Found this when looking for parts for my metro run around. Very amusing. For a 1.1 it must be a real speed machine. ;)

I cant stop laughing. If only they knew about real cars.

ow dear:eek:  .. why do people do that? I say a little 106 pug (standard 1.1 or something) with two double rear pipes going into one!! (you could see it from behind too, cos the car was so high).

The GTA metro is actually a 1.4 (but that is no excuse);)

I could understand the guy posting pics of his car if it was a 6R4 but those tail pipes does he really think he gonner go any faster.
Which was fastest the MG tubro or the gta, I know they were both shite..

1.6 MII Escort (no that's showing my age), it was great for getting the back end out and cheap to repair when it went wrong. Sold it and bought a 2.0 Laser Capri.
Both cars were as mint as I could keep them and it was frowned upon to "Trev up" motors....oh those were the days.

Looking at the first couple of pics of the metro I thought "hmm tidy looking car, looked after etc." until you see the pics of the back.

Harry Enfield mode engaged:

Mr. GTA Metro owner, a tidy example of a latter day attempt at a hot hatch it may be BUT if you think that fitting a set of twin "DTM Stylee" exhausts will have the teeny's creamin their nickers I'd say NO !!, get them things off there and save any money you were going to spend on future fruitless frivolities and put it towards your next motor !!!

Harry Enfield mode disengaged.

Metros are unspeakable crap. I can remember years ago going with my mum and dad to the local BL dealer (as they were called at the time) to look at the then new Metro with a view of buying one for my mum. Dad managed to blag a 1.3 for the afternoon. It poored down and the thing leaked like a seive. When going round a corner fast petrol was spuing out of the fuel flap and there were more shakes and rattles than a shaky rattly thing.

Whenwe got back to the dealer, he asked my dad what he thought and (in a packed showroom) he replied loudly "This car's a load of fcuking sh!t and a death trap!"

Needless to say we didn't get one. Bought a Polo instead.

dont knock metro's...... I had a metro GTI 16V (MPI model) as my 1st car. Stuck on a straight through exhaust a 1600 block and a lightly ported head along with a K&N and had myself a tyre sreading monster that went round corners and killed 325i sport BMW's....... great fun cars and cheap insurance

Pull the other one, it has got bells on :D

And don't try and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, 'cos I used to own an MG Metro Turbo at the same time as a mate had an immaculate E30 325i Sport and there was *no way* I was keeping up with him.

PeteC, Have a read up on the K series engine. They were used in caterhams till just recently, and have a look at the motobuild website. They specialise in tuning rovers. Then you will see where im coming from.
myn did 0-60 in 6.5 secs
and had a top speed of 140, running on a rover 416 gearbox.
tour right though the MG Turbos were not all that fast, but could easily be tweeked upto 110bhp as they used a garrett T3 turbo.
cheers Pete;)

03-03-2003, 15:05
a T3 on what, a 1 litre? 1.3? that's daftly oversized

RsPete
03-03-2003, 15:09
I know, they were originally going to be built with 125bhp then BL found the gearbox's kept on blowing up after 10,000 miles or so, but they kept the T3.

Had the n/a MG Metro as my first car. I loved it. It wasn't fast, and I didn't expect to win many races. But it was just good fun to drive and surprisingly never once broke down!!!

Plus I could caine the life out of it and it wouldn't complain :)

Having said that I loved it, that was at the time. I'd never have another one now.

p.s the MG Turbos, could be quite highly tuned. There is a metro/mini racing co. near me, and they bored them out to 1.4, with huge webber carbs and ran the tubby at ridiculously high boost pressures. Dunno how fast they were, and I'm pretty sure they weren't road legal as all the ones he did were track cars.

Although the funniest I saw was a stretched limo mini he had :D 4x the length of a normal mini :D

I'm not denying that K series engines are good (except the 1.4's have a reputation for blowing head gaskets), but I still think you're gonna have some serious trouble from a 325i Sport.

Especially in the mid range when the little K series runs out of puff and torque is what counts...

P.S. There is no way my little Metro had a T3 on it  Imagine the lag on a 1.3!

RsPete
03-03-2003, 16:07
the K series I had was a 16V engine, The cams kicked in at about 3500 RPM. myn was a 1600 and revved to 7500RPM with the weber alpha ECU. they all suffer from head gasket problems if you dont use genuine rover gaskets and skim the heads.
cheers Pete
It was the E30's I used to beat. I couldnt keep up with the E36's after 70ish

Marky Boy
03-03-2003, 16:42
As much a sack shit Metros are in genral they can still be a good laugh. My one's a GTi16v with the K series engine and it is just a good laugh to drive. The boy racers in their saxos always have a go at it. Its so much more fun beating them in a metro. It would be embarising getting beat by a car that cost less than your wheels.

Still Id rather my 200.

The best part of my metro is the Nissan 200 fuel pump cos i couldnt be arsed buying another rover one. Also the exahaust is held together by a tennents can. And the shells held together buy filler. Bodgetastic. :D :D

Marky Boy
03-03-2003, 16:46
Oh yeah and the fuel tank leaks. Id like to think of it like the SR71. When it gets going the heat caused from the air friction helped seal it. But nah so i just filled the holes with chemical metal.:D :D

cheers Pete;) Unfortunatly, I owned a MG Turbo myself, they actually have 105bhp out of the box so I think you could acheive more nquite easily. I on the other hand was too busy trying to keep the car on the road to do any mods. I killed two gearboxes and two tubbies in 25,000 miles and it was a genuine 70K motor with FDSH when I bought it.

I bet mine didn't have that much when I had it - it was so fooked! It had 49K genuine with FSH when I bought it, it had just had a new tubby, I had to change the HG after the first couple of weeks, and I reckon the timing chain was loose too, 'cos it ran like a bag of sh*t

Still loved it though, the little thing had so much character, bless it's little cotton socks ;)

Had one for 6mths only 49000 on clock but what a crok of shit it was spent more time off road than on. My only smile was getting rid of it it was like driving a fiat all tinny noises and no stability around corners. Just regret not torching the fuuuuuuukin thing. I blame myself for buying it but needed transport for football and was only 17 at time. Goodbye AustinRover....

The bodykit, the graphics, everything, it's all completely standard :D

After it was stolen and crashed, I sold the engine to someone who was going to transplant it into his Mini

Maestros were quick if you could control the scrabble off the line. Unfortunately they felt ill at the site of a bend and were as well put together as a wet cardboard box.
