this has ben going on for a while (about two years or more since i first brought it up among some friends)

The polar bear without a doubt. It would crush the tiger. The chances of the tiger being able to grab and hold the bear in a fatal bite without being killed or maimed are remote.
IMHO. ;)

i think id have to agree with james, the polar bear would probably kill the tiger, minly cos even tho the tiger is pretty hard, its not gonna be quick enough to finish off the polar bear before it gets a beating.
Polar bear ! Polar bear! Polar bear! :)

Gotta be the polar bear. Just cuz of pure size... the tigers teeth wouldn't get anywhere near any 'vital' bits cuz of the fat layers the bear has to keep out the cold.
On top of that... IIRC polar bear flesh is poisonous. They're considered to be the only animal on the planet that is above humans on the food chain....
ie... they like to eat us.... we can't eat them.
I'm gonna say tigger as no 1 else is backing him :p :D

What's the temperature on the pitch? If it's above 25C I money is on the Tiger, more agile, and unlikely to suffer heat stroke!
well as some one was saying in another thread hynerian (sp?) mountain dogs were bread in france to take down brown bears and they can. a tiger looks to be a bit stronger/ faster and has bigger teeth than a mountain dog. ok a polar bear is bigger than a brown bear and as said above but i diodn't know they have poisonous flesh. i tihnk that both would come out being fatally wounded. whether which dies first is another matter i.e. the tiger could get in a fatal bite/hit and ossibly kill the bear almost strait asway where as as the tiger has been poisened may die later.
close fight i'd say
I'd back the polar bear for a first round KO, if the pitch is in Moscow :D On a hot day, the Tiger might be able to pull off a shock upset. Anybody got Don Kings number?:D

Even though there are facts of the hippopotamaus causing more deaths of man than any other animal in Africa, it's hard to believe an animal with no fangs doing this. It does make sense, despite their very respective advantages and disadvantages, a Siberian tiger would be over powered by the massive weight of a Kodiak or grizzly bear in a head-on confrontation, but with it's agility to climb, lighter weight, and speed, if it were a hunt, hands down the Siberian tiger would win. It has been documented that even the smaller Bengal tiger of India have been known to kill black bears, so these cats have an idea in general on the bears weak points. In one case, I saw how 2 full-grown Bengal tigers bullied an adult grizzly, one on each side as the bear stood on its hind legs, lightly pawing it as the tigers were also on their hinds legs holding on to the grizzly. Unfortanately, during the days of the Roman empire and its arenas, it was popular to pit man vs. beast, beast vs. beast, etc. We can't do that today, but just let nature take it's course. In my opinion, the best lone hunter is the anaconda, because it has no known predator or adversary other than an occasional kaiman, which is to small, and is numbers is the hyena, which in packs have been known to best even a pride of African lions.
Ok.... how about this one...
A grissley Bear vs a Silver Back Gorilla?

On the origonal question, my money would be on the polar bear, ever since I saw a documentery where they where killing killer whales by smashing there skulls in    and breaking through over 3 feet of compact snow to get at seals.
Yeah id back Matt J in that kind of tussle:D :D
As for the first question id say the tiger, cos he is alot faster than a bear.
Marty, we are obviously muuuuuuch better than bears, have u not seen the john west advert?
The guy kicks the bears ass (well his balls actually)
:D :D :D :D

Cats attack large upright targets by jumping at the chest. A 400Lb Tiger hitting a polar bear in the chest would knock it over, they then use their jaws to get grip and rake the victim to death with powerful strokes of the back legs... If thebear could crush the tiger then it would still probably die afterwards, however, Tigers are immensly stron, I doubt if the upper body strength of even a Polar bear would be enough to break it's spine if it was resisting...

My moneys deffo on the Polar bear.......rrrraaaarrrrrrgh!!!!
Oh and them there bear killing dogs, weren't actually bred to kill bears they were bred to assist in hunting them, ie they tracked, cornered and kept em busy while mister hunter blew the bears head off with a fecking great rifle.

Ha I laugh at your puny tiger, the polar bear can weigh in at 1500lbs and can move that mass to 40kph via 12.5 inch paws and 2.5" very sharp claws aiding in traction. your puny pussy would just bounce of the 2 layers of thick fur pretecting 4.5" of skin and blubber. It would take 1 blow tsmash the ribcage and remove most of it's inards. The polar bear is THE largest land preditor :p :p :p plus they look cute

ah ha, deception and then a surprise attack when least expected... just like women
Polar bear.
The size of the claws and the brute force of the upper body taking a swipe would kill prolly anything bar an elephant
