shifters, water and anti freeze in, battery on, all wired up ready to go, lowered it down, jacked it back up again, raised the suspension, lowered back down again. Then attempted to start her.
Here are some pictures of when it was first put back down, managed to catch these this morning before I set off for work.
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v369/143/71/849450062/n849450062_4798666_7290.jpg

Right then, turned the key, nothing! Fooking annoying bleep from the immobilizer, tried to re-program this several times but to no avail. Preceded to remove the immobilizer, it was spliced into the door lock and ignition barrel and is now out of the car. Wires taped up / reconnected.
Try again, nothing…. Battery is fully charged, jumped of my van just in case, Nothing. :annoyed: Sick as fook would have really warmed me up and was the only motivation for working in the cold and dark.
Left it for now, need to have a proper look at it, very nervous as I completely hate wiring and I cant handle the complication of it all!
Ian
do you hear the fuel pump prime and that sort of stuff ?
Ian200sx
12-11-2008, 23:16
Nope
Do you get a click from the 2 blue relays by the ECU ? They control most of the grounds and lives so id start there :)
Ian200sx
12-11-2008, 23:49
Yeah got the said click, gunna check the earths when I can, think i need a more solid earth from the battery to begin with.
you have connected the earth from the inlet manifold to the chassis havent you, or at least made one if there is not one somewhere else on the engine,
i had the loom from buffy and it worked first time so id definately say its something your end, have you checked the fueses in the box under the bonnet. silly thing to say really but its worth a check,
oh and to starks, you wont be able to use that prop drawing as you will need to make your own one up, this car is using the skyline cross member and will sit a good few inches further forward than your engine will, just get both halves up and measure your own once the motor is in.
I asked for a diff reason md :)
As i kinda brought the prop off someone who did the conversion but forgot to asked what they used lol, so asked the dimensions to check to see if it was :)
Luckily its shorter so i should be safe lol
And thats unlucky bud :( im sure ull get it up and runnin as soon as u hit it again
Ian200sx
13-11-2008, 12:50
The earth from the inlet is connected directly to the battery. Will check fuses, earths from battery etc when i get a chance, probable going to be the weekend now as its raining outside, I can handle the cold and dark but not all three. lol

Got the standard one in atm, but got a skyline walbro to fit? How would that make a diferance, im gettin a clicking from a relay in the RB loom, the blue ones?
Ian200sx
15-11-2008, 23:28
Gunna fit the Walbro in the mornign and see if that makes any difference. Any other ideas? Need to get it MOT on thursday and then im off to a Rolling Road day on the saturday.
Ian200sx
16-11-2008, 13:44
Hi All,
Walbro is fitted but still no luck with the fuel pump priming? The clicking is in fact comming from the ABS, dont know whether this is normal, all fuses are ok, completely lost now! :annoyed: Anyone>
Ian200sx
20-11-2008, 20:48
Hey, turns out the wiring loom I had made was a bit of a knacker job, :whip: - the live feeds to the ecu, fuel pump relay and injectors were not connected properly so it had no life whatsoever. Don’t know whether I am going to get my money back, or at least part of it…
Thankfully due to the kindness and genius of John Bennett we got it started last night! :sxoc: The guy is a total legend, was personally lost for ideas as I was sure everything I had done was right, probably because it was. Many thanks once again m8, really appreciate it. Couple hours spent splicing open the loom and feeding live wires and the job was a gud un. It ran on four to begin with but this was only because the ecu wasn't plugged in properly.
It really does run smooth as, vid below shows me balancing a £1 coin on the engine, it sounds whiney in the video but it isn't that bad, maybe the auxiliary belt is a bit tight? Will get a few more of the engine revving etc once the oil has worked in.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qfzQmIFwLBw&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qfzQmIFwLBw&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Over the moon at the moment, so carried on with the project, raised the rear a couple inch, its still sitting very low. Also tightened the prop shaft up and give it a test run with the rear jacked up, all gears work fine, clutch is great. Here are a couple pic’s of the skyline walbro which I fitted just for reference, its a straight fit which was a bit of luck.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v363/143/71/849450062/n849450062_4869043_5133.jpg

Going to weld up the chassis and fit the bumper at the weekend then its ready for a MOT, need to look at insurance now...
One more think which I’m not sure about tho, the speedo works but under reads allot, however there is no signal to the rev counter at all, is this normal. I though I would at least get a wrong reading as opposed to no life. Could this be more wiring problems?
Cheers

I believe there is a resistor that is needed to get the speedo working but other people made be able to shed more light on that..

20-11-2008, 21:08
i sooooo want to get mine done now
you need to put a 10k resistor between the RPM wire (yellow with red trace) to the earth wire on the ecu,
that will give you a signal, then you need to tweak the pot on the back of the dash a little to get the reading correct as it will overread by about a third
John Bennett
21-11-2008, 08:48
Unless the RB25 ECU is radically different to the others, then it'll be between the signal wire and 12V ignition live
The speedo's are out by a factor of two if I remember right, because the sender on the RB box is very different to the CA one. I'm not sure what people do to get around it, off the top of my head (you can recalibrate it with a screwdriver in the back, but I don't know if you can get it bang on without running out of adjustment range).
Glad to be of help the other night. 6-cylinder engines are damn smooth when you get them running right :smitten:

Well I didn't get the bumper on but done some more serious stuff instead, managed to weld up the chassis. Weird there was a hole in each leg at the front in the same place, looks like the previous owner jacked it up thro here. Anyway grinded flat and a nice 3mm plate welded over the top. Also raised the suspension up, its great for an MOT and winter but the arch gap is now a bit less the way it should be. Had it up on the crain for access.

Anyway ive found a leak now! :annoyed: looks like it's the PAS pump main pipe - or the radiator!! Will have a look in daylight.
good way to check if its either,
is it oil or water :wack: lol
its probably just the banjo bolt on the PAS pump as mine leaked the first time i fitted it, definitely worth getting new copper washers if you haven't already

Think your right there mate, its on a sharp bend which must be causing it to leak. Will probs put new washers on, cheers
Hey bud, did u find out where that connector went u couldnt find?
If not, its just above the oil cooler if ur still looking, i did mine from underneath, can see it easier :)

Hey bud, did u find out where that connector went u couldnt find?
If not, its just above the oil cooler if ur still looking, i did mine from underneath, can see it easier :)
Also what did u do with the carbon canister off the rb??
i've binned the carbon canister mate and blocked the pipes on the plenum
Yeh was gonna bin it as its no use to me, just wondering what everyone else had done :)
Do you know where it comes off the plenum if they can be used as vac for a boost gauge etc?
Razzario
28-11-2008, 19:06
you could do but iirc there's a factory boost gauge take off on the rear of the plenum. The carbon cannister uses the takeoff on the tb and one of the bigger takeoff on the main plenum body, the other on the plenum is the dv feed
yeah i know bout the factory gauge one :) just wondered if it was possible
Cheers bud, ill stop spammin your thread now ian :wack:
I feel for the problem with your fuel pump not priming bud :( I tried to start mine tonight and its doin the same, good thing is tho the engine is turning tho
Hope i can sort it tomorrow

Sorry to hear it didn't start m8, it was within the loom on mine, the ingition live was not connected. Just make sure the engine earths are on and check that the pump works, i ran a live from the battery to the pump to do this. Also that all the fuses are good. Here is another vid of mine running, sound soooo quiet its not even worth posting, lol. Exhaust note sounds better tho and under load .
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WO58bDfpx8Q&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WO58bDfpx8Q&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Maganged to fit the little plug in under the plenum, just... my wrists look a bit worse for ware! You can see it from the top between cylinders 5 / 6. I used a long screwdriver to slip in on and click. Bumper has gone on. This is the story.
Trimmed the underside off to the splitter and attempted to fit, no chance! The pics with the white cable ties are as far as I could get it on, it was hitting the IC pipes. Took it off and cut a much bigger amount off. It is now fitted flush with black cable ties and the 4 bolts at the top, solid and looks good, headlights and that went in before taking it for a run up the street and back for petrol. Glad to report that it drives well, mechanically its ok. Havn't taken it onto proper boost yet tho as I need to get a boost gauge on there.

Needs A Clean THO!
The last things to do are the reverse light wiring which I have a diagram for, the rev counter and the fan's need to be put onto an ignition live near the battery (Does anyone have any ideas of the best one to use)? MOT next sat.
Also Im going to make a aluminium sump guard, under tray / vent.
To also act as a splitter to cover the intercooler.
Leak seems to have fixed inself!!! Bout time I had some luck.
Thanks Again
Ian
Nice one bud :D
Glad its all turned out well, I better start cuttin my bumper to by the looks of it lol.... what exhaust do you have on it currently?
Really cant wait for mine now, will be soooo worth it :D
Good luck with the mot

Its some wort of powerflow backbox, big box mind and also the standard s13 cat and skyline downpipe. Pigeon noise is over powering tho tbh, BOV me thinks.
Yeh i thought that, can harldy hear a zorst :wack:
How come you still have the standard cat on??? Think mine will be a little bit noisier with there being one silencer and a 3" turbo back lol
Razzario
29-11-2008, 18:36
does the s13 cat and system mate to the r33 downpipe then? I hope to run a db power single box system with a japspeed 1 piece r33 elbow/dowpipe and an s13 decat pipe :wack:
Pretty much what im gonna be running razzario lol
And yeh, the s13 cat back and cat fit the downpipe
Ian200sx
29-11-2008, 19:23
Yeah its was a straight fit.
Already got a de-cat pipe on order, but will get a legit MOT first!
Also in reply to an earlier question, I still have the carbon canister as the standard skyline would.
Mate, you dont need a cat for any uk s13 ;)
There cat exempt on them :)

Wahey, just got back from the MOT station, passed on everything with no advisory's. :)
Had to hard wire in a couple rear number plate lights, but this was easy.
Also raised the rear suspension up a bit. The pics below show the difference, need to bring the front lightly lower and fit my 10mm spacers to the rear and all should look sweet.
I also fitted a MBC, never had a problem with these, and the same one has been on my MG for the past year holding steady boost, going to set this at 11psi. Norris designs boost gauge is in the car, ready for the A pillar pod which is in the post. Decat pipe is also on its way so will get some good vid's then.
Glad to say that it sat idling at the MOT station for about 40min without overheating, the rover fans are loud tho, but I am just going to have to live with it.
Need to make some sort of sump guard and shield at the front for the FMIC, it sits un-protected at the moment. Its starting to seem very fast, the ecu has got to grips with the engine now and its running sweet as fook, all leaks have been sorted.

So you can guess im a bit happy atm, just need to get paid for the insurance and Tax to get sorted and were off, probably into a hedge! lol
Ian
Looking good bud, glad it all passed... cant wait to see vids
How come your IC sits so low anyway lol... i managed to get mine a good few inches higher than that
Cant wait for mine now :D How much is your insurance gonna cost if u dont mind me askin???
Ian200sx
06-12-2008, 17:01
It sits so low because it wudn't got any higher, lol, its a 4" intercooler and I havnt removed the front crash bar. It sits the same height as the bumper. Not sure what insurance is going to be yet... bad i would imagine, lol
Ahhh ive left the crash bar off lol.... i know of alot of other ppl doin it this way when fittin a fmic
Same here, dont think i wanna :wack:
Swiftmini
06-12-2008, 19:17
I trimmed my crash bar to fit the fmic higher. I didn't have to cut the bumper much though.

Oh, and forgot to mention - the car came with them. :whip:
Have the following bits to switch over to my RB project:
* Strut Brace
* Gear Knob
* Driftworks Tension Rods
* 18" x 9.5" Rota GTR's all round with 255 rears & 235 fonts
* A Few Poly Bushes
* Apex 3" exhaust system, downpipe back, this looks really good and sounds
amazing with just the 4 cylinders.
* Full Wide arch Kit, wings and skirts are one pice, will be hard to fit but
hope to get this done by the summer.
* A Load of Spacers to pull the wheels out
* +Spares
The rest is going up for sale (Watch out for the F/S thred):
* Engine with Brand Spanking Turbo, not even dirty!
* Gearbox / Helix Clutch as a Manual Conversion Kit with Pedal, Cylinder etc.
* Aftermarket Rear Lights
* Steering Wheel
* Clifford Alarm
* Standard Parts
* My TSW Alloys which are on the RBs13 at the moment
and a few other bits.
Hope to get the wheels and exhaust put on the RB tonight, putting standard bits on the white one as we go. Oh the fun. The shell on the white sx is completly shot, rusted through, the fuel tank is in the boot for fooks sake, ha ha. Drives a dream though! Will get everything switched over / stripped / sold. Then see what I can do with the kit and shell.
Will get some more pic's tomorrow.
Ian

Hi m8,
No I aint on Jap North East, will have a look on there tonight, my m8 who runs torque north east was heading down to the stadium of light today for their meet, I was going to come along in the 200 but I went off and did something silly like buy another one. lol
Will pop along to a meet sometime im sure.
Ian
whats wrong with the white one then to break it up for parts,??? i know it may sound like undooing alot of work, but if its clean then why not take the engine out of yours and put it in the white one, then sell the black car with the CA re fitted from the white one

Next post will explain why, its completely rotton!

15-12-2008, 11:08
Well fook me, just spent a full day (sunday) on the car 10 till 10, didn't even stop for dinner.. and with a hangova- nuts. lol Got loads of progress done, to begin with tho I would like to state what a good mood I am in right now, exstatic with the car at the moment. This is why:
To begin with I started collecting bits from the white sx, this was basically removing all the modifications and replacing them with standard items which I either took of the black rb sx or which I had lying around.
I managed to pilfer the 4 poly bushes from the rear suspension, took all the wheels off, some 5mm spacers up front, 25mm H&R spacers from the rear, apex uprated and lowered suspension all round, the driftworks front tension rods an alloy strutbrace, and a MOMO gearknob. I also removed the apex full 3" system from the car later on.
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v1845/143/71/849450062/n849450062_5106155_2545.jpg

Right, I then moved the Black one into the lean-to and did the following.
* Removed the TSW cataluna's, up for sale.
* Raised the rear suspension an inch.
* Lowered the front an inch.
* Replaced the front tension rods with the driftworks items.
* Fitted a 5mm spacer to the front.
* Adjusted the camber top mounts on the coilovers &
* Fitted the front Rota Alloys >

They are wide as hell over the TSW's never mind the standard alloys. The front wheels are a perfect fit, you need the 5mm spacer to clear the coilovers but they swing full lock clearing the plastic arches, just by about 1mm. lol. Look awsome and come flush with the front arches.
I also fitted the MOMO gear knob, its better than the bare rod believe it or not.
http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v1845/143/71/849450062/n849450062_5106204_7987.jpg
I then moved to the rear and got the rota's on without any spacers, I had to drop the car up and down a few times to get the clearance right but now its sitting great, could probably do with getting the arches rolled just to make sure, anyone know anywhere good in the north east?
Ian200sx

To finish the day off nicely, I fitted the Apex full 3" system to the rb sx, I had to use my skyline downpipe and single piece decat pipe tho as the front section of the system is on the wrong angle and length for the RB engine. It goes from 2.5" > 3" to tailpipe, with two mufflers.

Its all on now and clears the rear towing eye fine, it sounds absoloutely amazing! Not too loud, but got such a purr. Wil get some vid's and more pics tomorrow. To late to start annoying the neighbours, I live in a street of 95% OAP's.
The white sx is now in the garden, I have kept it as a rolling shell.
Keep a look out for bits for sale, the turbo especially isnt even dirty its tht new. The rust is pretty bad mind, here are a couple pic's:

Was working on the car last night, in the frost the car looks ace. ;)
Managed to make myself a front splitter / intercooler guard. This curves around and mates back up with the bumper at either side, makes it look like a complete bit of bodywork. This is made out af aluminium and it tucks under > right back past the oil cooler.

Managed to get the thing completely road legal now so have been doing a bit of driving about in it finally. Vids to follow. Fitted this boost gauge / pod and set the boost to 11psi with a Manual Boost Controller, thing is it isnt boost right, or running as I think it should.

Basically it sounds like there is a huge air leek all of the time and the car is very hesitant, it almost seems like the recirculating BOV is open all the time? It doesnt really go all that well although it does hold boost.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Cheers
Ian
get rid of the recirc mate, best way to sort that problem. mine never had one all the time i had it and the turbo was fine after a year of hard abuse
Im thinkin of gettin rid of mine to, but seems in ok condition but its someot less to go wrong lol

Never had onbe on my MG, the pigeon noise is glorious too.
Yeh pretty much i imagine, let me know if you do it and if theres any noticible difference, as i may just chuck mine off :D
Swiftmini
23-12-2008, 10:18
If you remove it get rid of it completely.
If you just take the vacum hose off it keeps the recirc open, i beleive.
I removed mine when i made up all the different ic pipe work.
Kev
oh yes the pigeon noise, beats poo poo valve hands down.

23-12-2008, 10:34
Can pigeon damage a turbo at all tho, bit worried with it being a ceramic turbo and all?
Swiftmini
23-12-2008, 10:40
MD did it for ages with no probs, i ran my old engine with no dump or recirc with no probs, I'm sure you will be ok, its trying to make big boost that kills these turbos.
Ian200sx
23-12-2008, 10:47
Yeah I know what you mean, my MG runs all day at 12psi with no dump valve or recirc valve, they didnt have one as standard anyway. Is 11psi an acceptable boost to be subjecting the ceramic turbo to stalling. Alot of different opinions on this dont want to set it off again. Never had any encounters with ceramic turbo's tho, apart from the one on my works van which blew up and took the engine with it!!! hmmm, might see how severe the chatter is and whether it sorts my problems.
Should be ok as your not supposed to run over .85 bar on these anyway, its only when u go well over a bar u should start looking at a decent recirc setup :) (obviously after a diff turbo :D)

Well I removed the crappy mugen air filter, re-soldered the connections and cleaned out the coil packs with a dremel. There is a noticable improvement but it's still not fantastic. Think the blitz filter is making the difference, as the coils were fine.
Going to go for a HKS Adjustable actuator as the mbc doesnt work very well on this car, great on my MG tho, exactly the same one, it just seems to want to gradually increase at the top of the rev range.
Thinking the rev counter woe's are maybe because of it once being an auto? Still lost with that one like, lol useless!
Heading over to XO Power Tuning to get a power run and see what were at.
Its still very leathal on the road, especially in the ice. A journey is never complete without it trying to send me backwards at least once. Although the rear camber is completely wrong, only about 5 of the 9.5" tyre actually doing anything. lol
Cheers

Had a look at the car today and it turns out that the knock sensors had fallen out, superglued them back in and it works alot better now, much more responsive, going to get the boost sorted and then get her to a rolling road.
Ian200sx
07-01-2009, 23:51
Well its abit more responsive around the town but its still utter shite on the motorway. On my private test track I was struggling to get over a ton, 120 at a push. There is just nothing there under boost. Fookin sick, the 1.8 auto was quicker than this.
Hmmmm does sound like theres someot up bud :( Mine just flies to over 140 on standard boost,
Just triple check every pipe and timing and plugs all again just to make sure... also try pluggin it into a diagnostics machine see what it comes up with anythin :)
Describe what happens. Are the rev's starved or the top speed? (I.e. does it struggle in most gears at top rev's or just in the 4th/5th and what rev's doesn't it "go" anymore?)
Ian200sx
08-01-2009, 21:07
Dont have a rev counter mate, but its just dead under throttle. The turbo doesnt seem to be doing anything however its making full boost.
Going to book it in at XO Motorsport this weekend, back at work now and dont have the time to check things. They have a diagnostics tester but Im not 100% sure whether that will work with the loom being spliced to bits.
I dont have a Throttle positioning sensor however starks seems to have got away without this.
The timing must be out, the turbo seems to be working and gets red hot. It cannot be a boost leak because its making full boost at the inlet manifold, and spooles up fine. The AFM seems in order, it doesnt miss fire at all and the coilpacks are cleaner than new.
Its needs a throttle position sensor chap - some RB25's have one and another connector for it blanked off. Either way it will need one !
Is thew CAS roughly in the middle also ?
Everything connected up ?
No blow off valve in the wrong place or anything ?
All vac pipes 100% correct ?
I do have a tps bud  its the bottom connector on the throttle body, the top connector on the throttle body is someot to do with the idling on the auto models :)
It needs a TPS to know where in the fuel/timing map it is.
Ian200sx
09-01-2009, 11:40
Yeah I have the bottom one just not the one above as starks mentioned.
All vac pipes etc are correct and everything is connected up. Will let you all know the outcome of tomorrow, gettin it looked at by a pro.

A few little updates, fitted a HKS adjustable actuator last night, got this of Scotty in Hexham (skylinepart.com) for a bargain £30! Got the boost set at a modest 8psi but it still creeps up to about 11 at the top end of the rev range, I have taken it from the inlet, would plumbing it into the intercooler pipework help this?

Cheers for the nice comments, going to revive this shortly, just bought a Greddy Type RS BOV and some better brakes, the old ones have completely failed. Think the seales on the calipers had melted:
http://www.db-power.co.uk/images/345mm%20grooved%20wilwood%20kit%20WEB.jpg
http://www.dsmparts.com/customer/image.php?id=87&type=D
Fitting the BOV as its rough when you come off boost, stutters a bit.
Also going to remove the ABS as it doesnt even work, got a spare master cylinder also just in case.
Got the rear arches rolled and slightly flared last week, doesnt scrub at all any more.
Hopefully going to get the diagnostics wired in soon, and put it on a Rolling Road and find out whats wrong with her, im thinking this crappy XS power intercooler is leaking. Strage one mind. Need to get her prepped for Japfest and JapShow.

i really dont know weather i want to ditch the abs , i did on my last 14a and loved it right up till the point i needed it most. i ended up locking all 4 wheels trying to stop and smashed in to a clio who pulled out of a give way:cry:
i cant help thinkin had i keep the abs the car in my sig would still be parked in my drive now:(
I would say keep it. If you are going to be using the car on the road frequently then definitely keep it.

Brakes are fantastic, after they were bed in i gave it some grief, once i got out of the car and into my van daily driver I just kept going straight on when I wanted to stop, lol.
And i though the brakes on the van were superb because it was brand new, over assisted thats all. Well pleased with them, you get the same kinda horible braking noise when comming downn for top speed but thats to be expected, dont melt like the standard ones tho.
Took the s13 out last night and I can confirm that it does infact overheat when given some proper grief, gunna drill some more holes in the front me thinks, ha ha.

Ok, turns out the exhaust wasnt blowing, it was just my crude jubilee clip mounting rattling about. ooops
Front ARB is on, had to space it down properly to clear the RB sump, made these 20mm spacers to suite the shape of the sx suspension subframe and to mount the rubber firmly. So far so good, no knocks, looks like it may bottom out on the front tie rod but it should be ok. These were welded on.

Been to get the car mapped today, it was just done on the Hand Controller for the Power FC. But ive been assured its safe and spot on the 0.8bar setup for the actuator.
Quite an alarming drop in power with the standard ECU on, however replacing it with the power FC curred this, really not sure what it was but its the reason I couldn't get anything above 4.5k. Ignition timing screwed big time, any one have any ideas.
Here are the graphs.

Fuel / Boost
Its ok for now, didnt pay alot to get it set up and better things to come pending the sale of my other car.
Having had this done, the car was overheating pretty bad today, running at over 100degrees on the motorway! Very hot day and no air flow to the rad, :(. I have since bought a couple of 10" slimline fans and a 45mm alloy rad, going to fit these and cut some holes in the bumper, hopefully sort it out.

Looking good mate. Mine ran 290.5 on the stock ecu but its rich as fook.
I would put a viscous fan in if I was you. You can fit an sr20det viscous with a 40 something mm rad. Although you have got r33 crossmember which makes it tighter. Dan joyces pirate used to overheat on the motorway with twin fans. Now he has viscous he has no probs at all.
Cheers

kev, i dont think thats right mate:no:
a viscous fan is only for low speed drivin and stand stills when there is very little or none airflow to the engine.
on the motorway at 60 and 70 mph the amount of air coming in to the bay is alot more then the viscus could ever produce and it becomes literally N/A
i think part of the problem is the amount of things in front of the rad. i would move your oil cooler from the middle to a vent at the side and your old rad might have been on its way out.
i thought you said you bought a 52mm rad not 45mm ian:confussed:

Yeah m8 went with the 52mm one in the end after posting this. Gunna be very tight, got some neat ideas in my head for the bumper trimming tho. :)
Hopefully twin fans and some clever ducting should improve things.

At The Bodyshop For Tailgate Painting
Managed a 13.6sec 1/4mile at 104mph at Santa Pod last weekend. Well pleased with that for now considering the zero grip and hot day.
The two nights before the event were 2am sessions on the car. I replaced my radiator with a alloy racing item, it fitted in the same standard place but there is now 0mm clearance between the I/C pipes and the engine / radiator.
Fitted two new 10" slimline fans to aid cooling and a new thermostat, car now sits at 85>95degrees sensibly, achieved 300miles to 60ltrs also. lol Fans are silent compared to the old ones which sounded like a fog horn.
Holes were cut in the bumper to aid airflow, number plate can easily be removed with two screws, exhaust was also welded up into place on new brackets as it was making a rattle.
Here are some pics.
Will get vids etc when my mate uploads them.

Tomei 1.2mm Head Gasket
Turbo should be hear shortly, its a standard unit rebuilt with steel internals, should be cabable of 450bhp and more than enough boost. Better still it will spool instantly just like the standard unit. Stainless elbow going on to and uprated adjustable actuator.
Then its off for a new re-map.
Its defo an engine out job, no room whatsoever for gearbox bolts to come out and would never be able to do the timing.
Watch this space. gunna be some stressfull days.
mate be very weary of them injectors...
apprently there just 300zx injector machined out!
have a work with scottys13 as he has to rebuild his now as it ran lean!

Ha ha,
Cheers for the offer, I was out at 7 in the morning yesterday and finally got finished at 9. Firstly I apologies for not getting any pictures, it was a long day and I was so greased up I would have almost certainly ruined the camera.
I couldn't remove the front sub frames as I had previously welded these on at the anti roll bar mounts, when I made them spacers, was a seriously tight fit with these in place.
So yesterday was spent, removing the head, all timing gear etc, polishing up and replacing the gasket, rebuild the head, new timing belt then onto be-building everything back up.
Pas pump, suspension, rack, alternator, water pipes, wiring, afm, new turbo setup, larger injectors, exhaust, anti roll bar, oil cooler etc etc etc.... I wont bore you any further.
Eventually everything was back up, and I am very pleased to say it started first time! This wasn’t without problem tho as I put the heater matrix hoses on the wrong way, doh. All the water just backed up and didn’t circulate around the block, causing it to heat up rather quickly, not good with a new gasket. Thankfully I noticed my mistake and changed them around. Now the heater matrix doesn’t work!
http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs163.snc1/6093_247800255062_849450062_8095290_7007266_n.jpg
On the drive home from SkylinePart the temperature sat at a constant 81 degrees so I’m happy with that. Turbo spool seems crazy however it needs a map first before I do anything other than cruise along. Can’t wait!
Massive thanks to Scotty once again for letting me use his lift and for supplying some parts! Top bloke! Gud luck with the JDM all stars, bdc and Pro Drift. The Rocket Bunny is unreal!

Well the guy who was going to map it has 'it would seem' gone AWOL!
Stuck now and slightly pissed off.
Had a go at maping it a little myself, got the air flow meter and injections correct but nothing else will be, it at least dives now without missfiring all the time.
Desperate, dont really want to travel down to London, and dont want to pay £600, why is the North East utterly poo for tuning and motorsport!

Hi All,
Managed to get it mapped for the time being at Motorscope northalerton, its running alright but still going to get it done somewhere else just to make sure.
Here is one of the graphs I took on the day, havn't scanned the paper copys in yet. The actuator needs bracing as it is flexing, then going to try for 17psi plus.
Its running at about 10.7 AFR at 15-16psi.
Max torque at 331.9 lbft at 4.683 rpm
Max Power (Flywheel) at 374.4bhp @ 6.361 rpm

To help with some of the overheating problems I lifted the bonnet up with some spacers, abot 10mm - probably makes no difference but I was bored on the day and it gives the engine a bit more clearance. Was fouling on the BOV previously.

Was at creamfields festeval the other week and paid £12 for secure parking with make believe CCTV, after the event I went back to the car and found this. Someone had tried to break in via the roof lining, daft fookers, waste of time and spoilt the car! I recon it was the staff.

The car has developed a strange idle now. See the vid below, its stupidly annoying, especially when parking up at night, neighbours think im a right tw@.

that break in cack sucks - someone in the NW had something similar, fact that they're cheeky enough to try and then to do it badly... idiots
with the idle - vacuum leak i'd say.
check all the little vac pipes to make sure there's no splits/hoses come off.
the car is looking good mate.
too bad about that misfortune at the event... I simply can't understand why someone would do that type of things...
anyway, can you post a closer pic of the bonnet lift spacers fitted? a friend of mine wants to make something like that on his car. is it just put some washers between the hood and the hood bracket, on the lower bolt (when the hood is up) ?
id say that idle is due to it being too rich on the map down there, mine is doing the same at the moment since ive raised the fuel pressure.
get the laptop out and lean off the idle areas a little and see how that helps,

I simply used two 5mm spacers at each bolt hole, longer bolts needed obviously. Take the bonnet off, place the washers down and put the bonnet back on. Really simple, will get u a pic when I get a chance.
Cheers M.D> pretty sure thats what it is, smells rich too. Unfortunately I dont have the gear or knowledge to lean it out, got a fc commander on it but not exactly sure what I am doing. Needs done properly, have no faith in the guy who did it.
Cheers Mate

Just a little update,
Well its still going, completely ruined all 4 tyres so looking for some new ones at the moment. Need more drift days up North, its good fun aint it! :wack:

Not happy with the bump steer the car has, going to try and sort that next, weight of the RB up front and i'm not sure if the springs are right for the job either. Going to do tyres, some sort of mod on the rack and get it aligned properly.

Drift days are the bollocks :D
Iam in the process of sorting bumpsteer, think I have it sussed now.
What front springs are you running? Iam running 10kg springs and its pretty good

Oooooo, do spread the knowledge? lol, I'm not sure what springs they are, just the Apex fast road coilover ones. Bought them 2nd hand. I'm sure the majority of my bump steer problems have been made worse by a tight fitting arb, I spaced it down to clear the sump. What problems did you have? Cheers, Ian

Bit of bad news people, Engine has gone! Poor mapping finally raised its head! Should have listened to you lot earlier and got it done properly.
Hit 80 knock on the power fc and got sever detonation, also hit 112degrees temperature on a top speed run the other day, good news is that I made 170mph before hand @ 6852rpm in fifth!
Here is the pictures of the damage so far. Car lost all power and threw clouds of smoke everywhere, burnt all 5litres of oil!.

Going to take the engine out (Again) and see if I have holed any pistons, 1.5cm of plug missing so that must have went somewhere. Cylinder 2 with the oil in, plug seems ok there, valve steam oil seals? What do you think the damage is?

Mate you should do a compression test before you strip it down. You may have got a away with melted plugs.
Not good news though.
Oh and 170 is badass welldone. Are you using s13 or skyline diff?
Ian200sx
18-10-2009, 22:02
Sx diff with skyline box, was thinking I might have been lucky but with that amount of oil in the cylinder, its come back up through the plug??? Although the plug wasn't melted in said cylinder. hmmm, do you think the head gasket went due to the high temperature? Leaked oil into cylinder 2 and the knock on efect melted the plugs in the other cylinders? No sign of water mixing with the oil.

Scratch that, just looked in the combustion chamers with a tourch, there is an electrode shaped crater in piston 1. Looking at the cost in this, its probably better for me to put a new lump in. Dont understand how it blew, even had a steel 1.2mm head gasket in there and only runnin 15psi? Is poor mapping basically caused this, the plugs were denso IQ24's? DEATSCHEWERKS injectors to blame?
Just bought 4 new tyres too, oucha.
Hey,sorry to hear about this mishap and hope nothing too serious. Those 18" you are running, what size tyres have you fitted? any catching on the fenders and did you roll them fenders? In the process of doing the RB 25 conversion and must say your build has inspired me big time. Have ordered an stock r33 front clip and fitting everything stock for now as it will be my dailly drive. Cheers and keep it coming.

Hi All,
Got some work done on Sunday, first built a tent for the car as I am stuck working outside. Bit of sheet, bish bash bosh, lasted all of one night before it blew away. Ha Ha
Got the old engine out, opted for the cut front slam panel off completely approach. I brought it out complete, leaving the subframe and bodywork intact. Was a very tight squeeze, I had to loosen the subframe and drop it half an inch, came out eventually tho. It wasn’t without problems, left the gear selector on so I have somehow dislocated that, spins 360 now which cant be good?
Anyway here are a few pictures of the progress, also got the new engine home, 50k Spec 1 RB25det, skyline-part.com (scotty) left it complete so everything I dont use I am just going to take back. Once again top guy, can't fault the service.

Alreet Fellas,
New engine is in, spent last Friday night building the new block up, put on a new timing belt, multi layered steel manifold gasket, also checked the turbo and glad to see the blades looking in good nick with no play etc. phew.
Manifold was a bitch to get back on, warped to fook with the heat so had to open up a couple holes to get it to fit. Also put the viscious fan back on and the 550cc injectors switched across.

I have a day off on Friday so going to work come magic on the front end to fit the rad, fmic pipes and viscious, got a bright idea for my setup so watch this space.
Sorry about the crap pictures, but appreciate that I am doing this in the cold, dark and outside and there only on my mobile. Will get some decent ones thro the day on friday of the further progress.

Viscous fan is a good idea
sorry to hear about the melted engine mate :(.
be interested to see what its like now its out, whip the head off and have a look,
id definately go for poor mapping, or mapping that was not quite safe enough. and a long top speed run was enough to cook it.

Yeah I agree with md that sustained hi revs were probably the cause. Rb's pool all they're oil in the head at high revs and are prone to det.
I was looking at alternative engines but now I'm looking into rb30 bottom end.
You an external oil drain at the least for track work, I have one but not fitted it yet.

Old Engine Away
:) Did 15hours straight on the car yesterday and finally got her back on the road this morning.
Story goes to fit the viscious fan with my current intercooler pipe work I had to first space it out 25mm - 1" forward, then in order to clear the radiator I removed the front chassis cross member. This was replaced with a 75x75 RSA and some further bracing, its all welded up now and as you can see from the pics its a very snug fit, I hat to remove the bonnet lining somewhat and trim the fan blades down by 10mm, overall tho I am well happy with the result. 10mm clearange around the fan, obviously new rad pipes were put back in place. The front crash bar was removed also. Still retained the twin electric fans, although I doubt they will do anything as this thing shifts some air.

Hi All,
Little update, got the car MOT'd last week, I had to fully replaced the rear break lines as they were slightly corroded but other than that it sailed thro.
Took the 4 hour drive down to weston-performance in Birmingham yesterday to get the car mapped on the new engine. Top bunch of guy's, very comprohensive job, Greg took his time, checking the compression, plug gaps and checked for airleaks with a smoke test before he even started the mapping. Paul Weston took me thro to the town to get something to eat etc, pleased with the service!
We made 394.9bhp at 16psi to begin with but then took a degree of ignition timing off to make it a bit safer, finally ending up with 385.8bhp and about 370 ft/lb of torque, we had a few probelms with the coil-packs breaking down, so Greg tapped these up to get us thro the mapping. Bear in mind I no longer have the steel HG on and the engine is standard internally i'm very happy with this, same map as the Japspeed drift cars, tweeked for my engine.

Did 530miles yesterday and used 125ltr's of V-power, works out at 18ish mpg - motorway cruising , although it was better on the way back with the new map. The old map was very substandard, with way to much ignition timing and fuel, part of the reason why the previous engine blew up.
Snow made the drive entertaining, but finally managed to get it home and into the garden, although not in its usual parking space.

Good power that mate, what tubby you got in there? Also whats the rest of your spec, plugs, injectors etc etc. What was the final psi at 385 bhp too?
I'm interested as we're just on building one at the moment for my girlfriend similar to mine (430 at 1.3bar but a good lot of mods) but were not going too far down the tuning route other than a bit more boost and the front mount. Will still have std tubby and head gasket, injectors etc...
Ps if your ever down Thirsk way with your's drop me a pm and feel free to come and kick some tyres.. I think we chatted to you at a JNE SOL meet last year there was a black one there with an RB lump in it?

Yeah that was me , like I said engine is standard internally, the spec is.
Conceptua Tuning 450bhp rated turbo using standard exhaust housing with T38 compressor, just running on the actuator pressure at about 16psi maybe peaking at 17psi on occasion.
FMIC
Deatschewerks 550cc Injectors
NGK Iridium Plugs 7's
Walbro GTR Pump
Excedy Padel Clutch & Cover
3" Exhaust from Turbo Elbow Back
Blitze Air Filter
Z32 AFM
Apexi Power FC Management
Thats about it really. Always ran on decent 5w 40 oil and Run on V-Power
Would have liked to have a steel HG in there, but apparently the piston ring lands will be the first things to go. Barely reaches 80 degrees Water Temperature now with the viscious fan on, so should be reliable.
Ian
Awesome car one thing though and maby its just cause ures is an rb but that fuel economy seems terrible my sr20 s14 which is 434bhp gets around 28-30mpg on the motorway

Rite, got a few bit on order to boost this back to life. :sxoc:
Haven’t driven the car for nearly 2 months now, not very often since i got the map. Weather has been crap and the roads are even worse, fooking potholes are unreal where I live, boy called timmy o tool stuck in the bottom of one of em.
I put her back up on stands last weekend to sort the front suspension out; basically I have been getting really bad bump steer and lack of feel in the front. I pinned this down to four reasons.
1) ARB, as seen previously I have this spaced down about 20 - 25mm, I think this is putting unwanted stress and preload on the bottom wishbone, often it would even bottom out on the front TC arm.
2) Steering track rod ends are not level, with the car being lowered significantly, and with the heavy block in the front. Inducing bump steer.
3) The last time I raised the coilovers, I didn’t have time to undo the bottom of the strut, I merely raised the spring seat, thus increasing spring pre-load. This was giving a very harsh ride and exaggerating things further.
4) Poor alignment, (i.e. never been set up), also was getting a fair bit of slop in the bottom wishbone.
To cure these raised issues I will be doing the following:
1) Grind off all of the spacers involved with the ARB, make up new brackets to mount ARB in its original position using the front X member bracing bolt and the engine X member mounting bolt. To clear the sump this will be sculpted (Read bashed in with a hammer).
2) I have ordered some adjustable (anti-bump steer) track rod ends from apex-performance, hopefully to dial out the horrible angle there sitting at.
3) Set pre-load on springs to minimum, 5mm recommended to eliminate this, and set coilovers fairly soft.
4) 4 wheel laser alignment with new driftworks race / adjustable bottom arms.
5) Also putting some new oil in there, as I will drain the sump.
Hopefully this will sort my problems out, HOPEFULLY - following a full setup.
Get that sorted for now then onto the rear during Easter. Going for solid setup with welded diff.
Pics to follow, once I find my camera.
All the best

Okies,
Front suspension is sorted, turned out I had massive preload on the drivers side spring only. Dont ask me how this happened, I have no idea. Anyway sorted that out and mounted everything back up.
Went spot on untill I went to fine adjust the height of the car which was the last thing to do. The bottom locking collar stripped its threds, thus why it is missing in the pic, Offside.
Sump formed well, only took a little curvature however I did also dent the bottom of the sump with the jack when I lowered it down, :annoyed:. All sealed well tho, no leaks and it shouldnt affect the capacity.
Oh yeah, I also increased my hardstanding area a tad, little bit of DIY flag laying. :)

Cheers m8,
Right, first I took the exhaust off.

Calipers tied up,
Cooler disconnected,
Electrics disconnected,
Prop Off,
Breather pipe off,
Coilovers off,
Then wire brushed the 4 nuts holding the subframe up, lots of WD40, lots of heat and as easy as you like:

What brake calipers are those? Looks like you need bigger disks.
Keep up the good work bud

Willwood 4 pots, 345mm brembo disks. Big enough.
First pics of the progress so far.
Heated the core up with oxy-acet first to get even heat distribution.
Then welded up the main areas:

Was using a very high powered welder so was a bit wary of putting too much heat into it. I have left it for now as it started to become very tight in turning, hopefully because of the gears expanding, I hope. :indiff:

Yes they are quite big, but I was referring to the way the pads are off the edge.
is it ok to have the pads overlapping the disk like that?

Hmm, see what you mean, never noticed that tbh. Its as if the calipers could do with being moved inwards a couple mm looking at the pic. Will have a look when I come to put the coilover locking collar on. Its a DB-Power willwood kit, never noticed ay problems.
