Whats the 5 best sounding combustion engines and why?!?

My five favouritiest sounding engines in the world ever are:

1) Rolls-Royce Merlin Aero - a la Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, P51D Mustang. The most emotive engine note ever. The sound of victory. Makes the hairs on the back of my neck tingle every time

2) Audi UR quattro Turbo 10v - another sound of victory. Offbeat warbling and chissing. Just soooo glorious on the road

3) Ferrari LM flat plane crank V12 - Splumpf. Close cylinder harmony.

4) Nascar V8 - For pure noise and aggression

5) Mid Eighties Suzuki RG500 GP Racer - two stroke, square four, equal firing pulse, four pipes. Beautiful wailing note in double stereo!!

For me, i reckon its this little lot:

1JZ GTE (from Toyota's Soarer, Chaser, Cresta and Mark II series, my favourite Inline 6.. The roar!)
4AG w/ Carbs or ITB's (16v or 20v.. The deep bassy induction tone cant be beaten)
20V UR Quattro Engine (ive no idea what its called, the sound of 5 rules!)
13B-REW ****el (FD3S RX7 Motor.. Bizarre and glorious, rev it till it brakes kinda sound)
Ducati Desmodronic V-Twin (Sounds like that Sebulba's Pod Racer from Star Wars.. My Dads 748SPS was amazing, i used to shit my pants when he came past me and i wasnt expecting him)

Along with anything with the chatter of opening wastegates!

1. 600cid Hemi w/ 1471 Blower - running nitromethane 0-300+ mph in less than 5 seconds.
2. RB26 - just sounds racey, loud, and turbo induction.
3. MTI 383cid LT1 Stroker w/ T-Trim Blower - eats 114 octane like mad
4. 2JZGTE w/ Single Turbo Upgrade - mad turbo whirr!
5. MTI 422cid LS1 Stroker - my vette runs 9s all motor on pump gas, does yours?

3. Chrysler Hemi - Remember the General Lee
4. Ferrari F355 - Behind me at 160mph on Thruxton Circuit.... Fantastic

Can't think of another 4 but the most incredible engine I ever heard was in a Ferrari 375LM at Goodwood. I was standing right behind it when he fired it up!! When it was revved it did the "diaphram/chest compession" thing which made it hard to breathe!!!
Sounded amazing, all I could do was grin!! :D

Oh yeah, another is whatever engine the Vulcan V-bombers had, that is the loudest thing I have EVER heard.

Oh and the 7 litre engine that the Demon Tweeks boss used to run in his Ford Galaxy in the historic touring car Championship. It sounded superb on full throttle going up the Druids at Brands!!

3. TVR Tuscan - they just keep getting better
4. Sti Scooby with a non-standard exhaust - waaaaaaaarbbbb!
5. Renault F1 Espace (formula 1 engine with an exhaust, sounds like a manic hoover)

Oh - and the Merlin engine too - forgot about that.

I live near Biggin Hill, and a couple of summers ago I had 4 Spitfires/Hurricanes fly overhead pretty low. I'm used to seeing assorted wartime craft fly over for the airshow, but 4 of these rare beauties was unusual.

To my surpise, they then circled, and were joined by 3 more Hurricanes/Spitfires, and flew overhead again, lower this time. The sound was immense.

I couldn't believe it when they all circled *again*, and were joined by another *four* Spitfires/Hurricanes - and flew over head again, lower than ever - couldn't have been more than a few hundred feet.

The sound of those 11 thundering engines only a short distance above me, just as they would have been 60 years ago, has remained the most awesomely glorious and moving sounds I have even heard. To see almost a full squadron of those famous fighters, lovingly restored and back in the air where they belonged, ringing the countryside to the beat of their giant V12's, was something I'll remember for some time :)

In no particular order

-Aston Martin Vanquish's V12 unit
-Impreza's flat 4 with a sports exhaust system
-Ferrari 250LM (or any classic ferrari with a V12 to be honest)
-Porsche 911's flat 6 with a sports exhaust system
-Oh yeah and my Chimaera's V8 with a sports exhaust conversion at 5000rpm :D (I swear I heard it shout "come on then, you cvnt" when I floored it through a tunnel)

Straight 6 engines sound quite nice but they lack character...

Christ Keith, thats just brought back some old and very fond memories! i lived virtualy at the end of Biggin Hill runway when i was a nipper!! i loved sitting in the field at the end of the runway just listening to all the diferent planes taking off and landing ( when they had the air shows) the moast awsome thing i can remember was a Buccaneer (jet) made me fall of the gate! came over at about twenty feet! and you can't hear them comming! i'm sure the pilot was pissing himself!:)

I was at Le Mans 2000, with grandstand seats right across from the pitlane exit. The most awesome sound I have ever heard from a vehicle would be the Panoz LMP-1 trundling down the pitlane on the speed limiter. It sounded like an enormous thunderstorm, only louder, and when he floored it onto the Dunlop curve... Simply incredible.

The Jag V12 in the Lister Storm is also a pretty brutal engine, and I'd agree with Pazza about the 1JZ; genuinely frightening!

Ferrari / Lambo V12's - any I don't mind :)
