I can't have another one, much as I would like it, I jsut don't have the space. But Tim and others who like them...
Go on - it's free and MoTed!!!
Yeager,
Come on mate, let someone without a car have it:)
Starionman,
Tried to ring, but an answer phone came on.. Will try later.
Any first thoughts?
Cheers,
Tim
Spoke to the lady on the phone, it's a runner but sounds like some dodgy turbo related problem. Last service the fool stuck ordinary oil in not synth and it's been running shit ever since.
Got TAX till Aug on there and she wants the cash for that. I got the wrong Christchurch and didn't realise it was all the way down on the South Coast, so i might not be interested now, depends what happens today (my S13 wont start :( !!)
Yours if you want it...
Yeah, thats the same reply I got from her.
She said that a new turbo would cost around £1500:eek:
I thought that the area was in London... Not bournemouth:eek:
Oh well.. it might pay me to go down there and drive it back..
Might cost £1500 if you pay someone to take out the old turbo, recondition it and put it back....
Sure you'll be able to get a second hand one
LOL @ you two thinking Christchurch was in London:D
I put a recon turbo in for £300.
there are plenty of others kicking about from other owners.
A clean should sort it, with oil flush and new gaskets.
I am seriously thinking of going down their tomorrow (hopefully with the approval of a day off work from the boss:rolleyes: )
The only thing I am worried about is getting back??
The Tax doesnt bother me, as I am able to buy it off her.. 6 Months worth.
StarionMan,
She wants to give it to a enthusiast. Thats one of my concerns, I dont want to drive down there and find that she wont give it to me coz I am only 22 years old and dont really know much about the car?

I'm 20 (nearly 21) and have three of the buggers...
Why can't you always have wanted one, but never had such a good opportunity to procur one? You admire the looks, love the handling characteristics (you've driven my 1986 NB 2.0 on a track) and it is an aspirational car.
Plus you enjoy the mechanical side of life, so will be happy to get down and dirty.
If I hadn't got a total shedload on I'd come with you :(
you've got me number anyway

hmm I was also hoping to get my hands on that car, but like you say... I already got one to eat up my money :):)
On the phone she seemed like a really nice lady, she openly admitted to bombing down the *private roads* everyday at 120mph (indicated). If you present yourself as a responsible kinda guy who's genuinely interested in making her baby run smooth i'll think she'll be happy to let you take it.

Can't be much wrong then...

Apparently the non-synth oil onyl causes problems when it's in traffic, it starts loosing power and eventually dies.
Sounds like it needs an oil change FAST. Although if it's got problems in traffic, I wonder how on earth it's running smooth when it's flat out
Starionman,
Just out of curiosity where are you from in the UK?
Coz IF i get the car tomorrow. It might be a good idea to meet up?
Cheers,
Tim

What would you recommend, if I was to pick it up tomorrow?
I cant do an oil change there? would it be better to put in decent oil and hope for the best until I can get it back to kent?
take some mobil one, and something like slick 50. Give the level a little top up if required. SHouldn't need too much, but a little oil treatment can't go amiss..
A tin of petrol treatment won't go a miss either. Use Optimax and NOT LRP...

So she would rather give the car away than be bothered to change the oil!?!....or is the ashtray full as well?
;)
Right,
Spoke to the woman and I am collecting the car tomorrow :D. How ever she suggested that I do a full oil change and replace the shite oil stuff with some Mobil 1, and I will take some Slick 50 aswell.
One problem, I havent a clue about doing an oil change?
Does anyone on here know or *roughly* know what to do?
The problem is I need an answer by 5-5:30ish, coz thats when I leave work, and I dont have a connection to the net after that.
ANY advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks people,
Tim.
Very easy...
You'll need....
1. 4 litre tub of oil
2. socket set (or if Starionman can tell us what size the sump plug is, you'll just need a spanner of that size)
3. Something to drain the oil into (pan, and then a container to take it away with)
4. Would be wise to put a new oil filter on as well.
then
1. Jack up car
2. Put oil pan under sump
3. Remove sump plug and let oil drain away (give it 10-15 minutes)
4. Check quality of oil by putting some on your fingers and rub your fingers together, your looking for how much "grit" there is in it. Also it's worth putting a small amount in a glass or plastic cup, swish it around and then hold to the light. Look at how much light passes through the oil and you'll also see it's consistancy.
If the oil is pretty clean (ie no\very little grit and of smooth consistancy) then you're ok to just put new oil in. If it's very gritty, and lumpy it's going to be worth cleaning the system with "flushing oil". Although this would be an arse on her doorstep. Your call.
5. Remove old oil filter, this could be messy so try and stick something underneath.
6. Replace sump plug, drop car back on it's wheels.
7. Throw new oil filter on, cover the seal with some oil first as well.
8. Undo oil filler cap... and um... fill her up.
Not sure how much those engines need, Starionman might know.
REMEMBER TO PUT OIL CAP BACK ON :)
9. Fire her up and let it run for a few seconds, listen for anything noisey and be ready to shut down the engine fast if something sounds wrong. Should be fine tho...
Simon
Hmm
Think it takes about 5litres of oil, it certainly can swallow 4litres of Mobil one without blinking :(
As for the sump size... pass. Never done one - have always had it done by garages along with other work (seal replaces etc) as I don't have the time or the space.
15mm would be my guess or 13...
To be honest, I would recommend popping into a local garage (pref NOT kwik fit) and having it done there and then. WOuld make life a lot easier for you...
Take some piccies! I wanna see!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right, I've just had a look at the American 2.6-litre manual that I've got.
It looks simple enough. Warm the engine, remove the drain plug, drain oil, new plug, new oil, put cap back on.
Except that the diagram is nearly impenetrable and round the wrong way.
In addition, I forgot to mention - Starions have a plate covering virtually all of the botton half of the engine. Makes it a bugger to get under.
Oh, and the sump capacity on the 2.6s is appartly 3.8 litres. However my 2.0 takes 4.0-litres oil happily and still the pressure is a little low...
I'm afraid I'm going to stick to my previous recommendation of get a small garage to do it. I really don't know enough about oil changes as I haven't yet had the pleasure of needing to do one...
Bloody car is always in the garage at the time of the change interval (resealing, turbo, brake units etc) so I tend to get them to do it...
Sorry mate... :(
Thanks alot for your help Yeager and Starionman. Very much appreciated. :)
I aint got a camera handy, however I've got my Nokia 7650, so that will have to do...
Yeah, I will take some pics, but wont be able to post them just yet, coz of phone gone a bit funny:confused:. its been disconnected:confused:  - long story.
However I will be able to take pics and save them for later.
I think this is gonna be fun tho:D
I wil post up Friday and tell ya how things went.
Cheers again guys.
Tim
Don't bother with the slick 50 Tim
I too would suggest a short drive to a Kwik fit or something with oil and filter in hand and pay them a tenner or something to change it.
