View Full Version : Broadband Q
Does anyone know a phone company who charge all in one?
I was thinking of going with Tiscali, but then discovered I'd still be paying the line rental as well. So suddenly the £27/moth 10x access doesn't seem so nice...

I use telewest blueyonder for phone and internet... permanent 1Mb broadband for about 30 quid a month and the phone is about 15quid IIRC (all land line calls are free).
Their broadband is very reliable, their technical support are also very good..... but their normal customer support are clueless.

DONT go with Tiscali, were still paying a direct debit from an account over a year ago cos no-one can give ownership to it!!
pile of poo, and were not getting far with the refund....
Im on NTL - telephone, 128k line (now upgraded to 600k), and cable TV all for £40 inc. rental
Aye, its cable if you want the line rental included.
Other wise its BT for the line rental and who ever you use to get ADSL over it.

I'm on cable (NTL) and telephone line isn't included.
But i've had no probs with it at all. yet.
I'm with boltblue - costs £27.99 per month all in. At the time I signed up there was an introductory offer waiving all charges for the modem etc. so £27.99 is all I've had to pay per month from the word go - it might be that this is still available?

im with ntl, cable telly, telephone and broadband
Same as everyone else, telewest broadband, £25/month.
But its supposed to be ~500bps, and mine is more like 116.
Anyone know if the pc can cause this to slow down?
btw i check it with:-

807.3 kilobits per second
That's with Blueyonder 1Mb tested on bandwidthplace.com. I'm running it on an old 266mhz laptop with 128Mb with a 10Mb ethernet card. It's going through my 100Mb ethernet hub to another pc which has the cable modem plugged into it. I doubt it's your PC slowing it down cuz this laptop is brutally slow but still seems to do ok on the test.

119kB/952kbit for me on NTL 1Mbit cable. NTL have recently introduced a new clause stating that 'reasonable use' is up to 1GB/day so if you're a heavy downloader or share your net connection it might not be the best route. 1GB on 1Mbit cable is roughly 2 1/2 hours at full speed. Despite this limit me and my housemates have (probably) gone over it every single day since it was introduced and haven't heard anything from NTL.....
CHeers guys - I'll check out your suggestions.
Problem is, I can't get cable as I live in the hogs arse of nowhere :( WE're not even on mains gas :( :(
As for Tiscali, I have had no probs with them at all - they have been great for me and I would personally recommend them on my experience.
If you live in the middle of know where, have you checked you can get ADSL yet?
I cant :(

Yeah, according to Tiscali I can - basically anything over standard phone lines looks good at the moment. I think they enabled it here coz of the school.
Give it a check on here for a diffinative answer...

I live in the middle of Slough and can't get ADSL! I'm within range, the exchange is enabled, but there's too much noise on my line..
I love the way that BT gleefully say "Please note: this does NOT indicate any kind of fault on your line".. Rarrrgh

This may be of interest to you then.....

Hmmm - thanks, might be worth getting them to resurvey after June time then.. Can't quite recall the noise levels, but I think it was over 60db :(
I seem to recall I'm only just within spec for HomeHighway (which I currently have)..
Still, worth a try!
Whats HH like?
Im temted to get it if I buy a house round here just to have the "use the internet and phone at the same time" functionality coz im fed up of getting moaned at about hogging the phone
Your exchange has broadband ADSL. However, the length of the telephone line between you and the exchange is too long for broadband ADSL.
Stupid ferking BT

It's been quite good for me, bar the obvious limitations (64kb being the main one! Along with disconnects if you're on a 'normal' 0800 ISP service).
These days I use SurfTime and Demon for my ISP - that way there's no disconnects, and my 'net time is still free (and there's a lot of it.. sometimes it's connected for 50hrs plus straight). A 3com ISDN router handles all the calling out etc, so it's transparent from either machine & operating system..
I'd still rather have broadband, though :) But it's an awful lot better than a modem!
My only gripe has been that, as I'm on the limit of functionality, it ocassionally ceases functioning altogether (no telephone service either)..

If you really, really want broadband, then your only options are probably going to be wireless (radio - not sure how far this has reached yet.. It's around me, but you need line of sight to the base station - bugger!), or satellite (expensive, I think BT's satellite system is £300 a month! And you need a modem/isdn for the upstream connection...)
