can you get geniune black piranha?currently got 2 unidentified piranha, similar to red belly but without any red:confused:
it is difficult to tell from your concise description:D but there are black Pirahna which look similar in shape to red bellied but are of course...... black. How big are they? Blacks usually grow larger than the red belly but are by nature a solitary species as they grow. So watch out for canibalism!

they could be pacu, pirhana shape but generally eat fruit and veg, but they do grow to about 2 ft
they are definatly not Pacu!! i have had piranha on and off for over 10years:p they are currently about 5inches i did have 6, three died last year due to over feeding:rolleyes: (don`t leave your mum in charge of feeding your fish) and one this year when they had to go in a smaller tank while i recarpeted my room, cannibalism the 2 that are left get on very well and don`t nip at each other:) But i want mr evil black piranha:D :D
well if they are black pirahna, I think the scientific is
Serrasalmus rhombeus, If you follow the profile of the head from the dorsal fin to the mouth is it a smooth slightly rounded curve or does it dip in toward the eye?
i know that they are not black piranha, and yes serrasalmus rhombeus are supposed to be the black piranha
ok well what about Pygocentrus cariba, Serrasalmus spilopleura or Pygocentrus piraya . Out of interest if you know they are not black pirahna then why ask if you do get genuine black pirahna?
I reckon its this! Pygocentrus piraya
