Hi guys,

Just checked out the parkers guide for the UK Toyota MK2 MR2 N/A, it says there is a 2L MR2 with only 118bhp? I thought all the mr2's got the 2.0 litre 16v lump producing 150bhp+, surely this engine isn't a 2 litre given that the 1.6 litre in the mk1 MR2 was around 130bhp.

Could someone explain this terrible beast made by Toyota, it's got me

BTW I'm not thinking of getting one (not a non-turbo anyway ;) ), just being nosey.

Cheers,

Dunc.

HI Dunc

I think the answer is weird as well, I looked at these cars before I got my 200 (I made the right choice though).

I think the non GT one which are the ones without spoilers are 118bhp or something like that. 0-60 in about 9 sec+

Then the GT ones with the spoiler and optional T-bar are 136bhp. 0-60 in 8 secs.

Then the GT 1994- (The ones with the nicer rear lights) are 150bhp. 0-60 in 7.2 secs

Then the imports:-

MR2 G-Limited a little faster than the GT -94 and have folding wing mirrors and optional Air-con. 0-60 in 7 secs.??

MR2 GT 200+bhp turbo nutter. But be careful on the handling can be deadly. Also watch out on the old insurance as what with import insurance being about 25% more than non-import. That makes this car about group 20 insurance. But 0-60 in 5.8secs :D :D

I would stick with a 200 and put about the spare £1k change into mods and try getting 280bhp and you will p1ss all over them.

The original post is right. When they first brought out the mk2 MR2 they had a low powered (2.0) version with about 120bhp. The whole episode was a disaster as the handling was also sh1te, so you should only buy MR2's from k/l reg onwards as the handling is much better.

I think the 118bhp engine was only on sale for about 2 years max.

The 118hp one is called the 'coupe' and is w@nk, do not touch with $hitty stick.

The 158bhp (i think) is pre 1993 (rev 1 + 2)

The 170 odd one is post 1993 (rev 3 on)

There is no real world difference in performance between the 2 NA cars as the lesser BHP model has slightly more low end torque than the newer one.

Turbo's

200bhp pre 1993 (rev 1 + 2)

245bhp post 1993 (rev 3 on) different Turbo 0-60 in about 5.3 (I've got this one).

Basically the stuf about cr@p handling is a load of shite, they're only dangerous when you drive em like a w@nker.

If your getting one go for the Rev 3 or newer.

see www.mr2dc.com for loadsa info.

BTW I might be selling mine if your interested????

Thanks for the info guys, the thing that gets me is how did they manage to get only 118bhp from a 2 litre engine? Its almost impossible, even the old pug 205gti's were 115bhp from an 8 valve 1.6 litre! And the previous 1.6 mk1 mr2 had more than 118bhp and that was also just a 1.6 litre, WTF

Dave, don't tempt me to buy a turbo  , I'll just doing some future planning :)

Go on you know you want it.

 shiny black, T-bar roof, leather seats, 226 rwhp, new tyres, luvly jubbly

I don't want to sell it but I would if someone wanted it at the right price.

Its not getting used properly you see.
We've got 2 dogs so whenever we're out and about we have to (and want to) take them with us. If you picture the scene; sun shining, open road flowing before us, dogs in the back egging me on to drive faster all in a 405 deisel estate:(

Plan is to sell both motors and get a 5 series touring Beemer and a bag o shite diesel thing to get r lass to work and back, but in no rush. It'll prolly sell better in the summer anyway.
