View Full Version : Anyone owned something quicker than a 200? Comparisons?
There are a few people on this Board who have owned Pulsars, Cossies and even Fiat Puntos.
My question is, how does the 200 compare and, more importantly, do you miss whatever you owned before?

Had an MR2 turbo before. I kinda miss it, imo the looks were great, and I loved the handling and engine/turbo noise comming from just behind you.
But the 2***** is more fun :)

used to own a corvette before, but all i can say is once you've gone turbo, you can't go back to N/A :D like the looks one the vette...but love the handling and turbo on the 200......(hate posi rear end, only good for smokeshows and burnouts...horrible for drifting ;) )

Well, I just sold my stock 94 WRX scoob.. gonna go back to S13 200sx ownership.
94 WRX
Good things
WRX was undoubtedly the quicker car is most situations. It was VERY easy to drive quickly. It just went wherever it was pointed without question. The suspension was rock solid and you always knew what the car was going to do. Steering was well weighted which made fast direction changes seem effortless, yet still provided the right feedback. Traction off the line was tremendous purely down to the AWD. It had plenty of low down torque so it would just pick up and start to shift very quickly regardless of what gear or how many RPM it was at. Another good point was that the car was 8 years old and didn't have a spot of rust on it. The noise of the boxer engine was to die for. Some very good specialists around so plenty of knowledgable folk to help out with the technical stuff.
Bad things
Interior was appauling (makes Nissan look good). Ride quality was bone jarring. Loads of wind noise with the windows down.
Outright speed and acceleration is not as good as you might think. Not a particularly easy car to mod (though there are some good ones around). Loads of money needs to be spent to get serious power. To increase the power from 240 to 360hp (by 50%) takes a lot of effort and money. Not the easiest car to work on. Boxer takes up a lot of space in the engine bay, add in the 4WD and things start to get a bit messy for the DIY enthusiast.
The average scoob owner thinks scoobs look great... Not IMO... it's a vile looking car with too many vents (i didn't realize that the 2 side vents are blocked till i bought the car). It's just subarus attempt to make an ugly saloon look sporty. Put some alloys, a splitter, some vents and side skirts on a mondeo and it'll look better than a scoob
There were dozens of things that go wrong with imprezas (and in my case.. most of then did). These are not just little minor irritations ..... imprezas eat clutches, rocker gaskets leak, header tanks split, turbo pipework splits, dump valve fail, AFM sensors fail, Lambda sensors fail,...and (though fortunately didn't happen to me) the engines themselves are made of paper mache and like to blow up...It's by far the most unreliable fault ridden car i've owned. Scoobs definitely do not deserve their reputation for reliability. Just look at the general technical section of scoobynet to see what i mean.
Main dealer support network is terrible
Oh.. and i had it 2 weeks and someone tried to steal it from outside my house. They attract too much attention.
k..... now on to my old S13
Good points
Straight line acceleration was incredible for a 10 year old 1809cc engine. Interior was reasonable and practical considering the age of the car... unless you use the fag lighter a lot  Very little wind noise when driving with the windows down. Running costs are reasonable considering what you get to drive for your money. Looks wise.... gorgeous (i'm talking pre-facelift :D ). Handling was tight and confidence inspiring despite being RWD and tail happy. Grip was as good as the impreza... only outclassed when accelerating round wet bends. Steering feel was excellent but maybe a little light.. feels much better with a smaller wheel. Tail slides in the wet are easy to control and put a huge smile on the face of the driver everytime. Mods are cheap and power can be upped by 50% for very little cash. Car is easy to work on and a very simple design, straight 4, longditudonal engine, RWD. Debadge it and nobody knows what it is.... I got loads of attention from people wondering what the sleek shiny sports car was.
Bad points
Rust, not too bad for it's age but the rear spoiler is a p155 poor piece of design by nissan. Big ends going... MAJOR fault. Rear subframe bushes going are a pain too but again , considering it's age it's not that big a deal. Water pouring in the boot when it's opened in the rain. Dealer support is terrible.... unfortunately, not too many specialists around for techy stuff.
erm.... that's all i can remember at the moment (sorry about the length, kinda bored at work right now). I guess you can see why i want another S13 over the impreza :D

currently also own a tvr chimaera... comparing this with a largely standard s13... (random thoughts)
-grip's about the same
-can't beat the sound of a V8, esp one with a straight thru exhaust system :D
-out and out pace on a dry day... TVR beats the 200 any time; in the wet I suspect the 200 would be better as with less low end torque the wheels wouldn't spin so freely.
-in the dry, can't beat all that low end torque either for racing. don't like the fact you have to wait for the 200's turbo to kick in, plus you dont want it to kick in during rush hour round a wet roundabout ;)
-in summer, when the sun is shining and the girls are all wearing not much, I think you know which car i'd rather be in
-in the rain, it's more cosey in the 200
-position... the 200 has a much more commanding view of the road, which is useful in traffic, but for a track the TVR's lower slung position is more useful.
-i think it's easier to catch a slide with the 200 (and hold the drift :D )
In many ways they compliment each other as fun sports cars... in summer I tend to use the TVR more, and in winter the 200 more, and in their right scenarios, i'll slide out of each car with probably the same grin factor :)
I've also got a Venturi 210 and a Merc E500.
The Venturi
Plus points.
is about as fast as the 200. It's manual and more easily controlled at speed down twisting lanes as a result.
Minus Points
The downside is that at speed it has evil handling (the missus once span it and went through a hedge backwards in it) and is about as reliable as a badly maintained 25 year old Lada. Since I bought it last year (and in the 3000km it's done) it's had to have new front suspension bushes, clutch, gearbox recon, heater matrix and petrol cap (cos Mrs JB left it on the roof at a petrol station  ). Without a doubt I would never buy one again and hope to sell it to some poor unsupecting French person in the spring.
The Merc
Plus Points
Is probably the best car I've ever owned. In a straight line it will leave the 200 for dead, as well as many newer, supposedly more powerful cars because with it's autobox you can just floor it away from the lights and wooosh. With the speed limitor removed I've seen an indicated 270kph on a French motorway and it was still pulling (albeit not much). It's quiete, carries 4 people plus all the luggage you could want and in the 7000 hard driven kilometers I've had it hasn't put a foot wrong. It also feels built like a tank and I cannot think of a safer place I would have my little daughter in than the E.
The only drawbacks are that being a lardy saloon it's not exactly weildy on country roads and in the wet, even with the TC on it will try to kill you if you attempt to drive it at anything more than 9/10ths. Fill ups cost in excess of £70 a time and happen all too frequently. Oh, and I can never seem to prise the keys off the missus.
However the service I had done last week at a MB dealer only cost me £250 which is on a par with the SX.
If I had to pick only one car to have, my heart would say the 200, but the sensible family man I find myself having to be now would mean I have to pick the E. All in all not the worst position to find myself in :)

had a mkIII 86.5 supra 3.0i auto for 6 months or so while my s13 was in SE's.
Actually really really miss it :( Was a great car, besides the fact that you had to own an oil refinery to run it:eek: The interior was far far better that most, and when you consider it was a 1986 motor it was well ahead of its time.
Wasnt as fast as the 200 tho, and it was bloody difficult to get back if the back end did go:eek:
Wouldnt swap back tho :) (unless it was for a swish mk4 :D)

Some pr!ck in a N*va once managed to fit most of his car in the boot of my first 200. Must be more spacious that we imagine.
PS I hope he's gets hit by a bus. With spikes on the front.

Yeah some kid in a N*va once tried to do that to me. Was stopped at some traffic calming on a steep hill, the next thing I hear is squealing tyres and I looked on my mirror to see a white N*va full of spotty kids careering down the hill towards me with white smoke pouring from it's front tyres. Even the driver looked terrified
Luckily he stopped about 6" from my rear bumper. I would not have been a happy chappy  :D
I let them in front of me and then followed them into town with a scowl on my face. The kid kept on looking in the mirror. I bet he thought I was going to get out and pulverise him :D
200 is the fastest car ive owned, and the sportiest, by far the best looking, but then im sad enouigh to admit ive always loved the 200sx, and it was in a sence my dream car.
Handling on my 2.0 Primera was muuuch better, especially at +100mph speeds.
Miss all the guages on my old 2.0 gsx bluebird (one with a full bodykit:eek: ), some dozy bitch drove straight into the back of it outside my house, she "didnt see it", it WAS BLOODY WHITE!!!
Worst car ive ever owned was a volvo 480, was a pop-up fix till i could afford a 2*****.
Cant find one good thing to say bout it, brakes, steering, engine, suspensio, electrics............ P!SH, every part of it.

I had a slightly moded mitsu gto, 3ltr v6, chiped, increased boost, twin turbo, de cat, racing zorst n a few other things. dont know the bhp, but i bet it wasnt too bad :D it had better traction, acceleration and top speed (could do 85 in second gear!!) but 2k insurance, 10mpg, break pads every 5k miles etc, too bloody expensive :( The 200 is more fun to drive, more involving, cheaper to run and if anything does go wrong at least i can afford to fix it:) in the real world the 200 is the better car :D
