The first thing in this case is to check physical connections.
Are you connecting the machines through a hub or switch, or directly to one-another using cable?
If you are connecting directly, you will need to use crossover cable, otherwise they simply won't communicate. If you use a hub or switch, then it will be normal non-crossed type usually. If the cable is different for your application that would be the first place to check.

yep he's right, to check to see if your cable is a crossover cable put the two plugs side by side, if the wires correspond then it's a std cable, if not then it's a X-over.
If your using a hub make sure its plugged in....
Or the power supply has fried itself like mine did this bloody weekend!
Anyone got a cisco of 3com 100mbit hub/switch they might want to offload for a small pile of cash?

Hummm.... its not a crossover cable that why. Nobody told me that I needed one. My mate is lending me his spare hub later so should get it sorted then.
Cheers for the help guys.

win98 is notoriously flaky for networking since it was never designed for it. If you can use win2000.

>win98 is notoriously flaky for networking<
Yup, I was having major problems with Win98 linked to a WinME system and using Internet Connection Sharing. Got big performance improvements by installing Netbeui on both and using that for File and Printer Sharing rather than TCP/IP.

98 and ME are complete bollocks, and I am well narked that I have to support them in a network environment
So there!
