View Full Version : Problem with my 405 diesel

Anyone on here know about diesel engines??

Basically my 405 TD had been using a fair bit of oil recently and this morning I took the oil filler cap off with the engine running and noticed it was blowing a lot of air out of the filler neck.

3 or 4 months ago it was losing coolant but that was sorted by bunging in some rad weld.
There were no puddles of coolant on drive etc, and everything seemed water tight, this seems to point
toward it being an internal leak somewhere??

Apart from that it sounds/runs fine and holds a steady 73-80deg running temp.

I'm thinking maybe the head gasket is fooked, whatdya reckon???

I believe head gaskets like going on 405 diesels (according to my local garage).

I was having my MOT done and talking to one of the the other peeps and he was testing a 405. He said it was on it's 3rd head gasket and skim and they couldnt skim the head ANY MORE!!!

So next time that one was fooked. I assume you'd get the normal mayo stuff on a diesel when the HG goes though???

If theres air blowing out the filler then its a blocked breather again quite common on the XUD
It might be worth checking the hoses that lead off from the filler

cheers peeps, I'll check the hose thing.

What about worn rings as another culprit????

AFAIK the 1.9TD pug engine is bullet proof, I bought my...ahem...Xantia based on this, afraid I cant offer any advice, I would suggest trying the really useful forum (much like this one) at andyspares.co.uk but the damn thing has been down for a couple of weeks now ! and just when I want some advice on changing suspension spheres  if your not in a hurry I'd wait till the forum is back up and running, it is real good for advice and help.

Ok taken this from the parts screen but it's for the 1.8td
If you need a 1.9 then I'll get one done

The Xu is bullet proof we dont have many probs at all except glow plugs and head gaskets but they are obvious cos of the mayo in the expansion tank
We have customers with over 250-300,000 miles on the original engines

Another question H.

Can internal wear ie. piston rings, worn bores etc, make the engine sound different cos apart from my problem it sounds spot on for a diesel.

Thanks anyway, good to know I can ask someone that actually works for Peugeot, I'll let you know how I get on with me pipes.

It would sound different but just talking to the techs and none of them have ever seen it on an XUD. They just don't wear

Blowing out of the oil filler is a symptom of bore wear on petrol engines, don't know if diesels are the same
