I did over 400 motorway miles yesterday, around 100 of which were in very slow moving traffic - so....

If you're stuck in traffic on the motorway, which lane do you think goes the quickest and why?

Personally, I shuffle over to lane 2 cos

a) There are no wagons
b) When coming up to a slip road you don't have to let traffic in
c) Everyone in lane 3 (fast lane) are cars so it is pretty much well packed up and its more stop/start rather than moving.

You forgot one - The hard shoulder:D ;)

It depends - If I'm a few miles from my turn-off junction then it's Lane 1 otherwise it's Lane 2. I just sit back, crank up the stereo and Chillllll ! (whilst keeping my dodgy eye on the temp guage!)

When this was tested properly it was discovered that they are all about the same over an average journey.

Slow lane, even though you have to let people on and off, I still find it moves quicker as you left some off you can usually boot it for a while anyhow, then let a couple on!

Vez, I'd agree.... the slow lane seems to move quicker. Especially on the M8 going into Edinburgh at rush hour.

Use Trafficmaster and avoid the jams and an early heart attack I say.

Failing that, weave in and out of all lanes and piss people off :D

Aye, Lane one is some times faster but 2+ are less hassle. Or just avoid motorways in rush hour like i do nowadays :D

yep, deffo lane 1, and sometimes you can nip off the slip road and come back up the other side and gain a few more places:D :D

You forgot the choice " whichever lane I'm not in" :(

I always pick the wrong one. :(

Don't think any are faster than the others but lane 1 is easier. Trucks are not keen on stopping and starting so it tends to be a steady 10mph rather than 20 zero 20 zero.

Yeh, I hate it when people do that at traffic lights, I just crawl along in first so that I get the lights just as they're about to go green. However, on the odd occasion, people behind get annoyed that I don't follow the car in front by doing stop start antics

I do that on a daily basis:p
Also, follow emergency services vehicles - you can then safely do 50 in a traffic jam!:D
