I realise im taking a risk here and opening myself up for the slaggings im about to recieve, but i have to ask this now b4 its too late...............

Basically im a one handed (three fingers actually) typer.
and the amount i post on here is finally taking its toll.

My wrist and fingers are really bloody sore almost constantly, and 10 times worse when im typing long posts (which i seem to do all the time)

When i do type long posts and i get to the end i have to dislocate my wristy a bit till it cracks so i can move it again, and im constantly cracking my fingers and wrist.

Im thinking this is RSI (repetitive strain injury) and im wondering if anyone else has it, and if theres sommat i can do to get rid of it, or at least to aleviate it.

U see its not just not being able to post on here im worried about, its getting those spanners into the akwrd places, texting on the mobi and the fact im at uni for IT.

So if i cant sort this out then im gonna have to seriously look for a new career too.

If u think about it, almost everything u do uses manual dexterity, so just think wat it would be like if ur fingers were so sore u really really dont wanna type any more.

Ill expect the slaggings, thats cool, but if possible could u include sommat constructive in the posts, cos this is a serious problem for me.

Kev, a friends girlfriend has been off work for the past 2 months with RSI. It's not a nice condition (as you're no doubt aware).

Have you had a look at the RSI Website ? (http://www.rsi-uk.org.uk/)

Regards,

Mike.

s'all right mate, 'swat i'm for. :)

I don't doubt you or that it affects people and it's genuine.
But it's also the perfect vehicle for lazy cnuts do do cock all, you know like claiming for whiplash etc, perhaps i'm just a cynical cnut.

I'd suggest go see a physiotherapist Uni must have one, actaully saying that my opinion of college doctors is piss poor, perhaps try a proper doctor to start; try wrist supports and/or ergo keyboard, after all that's what it was designed for.
Perhaps learn to type with 2 hands to take the strain of the one wrist.

Is it just typing that sets the pain off?

My wrists lock kinda cramp like when driving long distances, have to kinda flap them around, prolly doesn them no good but eases the pain/dscomfort in the sort term.

Stop cracking your joints. It gives you artheritis.:(

Have you thought about voice recognition software?:D

Kev

Tried uni, theyre docs are just for tutors:confused:
Own Gp says nout he can do (think im gonna change GP's anyway).

Was thinking of wrist supports etc, was just posting to see if anyone else had the same problem, and had definite helps rather than me wasting mod money on useless cr@p.

Used to be just typing, but now find ive not got alot of strength for tightening things on the car, especially in tight places (mani nuts last week), and it hurts texting and carrying things.
Basically im just a pussy! (ill say it b4 another does)

I agree wholeheartedly bout cnuts that hide behind backpain etc when theres fook all wrong with them, specially ones that get money of the dole while they are scaffolding on the side:mad:

And im trying to do the two handed typing but its bloody hard, specially when i have probs doing one handed typing lol

I dont actually know if this is RSI, just kinda thought cos of the symptoms.

thing is i cant live without my daily dose of sxoc!!!:D :D :D

btw been typing this since i pm'd u, bloody slow aint i lol

Dunno if this helps...courteousy of work, of course lol.

It's got a self-help section in it, so might be of some use :)

My mate is a sports physio specializing in all this crap, and trust me, rupturing your synovial membranes is NOT one of his recommendations!

Most GP's are the equivalent of back street grease monkeys when it comes to up-to-date stuff, just because there's so much new stuff to learn! Recently qualified types are what you need (eh Tombs? ;) ) but a specialist is much better.
You wouldn't take your 200 to "Fat Frankies Ford Fixers" would you?

Apparently, RSI is a piece of piss to cure. Stop doing whatever causes you trouble and do the exact opposite. ie use the opposing muscle groups until it's better, then keep a balance between the two. Piece of piss. Just not very easy to actually implement....

My mate had EXACTLY the same problem from typing,

He ended up with a wrist support thingy which didn't really help much..

What he did find that helped loads though was one of those pads that sit just infront of the keyboard to raise your wrists up a bit along with a pad thingy infront of your mouse too.

Now what he does is rotates it so that he has the pads one week and not the next. Havent asked him about it recently but he no longer winges about it all of the time so it must help a bit.

try it, might help..?:)

I think you can get the pads from most computer/office places.

Cheers,
Luke.

Never been proven. No, it cant be good for your joints but arthritis is a disease, not a term for knackered joints.

Technically, arthritis means inflammation of a joint. Colloquially, its meaning depends on the type of arthritis. There are lots of types of arthritis that are diseases (eg Rheumatoid, Septic), but Osteoarthritis is (put simply) is wear and tear on the joints.

Sorry to disappoint, Billy, but I know very little about RSI. :) All I'd suggest is you need to develop a typing style that doesn't stress your wrists and hands. This is especially important if you're gonna be typing for the forseeable future! Work on relaxation of your hands when typing. Resting your wrists may help, but not necessarily - it depends on the best ergonomic position for you.

A mate of mine was a really great piano player, doing Jazz at Leeds Uni. He got something akin to RSI, due to an overly 'tense' style - his hands just didn't relax enough when playing (according to his concert pianist GF  ). He's now doing basic jobs in various shops, with his dreams of a musical career pretty much dead and buried :(

I'm gonna have to go away and read up on it now... :(

Haven't suffered what I presume would be RSI since using a keyboard. Have very occassionally felt a slight numbness in the hands, like a pins/needles feeling but that's happened in other random situations also. Generally my wrists are only quite lightly touching the desk so that may be helpinh.

Might be carpal tunnel syndrome. What's the distribution of the tingling?
