whats a half decent motor thats

4x4
cheap on insurance
less than 10 sec to 60
preferably with turbo

was thinking of a 1988 celica gt4?? dunno what insurance is like tho or the performance but im assuming its failry rapid

or was thinking of seira 4x4 2l jobbly but lacks a turbo, not sure what to 60 time is tho

don't worry im not defecting, just thinking about needing a gay weather car ( i.e. that dodgy snow the other week, i know its a little late to be thinking of it, just forward planning to next winter)

I know it doesn't fall into any of the conditions that you mentioned, but, we bought a Jeep Cherokee when we got Shelby so we could go up on the moors with her. That was great fun, I loved it. Offered the best ride out of the 4x4's.
4 lt engine, automatic. Really lazy drive.:)

I know, I'm being no use again  .

If you want to deal with snow and have a run-a-round ya would be better of with a cheap FWD car with skiny tires... That why I bought a D reg golf 1.3 and put 155 tyres on it.

4WD preformance cars may be fine in the dry and wet but generaly the tyres are to wide to deal with snow. I remeber when topgear toook am audi quatro production car out on snow an it was kak coz the tyres were so wide to just slid over the top of it... then again with skiny snow tyres on....

It depends how much you have to spend.. I have very little :p

yeah thought about it a bit more now, was asking a bit much when i was tryiong to keep it as cheap as poss.

4l! think thats gunna be too high on my insurance, thx n e way.

basically i want a throw away car something less than £500 if poss wud stretch to £1k

been looking @
2l sierra
1.5 civic coupe
1.5 briliant MPG!! think thats around 10-11 to 60
1.6 colt or lancer
1.8 galant

i want roughly 100bhp and for it to do 60 in around 10 secs be as cheap as possible to maintain and run (mpg) and have just enough umph to over take slightly iffy situations ( some bigger ina 1.6 leaon or soemthing accelerates while ur trying to over take ( the bugger he was only doing 40-45 on the by pass then when i tried to over take they accelerated, just enough to make me back off cuz a car was coming, if it weren't then i'd carried on bastid!)

The other thing to remeber is the slower the other car is the fater the 200 feels... MAN go I know this.

Driving up a particular hill in 3rd inthe golf ya need to raly rev it in 3rd to beable to et it into 4th with out it slwing down!

The 200... sat behin a bus uo the same hill, drop it into 2nd, lost the back end, get it again, change into 4th..... Og the smile on my face :D

IMHO 200 + slooooow 2nd car for when the 200 aint good i.e. snow.

What???
We checked out all the 4x4's we would consider and compared to the Range Rover, Shogun, etc, the Jeep was less wallowy (which I hated about the Range Rover). It had plenty of power and looked good. Plenty of room for the dog and drove wonderfully. What more could you want.

I loved it and would have another one anytime.:D Don't like the front of the new ones though.

Hayley.

By the way, I will work for commission.;) :D

Here a few other options.

Mk3 Cavalier 4x4
XR 4X4 (You might be able to find a turbo technics twin turbo one)
Subaru Legacy turbo or non turbo.

As far as driving in the snow try a volvo or saab as they live with it 24/7.

The 2.0 Sierra XR4X4 is slow as feck, but the 2.8 or 2.9 on the other hand will do 60 in about 8 seconds and corner like a dream (albeit with a lot of body roll).

You can pick a decent one up for £500 or less. Tempting? The only problem with them really is the bloody fuel consumption...

You've already got performance car.. why bother getting a performance 4x4?

Just get yourself a Lada Niva Cossack. They're cheap, easy to fix , relatively reliable and will get you out of any sticky situation regardless of weather. They'll go anywhere a "real" off roader can go despite being very low-tech. Stick a set of bull bars, spot lamps and side steps on it and they actually look quite good. Parts are cheap and it's actually good fun to drive despite it not being very quick. It'll take a more modern Fiat lump if you fancy an engine transplant. Would make a great summer project just in time for the snow next winter :D If i had a bigger driveway i'd get one myself.

Dan,

On this note did anyone see the new Volvo on Pulling Power I think it was? They were driving it up bloody big snowy hills and it was loving it, pure offroading on snow and it was amazing. Then he took the T5 out on the snow and was trying to slide it about but it hardly budged.

Cheers,

Richard

If it's a car for just bad weather then you shouldn't be concerned about the performance cos less power=less chance of wheelspin, but I realise you will be driving it a bit more than when it snows so you have to compromise.

That said I'd forget the performance and get something like an early Suzuki Jeep (soft top, a bit cold but good for summer too) or a Lada Niva Cossack, both 4x4 with large diameter skinny tyres. I think Fiat might have done a 4x4 Panda, which would be good, but then again I could be just imagining it:)

Oh, and a turbo? You definately don't want one of them in the bad weather. If you're going to get a 'performance car' to use in bad weather (contradiction in terms imo) then go for the 2.9 4x4 Sierra, what you need is plenty of grunt low down in the revs for driving in snow.

what about a mazda 323 turbo 4x4, not sure how much they go for but might be worth a try

I also say go for the Lada, there's no better 4wd throw away car than one of those Niva jobbies.

You don't need brakes in a Niva, you just come to a halt by bouncing off inanimate objects.

Calibra Turbo.

Had one, loved it, the transmission did not go bang and cause the end of the universe.

Fast as fury with cams, pipe and air filter.

You need to know how to drive to get the best out of em though.

:D It is a Lada:D and like I said, high performance is the last thing you need in the bad weather

How about this for a coincidence? I was followed for a while by a white one this morning:)

It's not 4wd I know (but I tend to think that on days when the weather really is that bad I'm gonna stop at home anyway) but I've just bought a 1991 Merc 190E 2.0 as a tatting about car. It's cheap on insurance, does 60 in less than 10 seconds and feels like it's built like a bank vault. It also cost bugger all.
