Three simple steps...
1. Clean away any rust and debris
2. Take one tin of underseal
3. Paint everywhere:D
Before.

Not sure whether it is the best paint for an engine bay but looks ten times better and will never rust again:wack: Got a few areas to touch up to finish but I am happy with it. Not flash but practical(ish).
Only concern for me is that the heat from the engine may cause it all to melt. Have I done a silly thing?
your thoughts....
PS - thanks Zarc for giving me a hand today, couldnt have got this far with out you. Now I have finshed the welds on the chassis rail we are good to put the engine in on Sat:thumbs:

underseal wasn't the smartest move

It does look like I hit a crud oil tanker....
I'm no engine bay expert, but wouldn't it have made more sense to take as much as possible out, wire brush/sand back every piece of rust in the bay, degrease and prep, put some POR15 down, then topcoat it with some chassis black? Ideally with a compressor (or rattlers if needbe). I'm not sure how effective your method is?

Is that stuff actually paint, or sticky underseal?
and will never rust again
Oh yes it will. Unfortunately:(. Only next time you're going to get filty working in the engine bay.
And Danny's right, it doesn't look good I'm afraid.
I wish I could think of something encouraging to say:indiff:
Thats going to be fun to work on :wack:

Plus it would put off burglars and kids climbing on it :)

maybe you can find some fluff for that flocked bay look
Line the whole bay with damp kitchen roll and scatter in some cress seeds. Reckon it would look mint in a couple of weeks:thumbs:.

Man - it's going to cost you a fortune in swarfega every time you work on that!
Ah well! sh1t happens!
We all make mistakes  :D
Might be a good idea to try and take it off with solvent thinners or something.
Cornwall
29-01-2008, 17:58
Think Im gonna use a combination of heat gun and thinners. Welding anywhere near previous painter underseal made it melt and very easy to wipe off.
Shuoldnt take very long to take off.
Any recomondations on what replace with...
normal 2k paint is fine or some peoples have used hammerite.

de-greaser works well for removal as does thinners. Get a LOT of cardboard or old carpet to catch the drips though and a crapload of rags to wipe up with
Black hammerite smooth with a brush FTW
I think my original idea of removing as much as poss, wirebrush/sand back all the rust, degrease and prep for POR15, then put some grey POR15 on it (it acts as primer too), then topcoat with some chassis black is fine?
I think we have found a contender for the 'bennett award' at JAE this year :D

The Kierans are a Scottish thing, and really do exist! ( The Englanders have to be really 'special' to get one.)
The Beeeennnneeeett award is TBA!
And :

And as for the underseal.... Steam clean it off, repaint black smoothrite after a derusting session. Sorted.
thats just brightened up my day. :D
lol i can't wait to see this underseal react to the engine bay heat hahaha quality :D

Do the Bennett and Kieran awards actually exist, and is there some sort of process for putting forward nominees?
The first Bennett award was awarded last year to the one and only John Beeennnettt for managing to torch his own car :D :wack:
It was decided to have it as an annual award at every JAE from now on :D If you have a serious nomination for acts of stupidity they should be forwarded to a staff member

oh dear........, i'd buy a box of rags/paper towels, a sh*t load of the correct thinners (or whatever dissolves underseal) and a couple of boxes of vinyl gloves, you're going to get dirty, veeeeeerrry very dirty.
Good luck. :wack:
Jesus-Ninja
30-01-2008, 19:26
Actually, it's probably not set that much. If you have a jet washer, whilst the engine's out, you could probably remove most of it, and then what's left attck with some solvent.
I'll send up some prayers for you, buddy - you're gonna need them!!!! :D

30-01-2008, 19:27
judging by the rate the underseal on the bottom of my car falls off, if you leave it a couple of weeks, it'll have fallen off on it's own
That underseal is rubbish even on the underside of cars, it traps water and rots the metal behind it.
Thanks for shariing this one with us though.
I think if you had an oil leak in that engine bay, you wouldn't be able to tell.:wack:
Priceless hilarity - even my wife thought it was funny, and she knows f**k all about cars :D
Fair play for taking on the chin though fellas and not throwing your toys out of the pram
In hindsight it's probably better to ask on here first before trying something 'new'...
I thought Idiot guides are ment to be FOR idiots not BY idiots ;)
Brightened up my day too.:D
Hat of to you for taking the ribbing lol. Your obviously a good sport!
cheers bud.

i've used waxoyl underseal for a few years now and have never had a problem with it, although i do strip back to paint and bare metal if rust present paint then underseal. or if it's on bulkhead, chassis rails, sills, wheel arches i always stonechip it.

So spent the rest of the day under old car taking off exhaust, prop shaft and undoing all the engine and gear box mounts. Weather permiting may even put the engine in the new shell tomorrow.
Thanks again for the ripping in true SXOC fashion :sxoc: promise to think before before using paint ever egain:thumbs:
No please dont promise to think. You have provided the club with a good laugh which is a good thing.
Even better that you were able to sort it quite easy:thumbs:
I'll send up some prayers for you, buddy - you're gonna need them!!!! :D
Even God will LOL at this :D
Most apt thread title ever ;)
On the bright side, you'll never have to crawl under the car when you drop a nut because it'll stick to the side of the engine bay :D :D :D
Hahahahahahahhah.......That was truly hilarious while it lasted! You should get an award for that.:D:D:D
Great work on getting that shite out in the end there.:wack:
I'm surprised it wasn't that much work to get it out, bay looks clean!
You have a flat tire too..
It's also smarter to put the bonnet up on the widest edges with some towels beneath the edges, the front fin can deform as its not that thick/strong. Its also more stable that way
glad you got it sortedish, although it did provide much hilarity!
in future... STOP! THINK! then get torn in like a rat up a drain pipe, otherwise the threads might not have the same giggle factor lol!
