(posting here for maximu coverage)
The car has recently starting making a blowing noise which sounds like the exhaust is knackered. After getting under it though I can't see/feel any holes in the rear portion of the exhaust (CAT Back) and the noise is coming from the front.
Could this just be the turbo-CAT downpipe or is it possible that there's a problem with the turbo. Has anyone else had problems with the front zorst section? Where did you get a replacement from (Nissan want £122 for it!!)?.

Thanx for any replies, gunna take to a garage tomorrow to see whats what.

cheers
dave

Its far from uncommon to have the 5/6 bolts from the exhaust elbow to wind themselves out, this will give a loud whizzy hissy noise. One of them is a total bastid and yer prolly have to grind a 13mm spanner down to get onto it. Be careful, they snap.

Could also be the turbo gaskets, mine have gone whilst Ive had my car, and I think I remember a few others on the board have them go as well. However, this noise is more of a rattleing sound rather than blowing noise.

Come to think of it, I have previously noticed a buzzy sort of sound at certain RPM, this has now stopped and has been replaced by the blowing noise.
Could that have been the pipe working loose and then its finally come away enough to break the seal??.

Anyway, I'm getting it looked at tomorrow I'll let u know how it goes.

sounds like either the manifold gaskets blowing or the manifold bolts loosing up. My car has a slight blow at the manifold which goes when hot. When cold its a slight puffety whistle.

Went to garage this morning, looks like the sound is coming from the CAT (oh phuck), gunna get the heat shields off tomorrow. I'm hoping its one of the joints into the CAT thats gone not the CAT itself.

Has anyone got away with an MOT without a CAT??
I'm thinking full Mongoose system as a new CAT is like £300 (ouch).

Just take the cat off, legally you don't need to have a cat on any year of s13.
Tell the garage it doesn't need a cat and if they argue get them to check the official listing, they'll only find the s14. The rule is - if your car isn't on the list then it doesn't need a cat, simple as that!

Well its not the CAT, theres a crack in the joint from the exhaust downpipe to the flange that bolts to the CAT. Gunna get it welded for now and start saving for that Mongoose.

Thanx for your replies.
