Those of you into martial arts may be interested to know that I took part in a Thai Boxing interclub event on Saturday and it was furkin great fun.
It was my first taste of competitive fighting,
light(ish) contact and no decisions, but I tell you what, its bloody frightening.
We got there at 11.30am and I didn't fight till 4pm!! so I was shiting me pants for over 4 hours, this leaves you feeling drained and ready for bed, woke up as soon as I got in the ring though.
I wieghed in at 100kgs and ended up fighting a guy about 8" shorter than me (poor bugger), the ref had to keep telling me not to go so hard which meant I couldn't really open up on him properly. Well pleased though, I got it on video and my form/technique looked good (if I do say so meself ), I only started 5 months ago so I'm fairly chuffed.
Doing another at the end of March, I'm going to try and be a bit more ruthless this time though, mwuhahaha
Anyone else done this sort of thing?? What was your experience like??

One of the guys I train with is pretty handy - i've still got the bruises (emotional anyway) from the first leg kick he gave me - It's great fun but doesn't do much for your looks - especially if your opponent fancies neck wrestling :-)

Yeah me and Amy (Spirit) have been to a few competitions for Tae-kwon-Do and you can smell the adrenaline.
It will be better the second time round and just wait until you can open up on people.
Well Done.
Dan,

Yeah mate, I've been doing Muay Thai for nearly seven years so I know the thrill of fighting in the ring..... aswell as the shittin' yerself before it :D .
You're a wee bit heavier than me at 100kg tho' (bloody 'ell that must be super-heavyweight division  ), I usually fight at 64 to 68kg. You must be fookin' tall mate! I'm 5'10" and I'm not anorexic :p !
What organisation do you train with Simta, Sitnarong? I train with the Scottish Thai-Boxing Association (STBA) in the Nai Kanohm Thom camp.
I've got an amateur fight at the end of March so I'm training hard for that one.
I'm also in the midst of setting up a Martial Arts Retail store. Once I've got things rolling I'll send you a catalogue.... and get you a nice discount if you want anything ;) .
Keep training hard mate.
Jonny

I've got a mate who runs a couple of TKD clubs here in the midlands - if you could drop a catalogue to me I may be able to send a bit more business your way :-)

'm 6'4" which is tall I suppose but this means I'm a "light" superheavy, which could be a disadvantage. I'm going to try and put on a bit more bulk down the gym.
A catalogue would be cool, cheers :)
I train out of badcompany gym in leeds, under Richard Smith, who are you fighting btw?

Seriously tho' whats the Martial Arts scene like over in Texas, are there any Mauy Thai clubs that you know of?
Ever since watching 'Walker; Texas Ranger' I have this idea that all people from texas wear cowboy hats and do Kung Fu  :D!
Dave, don't know who I'm fighting at the mo' , It'll probably be a knockout competition tho'; if I win the first I'll get sent in again against another opponent.
I've done two fights on the same day before (3 x 2 minute rounds) and I could barely stand at the end due to exhaustion and severe bruising to my thighs and shins  ...... still won it tho' :D .
Do you watch or record Night of Combat on Channel 5 (tonight at 00:30 or thereabouts). There are thai boxing fights on every week.
Gaz, I'll get a catalogue out to you when they're done ;) .
Cheers,
Jonny
Nice one.
Watch out tough cos its quite addictive. I fought on/off for 5 years but make sure you avoid using the elbow if you ever come into conflict on the streets- ive seen some bad injuries in my time. I miss it a lot cos work now dictates i cant go in the arena anymore(have to look the part etc).
hope you do well...:)
ps watch out for the biters, and i dont mean mike tyson.

kin ell m8!! I didn't know there was such a thing as 'winner stays on' fighting.
You've got to be fit to fight one bloke never mind 2 in a row, jeesus christ!!!
I try to watch the stuff on TV but invariably miss it.
It pi$$es me off that cricket/snooker/darts (YAWN) get primetime coverage and our sport gets a 1am sot on ch5, its fuked up that.
Good luck with your brawl anyway.

Yeah it's a shitty timeslot but at least it's getting some coverage now. A few years ago there was nothing!
I should get a copy of my fights on video this time round. If I do (and assuming I don't get humiliated ;) ) I'll try to get it hosted and put a link up here.
Cheers,
Jonny
PS. to make it to the final I'll have to win three maybe four bouts..... I think I'll be taking a dive after the second fight :D !
PPS. Do you do gradings with your club Dave? Just curious.
dave_s13
19-02-2003, 14:19
Yep they're doing gradings next month I think.
I don't think I'm going to bother though, its fine for someone thats not intending to compete as it gives them something to work toward but I think I'd rather save a few quid and test myself in the ring.
TBH I think the money required for a grading session would be better spent on private tution with the instructor.
When you start up your MA shop try and see if you can source (or get made up) superhero Thai shorts; things like spiderman, xmen....stuff like that. There's loads of demand for stuff like that but no supply you sell em all day on Ebay if knowhere else.
Things a bit like this

Just a thought.
Good luck with your venture m8, if you can get your prices down to www.blitzsport.com levels but provide a more user friendly ordering system you'll be on to a winner.

Thanks for the tips mate, will take them onboard ;) .
Same here btw, I trained for two years before I started grading. I decided after that point that I was going to stick with Muay Thai and train to become an Instructor, which I should achieve before the end of the year (fingers crossed).

Do you have to be assesed and attain a recognised qualification to do that then??
