Been to PTS again today for my regular pre-season upgrades :)

The bumper was damaged by a suicidal rabbit recently so that was coming off for (another) trip to the body shop

Impact pulled the bumper away from the wing causing it to sit low
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250027.jpg

Lack of support from the wings caused front the brackets to tear slightly
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250028.jpg

Near-side took the brunt of the bunny

JJ removing the offending bumper

The oil cooler is being fitted properly. This is The Car Clinic's "effort" :annoyed: Sadly, Chris' Riv-Nut tool died halfway through so the "after" photos will be later in the week.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250031.jpg

I need more high speed stability so Chris is going to make me a front undertray as the first step in solving this. There's going to be a splitter too which will hopefully decapitate any rabbits who decide to try and wreck my bumper :)

My original Apex FMIC is being replaced by an R32GTR cooler and custom pipework  Will be using 3" stainless all the way through with as few bends as possible. Also going for a custom intake pipe and Apexi filter as I'm tight for space due to the more direct routing of the hot pipe.

Filter was a bit grubby!!!

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250033.jpg

Old intake pipe goes 3" > 2" < 3" which isn't ideal
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250034.jpg

Waf-er thin rad plus cabletie -fest fan "assembly"...

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250035.jpg

Chris :notworthy sussing out the best route for the cold pipe. Washer bottle will have to be relocated but hopefully the battery can stay.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250041.jpg

No photos of the custom brackets yet (they need welding and painting but here's the money shot
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250043.jpg

Pretty good fit for the bumper hole  but room for improvement before it's finalised. FMIC core will be touched up before final fitting.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2250042.jpg

Should be done by the end of the week. Going to remap afterwards too, so the map is spot on

I like them even more when they're on the car  Chris sent me a little teaser yesterday. Can't wait to see it all together now! It's pretty obvious that it's going to flow so much better than before so I think it should be noticeable when driving :)

Spent Friday afternoon/evening at PTS trying to get it all finished. Had Chris, JJ and new guy Ryan on the case plus me :smash:

Oil cooler was fitted properly during the week

Pipework was back from the polishers. I got a semi at the sight of it! It's much better than the old pipework, there's only one tight 90 degree bend in there.

Induction pipe

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2290061.jpg

Koyo fitted with bracket for fans. Chris is going to make a bottom bracket and weld a strip onto the top of the top bracket which should look good and add strength.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P2290068.jpg

Don't have photos of the splitter yet but it's cut out and going to be prep'd before fitting.

The bumper was back from the body shop who repainted it and repaired the damage. It looks great but is still a crap fit due to the poor quality of the kit. The undertray will make it uber strong though which should hopefully prevent future damage.

Washer bottle still needs relocating and the rear ride height needs to come down a touch. Even a 7:30 finish on Friday couldn't get all the work done so I'm picking it up next week.

Me to, manifold will end up in the bin one day but have to prioritise. There's access holes to make oil changes possible

I think I've done away with the misfire but I changed a few things at once so I need to reverse the changes until I work out what it was :)

The undertray isn't that heavy really, someone asked Chris how heavy his was and he picked it up on the end of his fingers so not bad considering :)

The undertray hardly took any time, the majority of the time was taken up by the pipework but it's so worth it :smitten:

Not decided on the rear yet. Think the front end is causing most issues so sorting that first. Will see how the rest feels when it's done. On the verge of bolting a BGW to the back....

Spoke to Chris today and there's a few little jobs to finish off. Washer bottle relocation, bottom fan bracket and something else :wack: It might be finished tomorrow but I've said to fit it in around his other work. Fingers crossed though ;)

Have decided to leave the splitter off for the time being until I sort out some downforce on the rear (BGW time then) to keep the car balanced. Not sure it's a good idea to have less lift and more downforce on the front end with a bit of lift on the rear, especially when chasing people round Paddock Hill Bend  :wack:

stevec
07-03-2008, 14:22
could you not put a gurney flap on the back?

you can buy little lip spoilers for things on ebay. I had one on my Mazda6 and have one on my Bora, the Bora gets very dirty on the back end now, It may be placebo effect but it does feel more stable.

The BGW option is ok but I have read that a gurney flap gives similar downforce ad one with almost no drag compromise, christ knows how that works but strange things happen in vortices..

I wish I had run mine without the brushes on a track day just to get a bench mark.
my old 200 was well and truly stuck to the track or road in all conditions.

see ya
steve

Parker
09-03-2008, 22:25
Any idea or links for where to source a gurney flap? Would prefer something a little less F&F...

Did talk to Chris about just using an undertray and he thinks to make it work properly, I'd have to loose the tank and maybe the exhaust which would be a bit impractial for a car that won't be trailered.

Last photo (for now!) from yesterday when I picked it up is the new home for the washer bottle. It's in the rear offside corner hooked up to the rear screen washer pipe. The spout is chopped down and will be used as a filler funnel :)

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P3080077.jpg

Been testing it "a little" yesterday and today and although the roads have been a bit wet I can confirm that 80-90 leptons feels more confortable than it did without the undertray

The turbo doesn't feel any laggier than before with the bigger pipework and if anything it's a tiny bit quicker to spool. I think I need to turn the boost controller down though as I hit 1.42bar this afternoon  That was fun

Managed to damage the bumper every so slightly already  but it's just a stone chip :annoyed: Might fill it and touch it up myself.

Found out the MOT is up so booked one up for Friday PM. Bit of a rush now as it's not strictly MOT-worthy at the moment...

Went to wire a resistor into the front indicators which are "JDM" 5w jobbies. That went Pete Tong so cheated and wired up an extra 21w bulb to the rearlight units and stashed them out of sight. Voila, normal indicator flashing again (for the first time in four years...)

Tomorrow night, it's sidelights and numberplate time. I feel a bodge or two coming on :D

Parker
04-04-2008, 14:38
Sat in the garage belonging to the guy who MOT'd it last year. He's got his own outfit now and hasn't started MOTing yet so it's going to someone I don't know

Spend the last two nights fitting sidelights, numberplate lights, front numberplate and a few other bits. Also turned down the fuel pressure to help with emissions.

Mildly crapping it as there's a crack in the windscreen I've just found, a little rust but nothing serious (AFAIK!) and possibly bad emissions...

It's all good (assuming the misfire etc gets sorted).

Mmm, I would like racing but I'm pushing the budget massively already :wack: Cage, slicks, petrol, entry, all the safety gear etc wold be too much. Maybe in a different car one day ;)

I get to race my boat every week and that costs sod all :D That will take up the majority of my time during the summer I suspect.

Bit of a quick update because I need sleep badly.

Wing - fitted, awesome and attracted positive attention from a young lady already
Splitter - also fitted. Works amazingly well with the wing. Really stable at high speeds
Brakes - nearly sorted, most pad build-up removed
Mis-fire - sorted by mapping. Needed lots of advance. Was running really strongly, massive power (over 300bhp for sure) and no sign of det.

All went really well until the #4 shit itself at the top of 4th during a mapping run. Dipstick blew out so oil everywhere. Lots of smoke. Bad mis-firing. Oil in the bore. Either a knackered HG or piston. Praying it's the HG but will know tomorrow.

Cheers Ben :)

Also, had a play with Chris' new toy, an AX22 data logger/accelarometer/g-meter thingy. We took some wind resistance readings before the splitter and wing went on and iwll repeat with them attached to see how it's changed.

He also made me do a standing 1/4 mile which came out as 14.8 seconds IIRC. Can get into the 13's without any problems with a decent start :)

Arse :indiff: I've melted #4 piston and written off the block :annoyed:

Head's off and there's a couple of small det marks on that piston but nothing serious so it looks like it just got too hot. We were pushing the car pretty hard...

PTS have another CA with a knackered bottom end so that's apart and looks ok so my bottom end is going to be attached to that with new shells, rings and HG. That should be done today with the new parts arriving tomorrow when it'll be rebuilt and refitted then we need to map it with slightly lower boost and a tiny bit less advance to make it safer.

Might be some long days ahead as it needs to be built, mapped, tested and run in by Monday and we've got work on Chris' car to do as well...

Minor updates from conversations this afternoon.

The engine and donor engines are out of the cars and in bits. The donor has a good top end. My bottom end is ok but the shells (ACL) were a bit dodgy so we've got a new set coming along with piston rings and a HG. That lot should be here tomorrow morning.

I've got the day off tomorrow and Monday morning plus Saturday for an unknown amount of time. Chris is confident of getting it done and is up for putting in the hours. He's been an absolute legend (even more than normal  ) with this and that's the main reason I'm not pissed off and kicking the car :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy

I found a company on the web that sold draught excluders for huge doors like industrial unit roller doors. they cost me about £100.
there should be plenty of info on other threads rather than crapping up this one.

I have a good CA in my Garage so if you do another one I could sell you that matey

3:30 - Engine in
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g81/tomparker200/2008%20Trackday%20Prep/P4110146.jpg

Took a couple of hours to plumb it in and hook up the gearbox (their 2 poster ramp is a bitch for taking gearoxes off so the engine had to come out seperately)

Parker
11-04-2008, 22:11
5:30 - Engine fired up fine so we took it up the road for a shakedown. Promptly blew a boost hose (we're running it in race style :cool  ) so we fixed that only for the oil/water heat exchanger thingy to snap  Spotted the loss of oil pressure so killed the engine and coasted into the workshop entrance road. At least I have matching oil leaks on the left and right side of the bay now...

6:30/7 - Car back up on the ramps :wack: Broken thingy removed which is a bitch of a job and the one from my old block is ready to go on.

Cue another 6:30 start to get to the workshop for 8

More updates tomorrow hopefully :)

Det didn't ruin the old one, the marks are so tiny and might have been a result of the piston melting. We've taken some timing out the map to make it safer though, don't want to push this engine as hard as the old one ;)

Right, another 6:30 start  meant we were at the workshop early. Making a nasty habbit of this!

Camera battery went flat so no photos of the offending oil filter hosing :whip: but cleaned up the block, salvaged a gasket and got the new one in.

The car was to be run in using a method for race engines so none of this poncing about on light throttle up to 3k rpm :ghey: although we did deviate from the plan slightly and fired it up on the ramps to check for leaks purely because we have no time for a breakdown.

That was all fine so I went out onto the road and gave it maximum load up to 5k rpm then backed off which is supposed to suck up oil and lubricate everything. No idea if it works but did it for 20 minutes anyway whilst staring at the guages for any sign of a problem.

That went fine so Chris sent me out to check the fuelling at the top end so I went out with the wideband display and topped it out in fourth with 25 miles under it's belt  :wack: :smash:

The map was fine and the levels are still good so it's back to PTS on Monday for an oil and filter change and a trip to Brands

Photos of the BGW and splitter will be forthcoming but it looks hard as nails and kind of reminds me of this (if you squint...)http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/graphics/2007/02/17/mfaston1.jpg

Parker
13-04-2008, 10:41

1 trackday down :D The car (including the newly built engine) survived an evening at Brands Hatch!

The fluid levels were good and it pulled well despite the :ghey: spec exhaust. Unsurprisingly, the Nur Spec failed the 102db noise limit in spectacular fashion with 110db... 10 minutes with the spanners and the track backbox got me through with 96db at the cost of some lag :(

The brakes were the only real problem giving judder despite being skimmed and rubbed :( I lost a lot of time so I think I'll speak to Dan about them.

Anyway, photos are what people want so here's the new aero package

Marine grade plywood , treated with two coats of something and then painted by yours truly :D

I should say that it makes the car really stable at high speed  I've got loads more confidence in it now.

Sertes is now taken 15mph faster than last year which is really handy when playing with 4wds in the damp

Well I thought I'd post an update as I did some actual work on the car at the weekend

The gearchange issue that I've had appears to be down to a bolt missing from the clutch pedal assembly bracket. The bracket is bolted to the car which stops it moving about. With that loose, the bracket was moving instead of the rod which disengages the clutch.

Haven't tested it out yet as I haven't had time to charge the battery but it might be a step closer to being roadworthy again...
