Well guys,i have decided to take the plunge! This year is going to be drift practice at as many days as i can, getting the S13 set up, and intending to start with the EDC next year, get my licence sorted etc.

So far, kit stands at

Transit County (LWB 4x4)
Twin Axle Trailer
S13 - Several Mods already, just need FIA seat and battery cut off to fit rules!

Now do you think its going to be hard to get sponsors for the year, im hoping to look early. I want to try and promote safe drifting these days, keep seeing too many accidents around our way with drifting, people hitting things, so i want to get it off the road, and on sensible tracks.

Will be hard to get sponsors early on mate. You need to prove yourself first. Try local part-worn tyre places, they're your best bet to begin with!

Free/CHEAP tyres for a big sticker on your car. Can't argue with that!

Good luck with that. I know guys that have been drifting longer than me (and are better than me) and still cant get an EDC license. :wack:

No offence to yourself fella, it's good to see someone keen from down south looking to compete, but I see lots of people nowadays thinking that they can just join in any of the drifting championships with a bit of practice.

Sponsorships are a pain in the ass (take a look on driftworks about sponsorships - theres a thread there about it somewhere - very amusing). Getting a license it more difficult than it looks and the rise in competancy of the competitors is massive now. Being competitive is much more difficult now than it used to be.
I remember drifting a roundabout several years back made you 'drift king'. Nowadays you need to be able to do it with your eyes closed with one foot!

Seriously fella, good luck with it, I do hope you suceed, but unless you're very good already, take it easy

start off with BDC am/pro this year, and then see how you get on, BDC pro is still a very good level and could get you sponsorship.

Most impostantly, dont drift to get sponsorship, just drift, have fun and if you deserve it then sponsors will approach you.

Lou, no offence mate but I'd wake up and sense reality a bit.

1 year of practicing at what.. 5 to 10 events ain't gonna make you EDC standard, not even BDC, some people have been drifting properly since before it was even a glint in the public's eye and they still can't get into EDC.

Not to mention the financial cost. Even if you could find a company stupid enough to sponsor a complete n00b you wouldn't break even, and with breakdowns, tyres, entry fees, fuel, etc, etc, etc it's a lot to shell out for. You only posted this morning you'd lived on 700 odd quid for the last two months, ok, 2 weeks ago you may have said you got a new job, but at the same time you also said you wanted to get a house.

Having dreams and aspirations is great, but lets face facts, And this isn't meant in a harsh way, I've had many a great time drinking with you at events in the past, but monkey's can drive better than you from all the crashes you've had :p, you can't drift and you change your mind more than a whore's panties go up and down. that said.. prove me wrong and I'll look forward to seeing you compete.

Their no harm for drifting for fun at events, but I think your priorites are wrong

The average drift competition for me:

Entry Fee £90 (odd)
Allow at LEAST two tanks of fuel (so thats about £120 nowadays) - depending on the venue
Tyres - mostly free, but errr, Ive bought new before for cost, so allow £240 for 4 of them and use the 'freebies' as emergency runners.
£20 Food and drink all day/night. Yeh you can take pack up, but its never enough and its nicer to have summat hot to eat or cold to drink at some point.

So call it a round £500 for a day.

Hmmmm, not quite as accessable as it used to be is it. ANd bear in mind, Ive never even got on the podium. OK, some do it with less budget - but Im kinda right on the point now where I wanted to go EDC but wasnt 'quite' consistent enough.

ANother reason why Im quitting comps. If I wanna go drift, Ill go to a practive day like I am tomorrow. The costs arent reduced by much tbh, but you get more track time and its FUN - which comps arent so much anymore.

You'd need to go through the feeder championship anyway, which is BDC. Which equates to beating all the other people that have been doing this for years, refining their techniques, who ALSO now have to go through the feeder to reach EDC. There's a LOT of talent in BDC Pro now...

Good luck, but yeah, don't set your hopes on immediate EDC glory.

As others have said you will find getting a place in EDC very difficult, to give you an idea we have a driver who already has a D1 licence but we are struggling to get a place.
We are currently on the reserve list and thats with a 650+bhp full monty s15.

No offence meant but you will struggle to get into EDC with a stage 1 s13. As the top level drift series I get the impression they are looking for fully prepared top notch cars and drivers.

You will be lucky to find anyone to sponcer you with parts/discount, let alone giving you money. The car will have to be in top condition looks wise to attract decent sponcers.

Lots of good realistic advice in this thread.

E does not equal easy

No, but E1 = easy

But yeah, good advice in this thread. It's not quite as simple as trailer + S13 + a few skids = sponsors, EDC victory, bitches, a slot on mtv cribs and world domination. It's not 2003 anymore... Give it a bash though, get into BDC this year and see how you do.

Even BDC is already full for round 1 !!

BDC guessing then it british drift championship!! Kewl kewl! Well i have a sponsor for tyres, and i have someone who can do all the mech side of stuff, very good friend who is willing to help. Just thinking about other things. Fuel i know it going to be expensive, but its all good fun!

Matt, ive worked out i can live on £580 a month, and still live nicely on that, with the luxuries i like, which gives me around 1.1k leftover, not bad really. So im hoping to be able to do it next year, hence the saving thisyear, and plus, got my fingers crossed on mortgage side of things. Would be nice to have a house, but the place im in at current is lovely, so why pay extra at the moment, wheni can have some fun as a young'un.

Matt_S

Wow. Id be happy if my mortgage was £580 a mth, let alone be able to live on that amount :wack:

im currently renting! with two mates, a nice 3 bed house with garage and double drive i pay £200 a month inc council tax!! so its not bad!! then insurance on the 200 is £41 a month, fone is £40, and i can live on the rest for petty and food happily!

I'd suggest doing a bit more research into UK drifting before jumping into the top level ;)

so young so foolish
go to some practice days then go watch a few comps then do some more practice days.

Lou

watched lots of days, and been to a few practise days! only problem at the moment is getting the s13 legal, should have it done payday i hope though, this payday was spent on the transit, needed something reliable and decent as a towcar!

I've been drifting 4 years on and off and im just ready for what used to be Euro Drift Pro-am.

I can't even see my ass getting to any comps this year due to insufficent funding. :(

Here here all that money and heartache I can understand why most people can't get into the comps (I watch Ade trying all the time and I wonder if he is sane) I've never been near a comp - Despite my aspirations I'm realistic about this being a hobby and as such it must never overtake my world financially there are other things to worry about. Also working weekends meant I'd never be able to get anywhere even if i wanted too.

I love the sport and its a lifestyle thing more than anything 3 months of the car sitting around can be forgotten with just 30 seconds of being sideways. I love playing and furthering myself so I would be sensible and continue to enjoy the practice days and look to have a play in the one off events or dip a toe into BDC (when its matured) at some point :)

Be realistic above all and DONT get into debt or you won't be here in a years time or even own a car.
