View Full Version : Which car for a economical runabout?
I looks as though I am going to get a 2nd car to get me to and from work so my SX will get left in the garage for dry days!!!!:D
I am trying to decide which car will be the cheapest to run alongside my SX? At the moment I am errrring on the side of a 998cc Fiat Cinquecento. The tax is cheep as will be the insurance and I should be able to afford a '96ish one. I should be able to get about 3 times more miles per gallon out of it compared to my s14!!;)
Why not use the 200 as your runabout and buy a maclaren f1.
200 would seem very economical and you can put a sticker on the back saying 'my other car is a mclaren f1'
I've got a Citron ZX Volcane, and a Rover 600 (both diesel)... 45-50 to the gallon for both, run all day at motorway speeds, cheap to buy, about £200 each to insure... fast (ish) both 115mph, and both about 10.5 0-60.
Can't beat em:D
Apart from the fact they are Diesel
It looks like a collect cars doesn't it ;)

Dont bother they are awful.
You can pick any of these up for under 2k...
Citroen Xantia 1.9TD or Peugeot 406 1.9TD both use the same engine which is more than capable of high miles and can return high mpg - easily 45-50mpg. You'll also get the comfort and eleccy toys of a big car. :)

I'm getting myself a '99 2.0DTi Vectra for £2k
Don't really like the interior compared to the 200 but it has air con and also front fog lights so i can piss off all those saxo drivers so they know what its like being blinded
Oh, and my brother works for a Car leasing company before you lot got Bull ****
What sort of size do you want?
Don't go for Fiat or Ford is you're going for a supermini. Best smallish car is the Skoda Fabia by a long long way. Alternatively if you want somethign very silly, a Daihatsu Terios.
But the Fabia is a superb car in all respects.

I'm looking to do the same.
I'm ditching my WRX and get a 200sx to play with and some thing sensible with 4 doors to use as an everyday car. I'd rather stay away from diesels and need 4 doors (baby seat and all that stuff  ). Also gotta be relatively cheap to insure cuz my g/f will be driving it when she eventually (if ever  ) passes her test.
Any recommendations?? Only gonna spend about £1k. Was thinking about a primera or a sunny... just so the badges on the driveway match :D Must admit... the Fabia did cross my mind but the g/f would kill me if i bought her a skoda. :D
I bought a Dreg VW golf for £300 as a run-er-round / girlfriend Xmass pressie  :p
What ever you do do not buy one of those tiny Fiat 126 things however cheap to buy and insure they seem  ;)
