.... buy cheap service parts from Ebay!!!!!
Bought a job lot of "new" Pitwork service parts, cambelt, other belts, tensioners etc.
Found out last night by pure chance that my cam belt had frayed itself almost to death - and probably would have snapped in the next week or two.
Why? After much head scratching and diagnoising - we found the answer. Not the cambelt's fault either!
The new cam idle tensioners had LOAD OF FECKING PLAY IN THEM!!!! You could literally hold them in your hands and wobble the main shaft and feel the play! What did this cause? It means that when the cambelt was tensioned up, the tensioners would move at an angle and end up at an angle that was pushing the cambelt forward so that it would have pushed its way off had it not been for my carbon cam cover holding it on!
As it was - the cam cover held the belt on - much to the belt's annoyance!. If I had had no cam cover on there - the belt would have lliterally fallen off!
Put my old cam idle tensioners on with a new cambelt - and hey presto problem solved! Unvelievable the random things that seem to happen to me! If the belt had snapped, or fallen off - that would have been my freshly rebuilt engine turned into a mangled pile of scrap metal!
If it wasnt for buffy saying "whats that noise?" and me saying "not heared that before!" and the ensuing investigations - I would have been totally screwed - and would have had to Sell (or more likeley crushed) the car :annoyed:
As it was - pure luck, the correct time and place stopped that from happening. She's now running sweeet as a nut!
Lesson learned - never buying any cheap tat off ebay ever again - saving a few quid could have cost me thousands.... and wasted days of buffys hard work :whip:
