View Full Version : Would anyone like to help me fit a manifold?
Not something I've done before and, as its my daily driver, I'd rather get it right. Looking at it, the strut brace, catch tank (2 easy ones), part of the exhaust and turbo will have to come off. Got a decent sized garage to do it in if the weather isn't so great.
Would anyone like to pop up/down on a sunday for a couple of hours and give me a hand? Fair recompense would be forthcoming! (lots of tea/coffee, lunch and beer tokens!)
Cheers guys.
5 min job!
Would love to give you a hand... but had a slight accident with the S15 this morning... she isnt exactly driveable at the mo :wack:

Lol, its not a 5min job!
Granted its easy and straight forward, but it can be time consuming getting to all the bolts etc, espeacially if there seized!
Get soaking them in some WD40 or penetrating fluid etc.
Chan you spaz, dont tell me you lost the back end..........
:D maybe a quick job for someone who knows what they are doing and has done it before - for me, it will be the first time I have removed a turbo and manifold from a rather cramped engine bay! For that matter, its the first time I have removed a turbo and manifold ever!
Chan - what have you done? If you've smashed it up, Bex won't be happy...
Adam - its getting to all the nuts and bolts that I'm not looking forward to (esp on my own!)

I'll give you a hand if I'm not busy mate, changed the gasget on mine a while ago.
I'm assuming you already have some braided hoses?
Take the whole turbo arrangement out, it's the easiest way lol.
Might be able to help if i'm not doing overtime one weekend :)
To Channie... it's just another upgrade opportunity :wack: I'll let chan tell the story.

Don't think there are any on there. Can't see at the moment and it wasn't mentioned in the spec when I bought it. Can't really afford to buy much else at the moment though.

Its just getting to everything to un-bolt it that I'm not looking forward to - could probably do it on my own but would rather have someone around who knows whats what to help and advise!
I love working on the car myself but get a little nervous when its my daily drive and I can't afford to break it! If the car was a project, I'd stick it in the garage and have a go myself and either a) proudly announce that I'd done it or b) get  then  when it doesn't go the way I want it to. Then possibly end up :smash: it. Very low supply of patience unfortunately :(
Well if you havnt got any braided lines yet then get some... makes life so much easier! And hard pipes break!
Trader on here.. hosesolutions... good prices!
When removing this teggers you may aswell change the oil... as most will pour out the oil feed at the bottom of the block if you are changing braided lines

What manifold do you have anyway? a tubular one?
Apparently refitting the standard solid water and oil feeds is a pain, when I did mine I bought the braided hoses and some spare copper banjo washers.
Agree with scouger the easiest way is to remove the whole lot, when I did mine I removed the turbo still attached to the manifold and the downpipe still attached too.
An i would also invest in a new OEM turbo to manifold gasket with clips... a proper pain if this goes as you have to take the whole thing out again!
p.s.
after i removed the pay and display meter!

Been there, done that... so true. 2 days after I changed to braided lines I then had to do the exhaust gasket lol. Not impressed.
So so far, your gonna have to explain to Bex why you need:
1) Braided Lines (as the old ones likely to split or weaken)
2) Oil (to top up with)
3) Exhaust manifold gasket
4) Maybe a single 3" exhaust gasket
To be fair, being the car it is you may get away with not doing the gasket if it was already done recently by arry?

If you seperate the manifold from the turbo you should always change it... not worthe the hassle of it blowing seein as you already have it off!

Ah shit what the hell chan!!
What happened, is the chassis ok?
what you need, bumber and bonnet?
And is that a parking ticket to? :( lol
Ouch Chan! What happened there???
So so far, your gonna have to explain to Bex why you need:
1) Braided Lines (as the old ones likely to split or weaken)
2) Oil (to top up with) Needs doing soon anyway
3) Exhaust manifold gasket Ordered from Apex last week
4) Maybe a single 3" exhaust gasket Ordered from Apex last week
Just the braided lines then. Hmm. What sort of price are we looking at for them? Asked Wolfe for a price on his unfitted ones from his 'vulture thread'. I think I might be able to get away with Bex just growling if they are cheap. Or might just cope with the slight blow until it either gets really bad (its not much now but I prefer to catch these things early) while I save work tips etc for some new ones.
Martin: Yes, I have a braced up Apex stainless one.
Definately get the braided ones... look on hosesolutions you lazy git! :p
Hand brake issues.... a hill... rolling... and pay and display meter stopping the car!
There is no front bumper left :(
Gunna Channie factory it the best i can :wack:
Nah if it was a parking ticket i would have cried like a little girl!
Chan, I mean if he takes out the whole assembly (i.e. manifold/turbo/elbow + possibly downpipe) he may get away without changing the gasket... but it may get stressed and break the compound inside with the pulling out etc. If it's reasonable new he may get away with it :)
100% agree that if he seperates or perhaps even loosens off too much then replace.
EDIT: Teggers> Just phone up Hose Solutions and say your a member of SXOC and interested in the braided hoses for your s14a. If you phone they will quote you the discounted price. Nice guys at HS :)

The whole point is he is seperating to put on a new mani!!!
LOL.. d'oh! For some reason in my head I was thinking about the turbo to elbow gasket.
Yeah, replace it! :D
Matthew
Already ordered the gaskets! Just the hoses. Will call Hose Solutions but wait and see if Wolfe wants to sell me his...

I hope you realise how easily these manifolds can crack, I had 2 apex manifolds one cracked and the other I just wasnt happy with the welds so didn't bother putting it on.
Unless your going over a certain power level (300bhp ish I think) theres not alot to gain from them. Cast iron manifolds FTW!!
It could have just been me being unlucky with them though.
I'm guessing this is more for the bling factor though  :ghey: :D
Channie : Unlucky man :(

Teggers - braided oil & water lines £75 posted from Hose Solutions (purchased some a few wks back) The OEM oil pipe is 75 alone from Nissan
Monkey - I cracked 4 s/steel tubular manifolds inside 2yrs in my original S14 (reason for it going off the road way back when...:wack:)
Chan - bad luck dude, good job no-one was hurt :indiff:

Thats gutting mate, any other damage other than we can see or have you been a little bit lucky (if you can call it that):(

lol.. it doesn't matter what you done but your obviously guilty... hovering over this thread ;) Yeah my mistake, I was going by your good reputation :wack:

It was bought (used) for a good price, I like them (Ok - a bit of bling there but I like shiny engine bits!) and there is a slight blow in my existing one that gave me the perfect excuse to get a new(er) one! Didn't realise at the time about the braided hoses though.
Eventually I want to go over the 300bhp mark but I'm planning on getting all the basics and supporting stuff done first so when I finally hit big numbers, the car will be able to reliably cope with them. Then I'll just have to sort out my deplorable driving talent (or lack of... I don't really think its that bad but it could be soooooooo much better - just need to practice. And buy lots of tyres!)

They quoted me less than that with the washers and other ancilliaries yesterday

It was indeed Ari Vatanen's car - well known to Apex too as he lived down the road from them! So I know the cars been looked after well! Plus the HUGE folder of receipts and bills and 3 cd's of images of the build-up.

Ari/Arry well they sound the same! Anyone could have made that mistake! :wack:
