View Full Version : Pics of your Console!
I have recently purchased myself a HKS EVC4 (Electronic Boost Controller). At present i have a boost gauge in the ashtray carbon panel, however i want to make/buy something that will fit in the single din slot under the stereo. I want it to accommodate the boost gauge and the controller. The controller is about the size of a turbo timer.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/evc4.jpg
I was thinking to get one of these..
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/blank.jpg
then fit a tilted guage pod like this... (just a single one)
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/pod.jpg
then chop the blanking pate and mount the controller in there somehow..
So i would like to see some pics of stuff you guys have already done to maybe get some ideas.
Any input welcome

i ve swapped my radio round and made the rest! i ve got a turbo timer next to my boost gauge!
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e85/1ee/PICT0580-1.jpg
i ve now got a bluetooth cd player so the ashtray is usable (not that i smoke or let anyone near the car with a fag)
Thanks for the pic mate, that looks very tidy and well done  did u make it yourself? I am hoping mine will look similar. Although i will have my gauge on the left and evc on the right, because my gauge will protrude toward me a little. Is the stereo any harder to get to, lower down?? Its just that i fiddle with my stereo quite a bit, whereas the EVC, once set, will be pretty much left alone.
Pretty naff picture, but I have the EVC placed above stereo.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c200/CyberRacer08/Picture026.jpg
nice.. What did you do with your switches? Evc fits well  I also like the electronic ac controls. Is yours an import?
Hi, yeah mine is an import. I just moved the switches about so it fitted. I think it would've looked odd with the boost controller in the middle and the switches on either side.
interesting hmmm.... i wonder if i can fit the import heater controls into a uk spec s14a
whos got some import heater controls they wannna sell me :sxoc:
heres my attempt at an install:thumbs:
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj200/S14alo/P1040053.jpg
May have a jiggle about and see what the turbo timer looks like next to the EVC - may be a little 'too' much. The turbo timer NEEDS to be moved either way as it vibrates and rattles sitting where it is!
OK guys, so i found that a single din blanking panel won't accomodate a 52mm boost gauge :annoyed: So decided to make my own..
Get one old stereo and pad it out with cardboard and gaffa tape :wack:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008211.jpg
Then get some Plaster Paris..
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008212.jpg
Make a mould.. (only thought to take pics after!)
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008213.jpg
Some releasing agent :wack:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008215.jpg
Some fibre glass bridging compound.. (i know you should use matting and resin, but its messy and i already had the p40)
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008214.jpg
Lay it in the mould and let it set.. then prize it out...
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008218.jpg
One single din panel..
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008216.jpg
Ready for the 52mm to be cut out..
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/23032008217.jpg
and the EVC hole.. then sanded and painted... This is as far as i got on the wknd. More pics to come..

looks like it should work ok! preparation before you paint is the way to getting a good finish... as i've learnt
yep.. lots of work yet be done, sanding and filler primer..
Looking good mate . Sure is a lot of work! Just had a thought, you could have made the stereo surround and put the gauge where the cig lighter goes and then the boost controller where the ashtray goes but slightly raised?:wack: Just a thought.

BBB did you have much bother moving the stereo down at all? That looks very neat and tidy

the stereo is mounted in a double din 'cage' by two screws - so is the 'crap flap'
just remove the screws and put the head unit in the lower position
you might need to move some of the wiring that's below it as space gets a bit tight but there's no major problems in doing it
makes the gauges easier to read IMO, being that bit higher up
BTW - CrazySX - good work, can't beat a bit of DIY
Cool, sorted! I really didn't want to sacrifice any heater vents, so that looks like the perfect position for gauges. I had a new stereo the other week, but the BF installed it so I didn't know that you could move it down that easily. Thanks :)
BBB did you have much bother moving the stereo down at all? That looks very neat and tidy
Not really. Had to cut the surround off the Sony mounting plate as it was too large and there are a lot of wires back there so it is like wrestling spaghetti, but otherwise all good. The gauges are not obscured, but the volume control is slightly impeded by the gearstick - not an issue really.

Every one of these on here are really good! So much more work that just shoving it in to a space!!! maybe with the exception of mine huh lol
Hi Guys,
Just thought i would give you a heads up.. basically, i have done nothing since those pics cus i have been a lazy bastid, too busy pissing it up on the wknd, and then hungover and then pissing up again :wack:
However I am putting drinking aside and doing some more on it this wknd  So will get some more shots up.
I could have made a mould of the whole thing and used the ashtray hole for this and ciggerette lighter space for that.. but to be honest i just need space for my EVC and my boost gauge, and that DIN slot is going spare ;)
Thanks for your input guys.. there are some mad ones on here 'ProjectS14a' to name a few!
Quick question, i see a lot of you have got little screens in the double din hole.. what are the benefits of this? do you use it for SatNav? or just a toy?? and what size fits well? Hugh Janus yours fits very well!

mine is purely just a headunit that can also play DVD's (Film/Music) mainly for when i pick up my son we had a 2hr journey it kept him amused, but now only live 2 miles away so thats pretty much redundant, as for size I'm pretty sure they are all the same, there is a small gap at the bottom of mine which annoys the hell out of me

Hey Mate, That is a flocking superb thread you got going there :wack: Good work Dave
On a serious note, i am bit worried about the finish on mine, will take alot of flatting back and layers of paint. i may give it a thin skim of filler or maybe stopper.. i will see...
Mine however is only a din panel, so not as prominant as your panel.
That DVD/CD player looks awesome for the money.. you will defo have to let us know how it performs. i am doubtful that the sound quality will be better than my Alpine 9855r though. It would also mean i would have to remount my boost gauge and EVC all over again :D
OK Guys,
Yesterday was a long day for me, lots of hard work, tweeking, and messing about. Two things i learned were.
1. Always use a measure tape and a pencil
2. Take your centre console out of the car, it makes life SO MUCH easier!!!
I hope you guys are ready for some pictures... i may have gone a bit overkill but every picture has a story ;)
Here goes... So yesterday I get down to my mates garage at about 11am ready to do some work. I cut a 52mm hole in the panel with a hole saw and then a hole to accomodate the EVC.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008220.jpg
Then checked the gauge fits (I used Vac gauge for this which i had lying around, came in to use after about 10 years of ownership :wack: )
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008221.jpg
Then i checked the EVC hole but it was too small  After some fettling with some 80 grit
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008222.jpg
Now that the gear fits the holes, time to sort out the finish on the actual panel, did this using a flat plane type tool, it was borrowed from a mate. Don't know the name for it, but it is awesome. Takes a long strip of sand paper, but the sand paper is perforated so doesn't clog up
The Edges were a bit rough and I knew the whole panel was a bit over sized.. so some knuckle scrape later...
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008223.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008224.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008224-1.jpg
Now that I had a nice squared up piece i thought i would offer it up in the car. It was at this point that i realised that i should pulled the centre console panel out of the car.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008225.jpg
As can be seen from the previous pic, the panel fits, but in the same way as the stereo, a little countersunk, the gauge wouldn't fit as there was a bit of the plastic panel in the way :annoyed: At first i was lost for what to do. Then i thought that if I could get my new panel to extrude a little to come up flush with the original centre console then we would be in business. So i tried to lay some fibre glass in top leaving a lip. It didnt work  so a big lump of p40 in the bin and on to plan B. I realised there was enough meat on my panel to cut a lip out on the edges. So after some careful hacksawing...
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008226.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008227.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008228.jpg
With the edges removed the new panel fitted nice and flush with the face of the panel, so next step.. to make some mounting points, using the oroginal screw holes
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008229.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008233.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008232.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008230.jpg
So with the mounting points sorted, lets see how it fits...
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008234.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008235.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008236.jpg
Now I knew it fits pretty well, i was in a dilemma about the finish. I wanted it to be original as poss. I was planning to go over it with filler, then fine grade paper, then primer, then some 1200, then more primer, then rub down again (until the finish is nice) then paint with satin matt black. But then my mate suggested he had some leather laying around that i could use. I was a bit dubious at first because of the shape and the size of the din panel. I was worried that the leather might be intrusive and make the panel too big again. But in the end, it was the quicker option, so i took it. oh and the finish on the leather was real nice too!
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008237.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008238.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008240.jpg
I thought i'd better drill out the mounting holes at this point..
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008241.jpg
Then trial fit the gauge and EVC again, the EVC was a bit more of a snug fit this time round
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008239.jpg
Now that I was happy with the fit, i had to make some sort of retainer for the EVC so it doesn't fall through the hole :wack:
Some alloy strip bent into shape and a couple of screws later...
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/05042008243.jpg
Ok so its time to check the stereo still fits in its hole. It was a very very tight fit. I don't think with all the wires attached and in the car, it would have went in the hole!!
So its nearly Midnight now, and everything fits and is secure. So time to see how it looks in the car :D
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/06042008244.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/06042008245.jpg
Excuse the poor pic quality, they are all taken on a nokia n95, and it is 1230am
Thought i would put the ashtray back in this morning and take some more snaps ;)
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/06042008253.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/06042008254.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/06042008255.jpg
Overall, It took alot longer than it should hav, because of mis measurement and weather :annoyed:
Minimal blood drawn, knuckle sanded..
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/06042008250.jpg
Not to mention stinky fibreglass bridging compound!
But in the end i am very pleased with the result, a nice factory finish
I hope i didn't bore you guys and maybe you found all this interesting. To think of the end result, you wouldnt think it would take THIS much work.
I now appreciate what people like 'Petrol' Pete go through and stopping to take pics, with filthy hands isn't ideal either. The things we do for the love of SXOC hey :sxoc:
I think i will upgrade the boost gauge soon tho, an electronic ebay one me thinks!

I started with this
http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=56196&stc=1&d=1217801808
Then i used p40 to attach the stereo surround and used some body work mesh stuff to fill the big hole.
The rest is p38 (apart from the two shelf things i made to sit the apexi stuff on) and lots of sanding.
No my cars not white its indigo, but soon i should have white wheel and my roll cage will be white (when it arrives)

Got it on ebay....
but its good quality..... a skin a few mm thick of proper carbon fibre.... that i combined with my wood frame.
Jebus.... but it's tough stuff
You can buy varying degrees of thickness, weave or shine.
If anything.... I think mine is a little too shiney.... but it wont stick out so bad when i do the area around the gearstick,,, and eventually the bit around the heater controls.
Nice work there. Kudos for using proper CF too. The covers you see on other consoles always look like just that - covers. Good luck with the top section. ;)

what are the 2 what look like rca points for? (in white next to the fag lighter)
they're 3 actually only 1 of them has a cover on and the others hadn't ... the red and white are left-right inputs for me to plug in whatever i want into the car radio and the white one is a video output so if i get or borrow a bigger screen i can watch DVDs on it as the radio reads all sorts of DVDs VCDs and stuff like that but the screen is too small to watch anything on it... i'm not planing on getting any screens atm but i thought it was a usefull thing to put there...

Mate what gauges are they??? I've gotta get myself some of those :D
Apexi EL2 Electronic :)
Strange this should get bumped as I've just begain rebuilding my dash for next season.
I'm having three of the 60mm gauges in the picture above in the central air vent but I'm not sure what to do with the other two. I had considered fitting a long plate over the central vent and fitting all 5 gauges in that but don't know if that'll look messy.
Any suggestions as to where I can sit the two other gauges so it looks neat with three in the vent?
Also, any suggestions for how I would angle the gauges towards the driver slightly?
How bout you get some of these and have a play
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x249/danny4q/pod.jpg
Perfect, your my new hero. Where from?
60mm? Say its so.
Just playing around with lay-outs. This is winning so far - moving the heater controls to the bottom of the DIN slot, or maybe even into the armrest storage by extending the wires so its hidden? In the other DIN space I'd have Apexi gauge control, Profec B and cut-off switches.
I dunno - any suggestions? I like the three in the vent gap. I considered fitting the other two INSIDE the dash cluster as an alternative. One infront of the water temp gauge [most likely the water-temp one!:wack:] and the other err infront of the petrol gauge, but then I'm fooked for knowing how much fuel I got :D.

Apexi EL2 Electronic :)
Cheers fella, I'll have to keep a look out on ebay for some of those, as their not exactly cheap from any of the online stores
I like ya dash idea, but what about moving the 3 top gauges down to where you currently have the two gauges, and then mounting the two gauges in the middle below them? That way you could mount them all very close together, almost like the Olympic Rings, although obviously not interlinking.
http://londonist.com/attachments/Matt/OlympicRings.jpg
That will also free up the top dash vents for your Boost controller, ignition cut off or whatever else you wanted to fit there.
Just an idea mate:)
This is the best pic I got but this is how my centre console looks..
Will fit a Apexi AVC-R instead though.. Hopefully...

Yep, took me a while to get the steering wheel and gauges to the other side, hmmm.... :wack:
About the heater... My plan was to integrate it into my CarPC so I could control it through the touch-screen that you see in my console but I never got to it
since there just wasn't enough time this year =/
I've kept the controller for this year though and the only pic that shows it is this unfortunately..
It's between the shift knob and the kill-switch in the pic..

A quick pic of mine now the main part is complete. Consists of carbon stereo/gaiter surround, Sony WX7700-MDX head unit, repainted gaiter surround and S15 specific Moonface Racing ali shift knob and boot. Pretty pleased with it thus far.
To finish the job off I'll be sorting the rear part of the console - leather re-trim for the armrest/cubby cover, carbon wrap around the black side trim part of the console and fitment of an HKS EVC6 where the ashtray sit at the base of the gear gaiter. Should look the mutts then :)

The CF is built as a replacement panel. I had to trim a little bit of plastic underneath the switches, but other than that, it slots in place and is held in with the gear stick surround and switch panel. Fits perfectly
I got it from Kognition Design if you want one :)

wasnt hard to do mate theres only 4 screws which holds the casing together. just got to be careful when taking apart and putting back together:thumbs:.
If that's the case then I'm going to paint mine, cheers for the kick up the arse that I needed :D

it is worrying taking it apart i got abbott`s to take mine apart, as he`s done his avcr in white so i instantly wanted mine in black. before you put it back though make sure none of the buttons stick when putting it back. on both the avcr`s we done, both times the previous button was sticking.

Its taken me near enough 2 weeks to do, but as this was my first go at working with CF I didn't want to rush it, and its turned out quite well, if I do say so myself :D
I'm hoping to continue all the way up the centre console, and I want to integrate my boost gauge and the display for my EVC into the centre part.
Can I just ask, is there any reason why so many people move the head unit down when fitting gauges? Is it just to get them closer to your field of vision while you're driving, or is it just easier to fit them higher up?
So come on, we need some photo's to show you making that lovely CF centre console.
Looks REALLY good

Cheers mate, happy to :D
(By the way it's not a carbon replacement, its the original trim just sort of laminated :wack:)
Started like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/trackstar_sx/DSC01009.jpg
Started off painting the trim with a black epoxy base coat, when it was tacky laid on the carbon fabric. Once it was sitting right, used masking tape to hold the edges (they fray if you so much look at them ) and painted on the first coat of clear resin:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/trackstar_sx/DSC01095.jpg
Once completely cured, I could tidy up the egdes a bit better. Then sanded it down to knock off any high spots and key the surface (was cacking myself at this point!):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/trackstar_sx/DSC01097.jpg
Then 2 further coats of clear resin to build it up...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/trackstar_sx/DSC01099.jpg
Then just the finishing... Final trim on the edges (used the good old dremel), then wet and dry it (through 4 grades :annoyed:), and polishing compound to finish!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/trackstar_sx/DSC01119.jpg
New leather gaiter was about a tenner from the 'bay :D
Thanks for that, the only bit I dont get is the masking tape to do the edges. where did you get the sheet from?

good job, are you doing the rest of the centre now?
trackstar
07-02-2010, 22:54
My missus bought me a kit which included the fabric, came from "carbonmods.co.uk"... You can buy the fabric seperately from them too.
As for the tape, at the point where you're working with the untreated fabric its quite easy to upset the weave pattern, which would ruin how it looks. So to begin with I could only cut it roughly to size, so had to fold the excess edges over behind the trim so I didn't get the resin on them. So just used a bit of tape to keep them out the way. It also stopped the untreated fabric from fraying
Petrolhead- I will be, just planning it out first! I need a new head unit, might be safer to sort that first... Might try to get a second trim piece to play with :D
Thats brilliant, thanks for the link.
It does look good so i'm tempted to give it a go.
Hoe much of the sheet did you use for that gear surround?
trackstar

Literally just long enough to cover that part. From a very quick glance it looks like there's plenty in the kit to do the whole centre console. May need more resin and polish to do it all though!

So is this the kit you got? Good to know that the one kit is enough for the whole centre console.

Trackstar, you've done an incredibly tidy job with that. I think this is the solution for people who do their own center console builds and try to fabric/paintmatch them. This should give a much tidier finish.

thats cool alot work involved i bet
after fitting proper cage in my s14a greddy pod wont fit so i had to redone my console aswell , space under greddy will be used for cut off switches, pull cable, maybe i will put layer of carbon on top of that alluminium sheet, what do you think?

Functional! Aesthetically, I think it would look a lot better if the AFR and water temp were swapped round :)
yeah maybe, but water temp was fitted into cluster long time ago replacing useless std one, you gave me idea now, have to think about it.

The pic of the colour matched dash to seats looks awesome brings some colour to the dash. How did you do this. I would love to know the colour match and how you did it?

heres the one i made for my old car, just fibreglassed a cut up subaru top dash pod that i cut and carved to size, smoothed with abit of filler and flocked it. was a tight fit with 3 60mm gauges but it all fitted nicely, even managed to squeeze my profec in too :D

That is really nice. Will be good to see it fitted.
I've thought about modding one of those subaru pods on top of the dash to keep the vents but I'm not that skilled to do it.

Cheers dude! It Wasnt too hard tbh just flaffing around with fibreglass and filler. I was
Lucky enough to win the scooby pod on ebay too for 99p so wasnt too daunting to cut up lol.
I've got two more of these heater panels so might make another 2 ;)
