View Full Version : Electric buffer
I'm after a little help please. Coming back from dropping the better half off at the airport, I was diverted due to an accident along some very tight single track lanes. My beautiful car now has nice scratches down both sides from the damn hedges  (God knows how the guy in the brand new black S-class that was behind me feels now :wack:)
Anyway, I bought an electric buffer a while back and finally got round to trying to buff out these scratches but its hopeless - the slightest pressure and it stops dead
A place I used to work at used one that was like a big angle grinder with a foam pad on. Used it on several occasions with excellent results (remember my S13 just after I first got it? Monkey Magic's S14 was done with it too I think) but I can't justify spending £80 ish on one just to use once or twice.
Does anyone localish have a decent one I could borrow for a couple of days to do my S14a and Bex's L200? Ideally before the Devon car show later this month!
Beer tokens would be forthcoming!
Thanks in advance

You need more librication mate, need to keep the surface damp. I use a little water squirter to keep the surface wet while polishing.
Also, I hired a variable speed polisher, giant metabo thing. £12 for a day. If you use it maybe once a year, it's a lot cheaper than buying one. You could do 2 cars in a day and do a really good job, then with some quality waxes and sealants, you wont need to do it again for a good while :)
Failing that get somebody like scott (mr_ocd) to come out and sort it for you. They have the gear and the good products, although they charge a bit, they will use top rate stuff that you and I just cannot justify buying :)
I use plenty of lube :wack: Used to work as a valeter (when needed - job was actually writing ad's for sports and performance cars) just over a year ago. The crappy thing just doesn't have enough power in it. Foam pad on my angle grinder? :D:D:D
Might be worth looking into hiring one - didn't think of that!
Would like Scott to do it but can't afford to spend unneccesarily at the moment. :( (says he who's just bought a nismo oil cap and soon some shiny hardpipes and silicone joiners! Come to think of it, don't suppose you have any left over you can spare from that job lot you had a while back? I was after it too but saw it too late - again!!)

What left over from what job?
I did my boat with AG SRP then AGP. It came up really well.
Dont use a grinder, spins to fast. Hire a decent polisher, you wont be sorry!
Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. Someone a while back bought a load of alloy piping for a project. Thought it might have been you but never mind! My memory isn't that great!!!!
My grinder is adjustable speed bbut even low speed may be too quick - was only half serious there anyway!!!
Got friday off so may well look into hiring one. Or spend it asleep....

What speeds will your grinder adjust down to?
I have used a grinder with a foam pad on once on really hard paint that was really rough looking to start with, because I had nothing else. It did come it really well :)
However nissan paint isn't exactly made of girders in Scotland, so I'd suggest the proper machine!
Wasn't me with the tube, have lots of spare parts, but not tube!
Not sure. Will check when I get home but I will probably look at hiring one.
Wonder who it was then. Hmm. As I have an idea for some custom work! Don't want to get expensive tubing as I'll end up cutting it all up and (probably) bodging half of it for the first time!
