Hi all

This is one for you IT geezers!

I am currently trying to complete an assignment which requires publishing a multiple page quiz on the web. I am doing this using Macromedia Ultradev and MS Access as I found PHP and MySQL too frustrating.:mad:

My problem is this:

I am trying to find a web server (free of course!) that supports ASP as Blueyonder and my Uni server don't support these languages. The web server will need to support FTP and allow me to keep my pages/database for duration fo a month!

Does anyone know of one?:confused:

Any help would be gratefully recieved:)

I'd use my home PC, but I'm having trouble setting up my PC and am not overly keen on having my PC run solidy for a month (the duration of the marking period) without being shut down!

Electricity cost money, you know especially when using tokens on pay-as-you-go!;)

is this a uni/college project?

They should support you needs really.

Yep they should, but the lecturer is a reknowned microsoft hater and actively supports anything outside Microsoft - This incudes the assignments he sets. He recommends students use PHP and MySQL, but as I said before, this is bloody frustrating to use as it is not the most intuitive of languages to use! Also the uni servers don't support ASP as far as I know but I'll find out later today.

Seeing as the assignment specifically stated, the student can use any web scripting language they prefer to use, the fact they don't support ASP is a bit daft, isn't it?

If I can't get the web pages working the Uni servers, then I'll have to try and get this assignment up and running through my PC. All I need to do is to figure out Port Forwarding on my router and how to publish Web Pages using XP Pro and IIS.

That is, unless anyone knows of ASP supporting web servers??

I bet some other uni that does support ASP would be willing to offer your free hosting if you explain why, just to get one over your uni :p

While I prefer php/mySQL combo it is narrow minded of your uni to not offer a varied range of platforms/languages.

You've just hit the nail that myself and my mates have been moaning about for the last few years.

Another example of this is we had to design some software which we did using VB6 and they specifically said to to use any programming lanaguage we like. A week before it was due, we got round to testing it on the Uni PCs only to find the lab we were supposed to demonstrate the code in had VB5. We then proceeded to spend 3 days solid reprogramming the code!

Grrrrrrrr:mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

I'm the other way around, but I code Java / C++ and SQL. I use Javascript in my ASP code cause VB is not my cup of tea.

I'm trying to learn PHP / MySQL but because none of our customers use these (Oracle is the most common DB on unix with my clients) I dont get chance to do any work on it :( From what I hear PHP is the dogs nads...

{Homer style}
Woo-hoo
{Homer style off}

Found out that the Uni does support ASP in certain folders only so I placed my files in there and bingo!

It started working:D :D :D

I just need to figure out how to write the quiz results back to the database as it ins't doing it properly at the mo!

Yeager: cheers for the offer - I may be in touch if an emergency occurs and I need to place my files on the web quickly!

I'm using Macromedia Ultradev along with CourseBuilder and MS Access to create this quiz - It's not the best but it does what I want it to do!

Later chaps and thanks the help!
