View Full Version : On holiday and too much rain =
I got bored and decided too make a start on my car early this year.
So here's the plan. Sort out rust in engine bay first.
Firsly strip out as much of the ancilaries as I could without removing the engine ,
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/FRONT1.jpg
then.
Removed all the seam sealer first and found ALOT of rust underneath it. So cleaned it up using DEOX GEL , took several aplications.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/RUST2.jpg
And then its time to spray some high zinc primer on it.
will be watchin this what ya got planned
Sort out all the rust first...
Then do a full color change
And finally fit a bigger turbo + inlet plenum.
Should keep me busy over the winter..
lol yeah i should think so. you goin for colour you was talkin bout when i see you?
Was there any evidence of rust behind the seam sealer before you started? More pics of the effected areas would be useful :) Keep up the good work
There was a fair bit of surface rust under the seam sealer alot more than I expected, but nothing had rotted through.
Sorry but all primed now so I cant get anymore pics :(
All the rust done now and a couple of coats pf zinc primer. plus welded in new metal around battery tray as quite bad there.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/prim1.jpg
Well apart from a little blowing in required on the front corner, it has come out well.. I have decided to go for a pure white.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/ENGINEPAINT1.jpg
See how easy it will be too keep it clean :D
shit you done that fast looks good how you get rite down back of the engine? whole car that colour now?
If you remove as much as possible of the pipes / wires etc you can get around the engine quite well,
Only the engine bay done atm
Next interior..
really does look a good finish. jus aerosols?

keep up the great work I will be watching and trying to pick up some tips along the way.
No I used 2K pure white. You get alot better finish that way and the paint is harder than celulose..
Top job :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy
Some more progress, intercooler fitted and radiator + sprayed up front bumper support bracket..

very clean, i do like nice clean white engine bays.
Wow, you must have one of the lowest post-per-day rates ever  lol
Lovely bit of work it has to be said
Started on the rear today and decided to remove the seam sealer to check for corrosion after what I found in the engine bay, found several small patches and a couple right at the rear that had split apart at the seam.
So out came the Deox gel again..

Looking good  Keep up the good work and keep us updated.
yeah it looks really good and really clean
Was there any sign of rust behind the seam sealer in the boot before you stripped it? Keep up the good work
Was there any sign of rust behind the seam sealer in the boot before you stripped it? Keep up the good work
Unfortunatly no, there was no signs of rust anywere. the seam sealer was put on quite thick in the boot. So there's a small amount of weight saving after removing all that.
had the rear windows removed today , cleaned of all the sealant and checked for corosion, all OK..

Fitted one of the rear chargespeed wings today.
I dont like the way it flares out 50mm at the top and then goes down to nothing at the bottom.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/sidewing2.jpg
So I have been toying with the idear of stretching the bottom out to suit the top approx 50mm.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/sidewing1.jpg
What do you think.
Ps.. Bucket seat option in orange..

How much will you need to space the wheel out to get it look right? And how does it look with the door shut?
How much will you need to space the wheel out to get it look right? And how does it look with the door shut?
I have got some 10J rims to go on the rear and they will need a 20mm spacer to bring them to just inside the top of the arch.
When the door is shut it will just look as flared out at the bottom as the top. hopefully

:clap:looking good mate are you spraying the whole car white or just the inside? keep up the good work and pics!!
The whole car is going to be done in white. Once i have bonded the rear quarters on.
Loving the white, would defo paint mine white if I did a colour change/shell build.:)
I'm really liking the rear arches, do you have any more pics. The car will look very nice in white. Are you putting a kit on it, if so which one. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more and more updates.

The rear arches are chargespeed, which i am going to flare at the bottom. I am going too fit the original side skirts back on with a little modification, I want it too look original'ish.
Is this the first time you've done this sort of thing?
I've got no indication of rust anywhere on mine, but i'm tempted to strip it down and see what's hiding underneath then giving it a good coating.
Should look really good in white, keep up the good work
first dibs on buying this car if it comes up for sale lol!!!!!! lookin very nice
thats looking nice. love white. top work

No its not the first time I have done this, but it was a few years ago.
I fitted an X pack kit to my 1975 Capri 3.0 GT. It was white aswell !!
Maybe im thinking of the good old days
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/100_1075.jpg
not a good pic but you get the idea..
As with the rust under the sealer you may be lucky and not find any but you cant tell untill it is removed..
A bit more progress made.
Thanks to Petrol :sxoc: All the engine bay brackets are now plated..
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/engineplating.jpg
Also the rear quarters are now on and nearly ready for paint.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/bonding20.jpg
As you can see I have flared them out at the bottom by 40mm to give it a 'fat' look
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/bonding21.jpg
Also I have started on the front bumper by filling in the indicators and opening up the front by 40mm to allow for more cooling.

Quick question; Apart from sealing the Seams :wack: what is the point of seam sealer? Will you be replacing it all afterwards?

Seam sealer stops the water from seaping in to the joints.. I have replaced what i have removed but I have tried to do it a bit neater than nissan did:smash:
Awesome work, you do bodywork for a living?
Will be interesting to see what that front bumper looks like
That looks mint mate, what wheels are you going for?

They are 8j front and 10j rear deep dish hockenheim style wheels. No pics yet.

Thanks m8, I dont do body work for a living, just picked stuff up after messing about with cars over the last 20 years.
Started priming her up today, a couple off layers off primer filler and then a bit of flatening to finish..

Got to mod the rear bumper aswell !! Was hopeing to have her on the road in April not looking like it now

nice project
Managed to get some paint on it today, 2 coats worth.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/1coat1.jpg
Just need to flat it back and then 2 more coats will do.
Finally starting to make some real progress...
That looks real nice as always. BTW I take it you are doing it in your home garage, how are you dealing with the fumes, and what sort of compressor are you using for the spraying.
cant wait to see the end result
Yes I have used silkaflex and about 50 self tappers.
When you used the self tappers, did you remove them after the silkaflex had set and fill the remaining holes?
or have you ground them flat?

i am using a 100 litre compressor and some specialist vapor masks for the fumes...

I used countersunk self tappers so i could leave them in position and fill over the top..
Some more progress,
Whilst waiting for the paint to harden off I decided to fit the new turbo, Gt3076. After having it powdercoated..
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/newturbo.jpg
Also I have started on the rear bumper, have removed the fog light and smoothed in the number plate surround,
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/rearbumper1.jpg
Here's the final pic off where I am up to at the moment, just started flattening the paint with 1500 wet and dry.

Loving the blended rear plate surround, if i ever made a custom bumper for myself, it'd have the fog light and reflector flush aswell, hate the black surround, makes the bumper look :hurl:
Looking good  After you have flatted it back I would leave it a couple days. The paint will still be soft and flatting it back allows it to dry quicker - but you probably already knew that :)

Thanks for that
That is awesome. Might I suggest a nice addon, it's expensive but I think it would look just right in your bay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110237574592&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001
They also make an SS washer tank, but the "aussie" one is also nice (and cheaper).
Looks good, but I like to be able to see the fluid level without taking the lid off, way to lazy for that.
Some more pics off the front and rear bumpers nearing completion..
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/rearandfrontbump.jpg
and a pic off the modified side skirts 'kicked' out at the ends to acomidate the modified wings and rear quarters.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/modsideskirts.jpg
Started test fitting rear splitter from SRB. Had to cut it in to three sections due to the flaring out off the rear quarters. Starting to whish i had not flared them out and just bonded them straight on, as I would have had this finished long ago. But its done now.
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q168/nismo9/200SX%202007-8/srbsplitter.jpg
Looking good mate! I'd like to see how your rear bumper turns out I'v never seen one done like that before, and I have to say the engine bay looks spanking! Hope mine will look as good one day lol!
Here's a pic off the rear end nearing completion, well chuffed with the rear bumper. Rear splitter needs a bit of adjusting but its finally getting somewhere.

hi was that sprayed in your garage? if so what things did you doo spray it in there? also did you do it allm in one go?
Hi m8 , as you can see from the white floor it was all sprayed in the garage. I was hopeing to have it on the road early april gut due to the fact I have had too strip it down so far and spray everything seperatly, it has taken so much longer. Still should be done end off May.
That is really nice, top job. Have you done the front bumper, am looking forward to seeing it on the car. I like the idea of taking the indicators out. Top job keep it up
Nice one Chris! been waiting to see that bumper sprayed up and its stunning!
car looks awsome in the flesh too, should look sweet with those wheels on her ;)
good luck on the assembly.... hope you got a good memory :wack:

I was just about to ask a similar question, is the number plate surround custom or a modified original??, would love to see a couple of close up pics if thats ok?.
I want to make up something custom to replace the standard surround, the bumper needs spraying and i hate that big lump of plastic on the back. :whip:
dan mkii
19-05-2008, 21:51
great minds ahh? lol
This is how I did the rear bumper.
Remove numberplate surround
You then have to cut down the surround to fit snugly inside the bumper, you have to cut off the fog light parts. Then cut about 10mm all the way round out off the bumper if memory serves me wright.
I got some 4mm abs plastic and cut it out to fit where the fog light holes are.
Then using some abs plastic as backing strips screw this to the inside off the bumper and the plastic filling peices and surround. Also bonded in place using seam sealer.
This holds all the parts flush.
Then with a sanding wheel rough all surfaces and fill with flexible filler.
Then it should look something like this

Whats an underdrive crank pulley?
An underdrive crank pulley is a pulley that is smaller than the standard pulley in diameter.
It runs the ancillaries ( alternator ) slower so they take less power from the engine. In theory..
