View Full Version : How come??
Our phone number is ex-directory, yet I am still getting bloody stupid phonecalls from some sodding double glazing companies trying to sell me windows cheap if they can take photos after their fitted.
I explain that the house is 2 years old and that we really do not need new windows yet, and they get all huffy with me. I'm bloody well polite to them. What the hell more do they want?
OK, I feel better now. :)
Used to get this all the time when we moved into our current house. Used to get calls fromdebt collection agencies getting really nast at times. It's because your phone number has probably been used before and then passed on to you. In my case it belonged to some low-life defaulting scumbag.
If it's a serious problem get onto BT and get them to change your number for free.
It's not a big problem. I just wondered how come they have our number that's all.
What really annoys me with them is that I am polite and they get all funny with me. I am rarely rude to people. It's not my way. :)

Oooh, just like me then :D
the reason they are getting angry is because they are not used to people telling to go away politely, most people either tell them to f*** off or are genuinely interesting.
Can't prove this BTW, just my theory:)
I just can't be like that unless someone really upsets me. Even when the Jovy witnessess come to the door, I end up standing there listening to them because I can't tell them to go away.
Mind you now that we have the dog who barks at the window, they usually chose not to stay long. :D
Next time they phone tell them you rent the house or even better that it's a council house, I bet they won't bother you again :)
Marketing & Sales companies use a random digit dialler ( does what it says on the tin ). Did you notice your phone make a "half" ring a week or so before they called ? The dialler will "test" call a number to make sure it's connected, then it goes onto the "ok to dial" list & you get some half-wit trying to sell you something you don't want.
Your best bet to stop them is this place :
http://www.tps-online.org.uk/tpsr/html/default.asp
You register your phone number with them & they inform the Sales / Marketing companies that you mustn't be called. If someone then calls you they ( the company calling ) get fined by the TPS - pretty cool. It doesn't stop all calls, but since registering with them we've gone from 1 or 2 a week to 1 every six months.
You can also register your home address to stop junk mail.

The only reply you have to give to make them f*ck off is "Sorry, it's rented accomodation"... Even if it isn't ;)
Has had a 100% non huffy no hassle strike rate.

I've always found that 'can you double glaze a grade one listed building?' does the trick.

Conservatory salesmen make me laugh, they will spend ages telling me about how good they are, but arnt so good when you ask if they can build them on legs, see i live in a first floor flat :D
Oh, and my number is apparently ex-directory.
One other thing that annoys me, every day i come home and the answer phone is flashing, press play button, nasty noise where someone has hung up without leaving a message. 1472, the caller withheld their number.
My question:
Why ring me then? You obviously have no reason to ring me if you hide your number and dont leave a message. OR, you get the hint that surprisingly during working hours, i'm at work! so ring me later if you really want to talk, EVERY DAY?! Dipsh1ts.

In the US they have a law that states that if you request that the phone caller removes you from their call list and the same company happens to call you again, they are duty bound to pay you a fixed sum by way of compensation. If they persist the fine increases.
The other thing you can do to stop this is, seeing that most of these companies withhold their number when ringing from their call centres you can now get anonymous caller ID rejection added to your phone account, this stops a suprising number of sales calls.
I always find that its good fun to engage them in a lengthy conversation about what they are selling and when they have the boner coz they think they have a sale just say "I better go and ask my Dad first coz I'm only ten!" and just leave the receiver on the side for a few minutes!!!! Then they aren't there!:D

You know what I think would be cool, accept their sale banter, book a salesman for say 8pm on Thursday, then book another company for 8pm Thursday, then book another company for 8pm Thursday, keep going until you think you have enough.
Get them all together and start with "so, talk amongst yourselves and tell me which one is best when you've finished"
This plan does have one downside, you have to let these people in your house. Me, I'd host it in my shed..........
Lets see if they call again after that ;)
