Dartmoor run and BBQ/SW Photoshoot

The idea is to meet up at some point over the summer for a BBQ and a run across some of Dartmoor's best roads.

It has also been suggested (Monkey Magic) that we could arrange the photoshoot mentioned by Gary. This is now going to have the SW Photoshoot as part of the run/BBQ.

So make your cars look pretty.

Possibly make it Augusts monthly meet - that gives us a little over 3 weeks to finalise. Just a thought.

I can't do August bank holiday weekend 23/24/25th due to family things. And the 1st weekend of September is also out.

60mph... ish;), down a road just a little wider than the car in the dark. :smitten:

altho to be fair its not for everyone that sort of thing and even i preferr a wide road occasionally to really get the best from the car. i still think the roads that are most suited to the s13 are the ones from the tamar bridge down to newkey. (not the bypass)

My fave are the rolling hill roads, long sweeping fast bends with the occasional tight turn to keep you on your toes and a few fast straights with no ponies on the road!!!

Where exactly in Princetown are you gonna do a bbq? I'm regulary at Princetown within a metre of the prison, and can say, it isn't exactly the most photogenic place unless it's sunny. (there are some cool areas around princetown however with interesting land marks :))

Right then! Seriously need to get this sorted. Especially now Gary can't make it due to imminent mutant arrival and Channie having a car in bits (again :wack:) but he did say he'd sort the BBQ and some food out!

I suggest meeting at Haytor in one of the numerous car parks there (not one with potholes though - I hit one and now my splitter and half the bumper are held on with cable-ties :rolleyes:) for the BBQ followed by a run across the moors minding ponies, sheep and other wierd objects in the road.

Suggested route: Haytor straight across the moor on the B3357 through Widecombe-in-the-moor, Ponsworthy, Dartmeet, Two Bridges, Merrivale ending at Tavistock for the cornish bunch to go home (as its a little further for them to come this way to the starting point) This is only about 20 miles.

Alternative: Back from Haytor to Bovey Tracey, up the A382 to Moretonhampstead then down the B3212 through Lettaford to Two Bridges again then either to Tavistock or to Yelverton. This is slightly longer at 30 miles.

Or do we want a longer run? We could do a great big figure 8 incorporating both these routes which would be about 56 miles.

Matt - I'd also like your input here as you live near there and would know the roads better than I do!

Right. We had a scout around Haytor on monday and there are a couple of car parks that would suit.

First one is the main one at the Exeter end (usually has an ice cream truck too!) and the second is a little further on (but before the cattle grid!) Both are flatish for you low people and have minimal potholes (:mad:). I suppose it depends on how many other people are there on the day where we actually park up so may have to play it by ear.

The breaker bar (aka 8ft-9ft thin scaffold pole) will not fit in my car! lol! You're more than welcome to come over whenever and use it...

The ratchet you can borrow bud....like i said in the other post though, i don't have 36mm socket, the biggest i have is a 32mm :(

Honestly my inner rear tyre is dangerously close to going but you can see why I don't want to pay for a tyre I won't use as I have a 5 stud set of barely worn tyres sitting in the garage.

Even if I just get the fronts done I can swap the 4 studs to the back, but obviously I'll have to drive like a grandard with fat tyres on the front (8.5" rim 215's stretched) and skinny on the back (7" rim no stretch).

I reckon a good place for BBQ is Yelverton Aerodrome. We have just been past it and it would be ideal as the bunkers weill shelter the wind and all the cars will fit in there. There isn't many places out at Tavi that we can all fit and have a BBQ.

Somewhere at Burrator reservoir would be reasonably well sheltered as well, but Crapstone is a good place, and pretty cool for pics as well against the bunkers, and certainly better for more cars if you want to take pics.

Exeter people. Meeting at Exeter services at 1-1:15 then convoying to Haytor (one of the car parks. Meeting Plymouth guys at approx 2pm in said car park. All convoying to Yelverton Aerodrome at approx 2:45-3pm meeting with Channie and Gary for a BBQ and photo op. Then convoy back across the moor home afterward.

The whole point of this was to try a short run across the moors as a group with the view to maybe doing a longer run another time. This is an experiment to see how we get on for a drive out rather than meeting in a car park for a chat. Sort of more car-y as the whole point of our cars is to drive them not stand around looking at them. Thats what I originally though anyway!!

It was fun! I love driving in convoy too - just adds to the enjoyment I get every time I drive my car!

Perhaps a coastal run next time? Hop from town to town. If you want me to do it again, I will definitely scout out the route in my car first as some of the bumps were harsh in my car, I dread to think of the spinal condition of the people with hard coilovers. And the way I originally planned went through a ford that I would have grounded out in and mines not that low.
