Im just making up a web page for my mum to advertise our caravans in Newquay for rent and im having a few problems. Somebody on here must be able to help :)
Firstly for some reason it is putting big gaps in the text every time I press return. I have checked the paragraph options and i is in single line spacing  not sure how to solve this?
Secondly how will I get search engines to recognise my site? Will it just pick up on the words written on my webpage? e.g. caravan, rent, Newquay etc?
Hope someone can help, its driving me mad!
Cheers,
Richard

Ok sorted problem number one, I needed to press shift + enter to have one line. Just enter makes a new paragraph
Problem 2 still stands though.

You have to enter a Metatag - this is a hidden piece of text in the webpage. Add all the words to which your webpage relates to and then when people type in a search string in google for instance it then uses that Meta-tag.
There are also quite a few free programs that you fill in details and it registers on all the different search engines
Yeah, there are also quite a number of free search engine submission thingies.
The best way to do it is via a viral campaign - or, to prevent the accusation of spam, ensure that your web details are on the bottom of every email that you send with a 1/2 line piece of text giving a very brief outline of what is there. Start sending amusing circulars to everyone in your address book, the sort of stuff that you know that htye will forward on. This will get a large number of people to at least receive your address and then any collateral spin-off has to be good.
THe other suggestion is to utilise yahoo clubs, camping organisations etc etc to get listed.
Otherwise, metatags and free search engine submissions are the easiest way to go. If you've got hassle with the meta tags then email me the front age of your site and the list of words you ideally want - dreamweaver eats metatags for breakfast and puts them in far easier than any other program I've ever ever found in the histroy of ever. :)
I can give you tips which should see you in the top ten of google, depending what your key words are and how competitie they are....but then again google itself doesnt use keywords, and each search engine has different criteria for listing your page, and if you want to do it properly MUST have multiple entrances (front pages) per search engine, each page being optomised for each engine.
Anyhow, just to get you started:
Google:
1) Doesnt use keywords
2) Uses site title (the bit that appears at in the bar in the browser).
3) Uses the first four text lines of main content, so make sure you have some, even if you dont, put some in an make them the same colour as the background.
That should get you started for google....and the others, well, some are a pain in the arse and you may never get listed!!!!
